At a Glance

Sail along the Mediterranean, Ionian and Adriatic Seas on a truly once-in-a-lifetime voyage aboard the newly built Golden Horizon, the world’s largest square-rigged sailing ship! On this voyage, you’ll explore Italy and Croatia, making your way from Rome to Sorrento, Taormina and Galipoli to Korcula and Split. A replica of a 1913-built ship, the SV Golden Horizon has the charm and incredible beauty of a historic ship, but with luxurious and modern amenities, and cabins that each have ocean views. Enjoy a true sailing experience as the captain plots the course using the local winds and currents. Along the way, immerse yourself in local culture and cuisine, learn about history with our onboard experts and explore the sea the way it was meant to be traversed — by harnessing the power of the wind!
Activity Level
Keep the Pace
Walking 3-5 miles per day over uneven surfaces and some inclines; stairs without railings, standing for two hours at a time. While the Golden Horizon is a new vessel with modern amenities, it is modeled after a historic sailing ship, and does not include an elevator on board. Participants should be prepared to have their “sea legs” as ocean currents and wind may make the ship rock from time to time. Optional health classes and water activities are available.

Best of all, you’ll…

  • Spend two nights in Rome, taking in the city’s rich history with your experts and enjoying time to explore independently.
  • Get a taste for the culture and history of some of Italy’s finest cities as you stop to explore Sorento, Taormina and Galipoli.
  • Sail along the Dalmatian Coast to spend full days in the Croatian cities of Korcula and Split.
  • Thrill in breathtaking views from your cabin on the Golden Horizon — each guest room is ocean facing!

A Short History Of Byzantium
by John Julius Norwich
No time to wade, albeit enjoyably, through his three volume Byzantium series? This recent edition is based on his Byzantium trilogy and is equally as intelligent and inspired. Norwich is, as always, ever entertaining and engaging about this subject. An efficient read without loss of style or spirit. If you can’t manage three volumes right now, this one is for you.
Anzio: Italy and the Battle for Rome — 1944
by Lloyd Clark
The Allied campaign on the beaches of Western Italy, at Anzio, reigns as the bloodiest battle in the Second World War’s western theater. About six months before D-Day, in January 1944, a united force of 36,000 soldiers launched one of the first attacks on continental Europe at Anzio, a small coastal city thirty miles south of Rome.
A Traveller's History of Croatia
by Benjamin Curtis
Curtis untangles with alacrity the complex history of this nation at the crossroads of Europe.
A House in Sicily
by Daphne Phelps
Near Mount Etna in Sicily lies Casa Cuseni, a beautiful house built in golden stone - and the home which Daphne Phelps was astonished to find she had inherited in 1947. At the age of 34, war-weary from working as a psychiatric social worker, with barely any Italian and precious little money, she plunged into a fascinating Sicilian world. The many of problems to be overcome included not only financial difficulties but local authorities and a house staff who initially felt no loyalty to the new Signorina, but who gradually accepted her as a respected member of their small community.
La Dolce Vita University: An Unconventional Guide to Italian Culture from A to Z
by Carla Gambescia
La Dolce Vita University (LDVU) is the perfect sampler for anyone curious about (or already in amore with) Italy and its remarkably rich cultural gifts, both past and present.
