At a Glance

In 1667 the Republic of Ragusa suffered a catastrophic event – a massive earthquake that took the lives of half its population and marked the end of its Golden Age. On this virtual field trip we will visit architectural monuments past and present, from the Rector’s Palace and the Walls of Dubrovnik, to post-earthquake cathedrals and churches. This architectural voyage takes us from tragedy to transformation as Dubrovnik becomes the modern city it is today.

General Notes

Your online lecture will take place live over the course of 1-2 hours. All times are listed in the EASTERN time zone. If you live in a different time zone, please adjust your schedule accordingly. This live online experience uses Zoom Webinar, an easy-to-use web video service that includes closed captioning. All you need is an Internet connection and your computer. You will receive a confirmation email when you enroll and a reminder email one week, one day, as well as the morning of the event with a link and instructions on how to tune in. You will not be pictured on screen during the lecture, but you will have the opportunity to ask questions to the instructor live using the Q&A box. Unless otherwise noted in the lecture description, all those who enroll in this program can attend the live event and will also receive a recording of the lecture that you can watch any time within two weeks following the live event.

Was unable to attend and unable to watch within 14 days. Am unclear why RoadScholar limits watching to 14 days which is a pretty small window. Have now booked a RS trip in the same area, so permitting me to watch would be a good move for RS.

A very worthwhile venture into the history and architecture of this region—packed with information about city planning and government in the Middle Ages. Far more compelling than I expected.

Fascinating presentation that covered so many perspectives on this unique republic. Easy to follow, well illustrated.

This was a very interesting presentation about an area which I would love to visit but will probably not have the opportunity because of the pandemic and the fact that I am 73 and although I'm in good shape, I'm not getting any younger. The speaker was excellent.

Since I'm unable to travel now, the online program is perfect to learn more about the world. Maybe I'll be able to visit one day. Loved the history of a place I didn't know anything about.

This was a very informative and well paced overview of Dubrovnik from its beginnings to the present day. Luci, the presenter was personable and well informed. She had slides, mock-ups and a wealth of information to share with us. The Q&A that followed was also very enjoyable. Well done, Road Scholar!!
