Digital photography and its technology can seem intimidating. Take the mystery out of using your digital camera and phone cameras during this live, online learning adventure with professional photographer Mason Marsh! Over the course of three days, learn how to take control of your camera, get instruction on how to take a more creative photo and discover what you can do with your images on a computer. You’ll even get lessons on the editing process and the tools needed to put the finishing touches on your pictures. Get to know your fellow Road Scholars as you engage in positive feedback sessions and opportunities to learn from one another’s photography. This course is geared toward novice photographers, but there will be opportunities for everyone to learn something here!

General Notes

You’ll enjoy 2-3 hours of daily instruction, discussion and/or group critiques, which includes sufficient breaks throughout the program. Please review the daily itinerary for start and end times to ensure you won’t miss a minute of this live experience. This online program is through Zoom, an easy-to-use web video service that includes closed captioning. All you need is an Internet connection and your computer. We’ll provide a how-to guide to make sure you’ll have a hassle-free experience. This session is offered live only and will not be available on demand. Afternoon: 12:00 p.m. Mason Marsh, our lead instructor who will also serve as Group Leader, will greet everyone and review the program theme, the up-to-date daily schedule and any changes, Zoom meeting protocols, roles and responsibilities, and answer any questions. We will then say hello to our fellow Road Scholars. 12:30 p.m. Lesson. With a focus on why photography is good for us, we’ll explore the science at play when we make photographs and how the practice of immersing oneself in creative effort leads to a better life. 1:00 p.m. Break. 1:15 p.m. Lesson. Photography is about creative control. In this lesson, we’ll gain the fundamental skills to use our cameras to their fullest potential. 2:15 p.m. Interactive Q&A. 2:45 p.m. Wrap-up and notes for tomorrow with homework assignments. 3:00 p.m. Today’s session will end.

This lesson is designed to engage our creativity by exploring the art and science of composition. 1:00 p.m. Break. 1:15 p.m. Lesson. Once we’ve have captured our creative vision, it’s time to protect the digital files and design a system to keep them organized. 2:00 p.m. Interactive Q&A. 2:15 p.m. Critique session. Our instructor will provide constructive and encouraging critiques of participants’ submitted photos. 2:45 p.m. Wrap-up and notes for tomorrow with homework assignments. 3:00 p.m. Today’s session will end.

Digital Imaging Basics, Processing Raw Images, Critiques

Afternoon: 12:00 p.m. Review of the day. 12:05 p.m. Lesson. We will focus on digital imaging basics and processing our photos. Capturing digital images is just the beginning. We’ll examine digital image processing techniques that will unlock creative potential. 1:00 p.m. Break. 1:15 p.m. Lesson. Using case studies, we will delve into “photo recipes” and processing raw digital images. 2:15 p.m. Critique session. Our instructor will provide constructive and encouraging critiques of participants’ submitted photos. 2:45 p.m. Wrap-up and farewells. 3:00 p.m. This concludes our program.
