At a Glance

This is the way the Mediterranean was meant to be explored. Come aboard the world’s largest square-rigged sailing vessel and cross the Mediterranean from Greece to Sicily, Malta, Sardinia and Spain, with an archaeology expert who will reveal the fascinating ancient history of the places you’ll visit. A replica of a 1913-built ship, the SV Golden Horizon has the charm and elegance of a historic ship, but with luxurious and modern amenities. There is no experience like it, as the captain plots the course using the local winds and currents, creating a true sailing experience. This is an opportunity to journey on the storied waters of the Mediterranean the same way human beings have for millennia — by harnessing the power of the wind.
Activity Level
Keep the Pace
Walking 3-5 miles per day over uneven surfaces and some inclines; stairs without railings, standing for two hours at a time. While the SV Golden Horizon is a new vessel with modern amenities, it is modeled after a historic sailing ship, and does not include an elevator on board. Participants should be prepared to have their “sea legs” as ocean currents and wind may make the ship rock from time to time. Optional health classes and water activities are available.

Best of all, you’ll…

  • Spend two nights in Athens and join our experts for an exploration of the Acropolis and the National Archaeological Museum.
  • Enjoy a full day in Syracuse, Sicily to explore its Archaeological Park and enjoy a field trip to nearby Noto, renowned for its Sicilian Baroque architecture.
  • Learn about Phoenician history during a field trip to the ancient town of Tharros in Sardinia and discover Valletta, Malta — founded by the Knights of St. John and one of the most concentrated historic areas in the world.
  • All 140 cabins on the Golden Horizon are outside facing, so you’ll enjoy breathtaking views every moment!

The Greek Myths, Complete Edition
by Robert Graves
A new edition of Graves' classic collection with a cover by comic book artist Ross MacDonald. This expert retelling by Graves, a poet, memoirist and the author of I, Claudius (ITL429), still remains the seminal modern translation of the mythologies of Ancient Greece.
Greece, A Traveler's Literary Companion
by Artemis Leontis (Editor)
In this terrific anthology, 24 modern Greek writers offer a flavor of their nation, its culture and people, beautiful landscapes and rich history.
It's All Greek to Me
by Charlotte Higgins
With timelines, a who's who, charts and maps, this handy little primer is a thoroughly entertaining introduction to everything Greek, from poetry and drama to philosophy, history and culture.
A House in Sicily
by Daphne Phelps
Near Mount Etna in Sicily lies Casa Cuseni, a beautiful house built in golden stone - and the home which Daphne Phelps was astonished to find she had inherited in 1947. At the age of 34, war-weary from working as a psychiatric social worker, with barely any Italian and precious little money, she plunged into a fascinating Sicilian world. The many of problems to be overcome included not only financial difficulties but local authorities and a house staff who initially felt no loyalty to the new Signorina, but who gradually accepted her as a respected member of their small community.
A Traveller's History of Athens
by Richard Stoneman
A brief history of Athens through the 1990's -- wide-ranging, accessible and effectively condensed. With a useful chronology and historical gazetteer, this book marches confidently through the centuries.
Ghosts of Spain
by Giles Tremlett
Tremlett captures the Spanish character, history and modern politics in this masterful portrait, interweaving the story of his love for the country (where he has lived for 20 years) with interviews, anecdotes and observation.
