At a Glance

The Acropolis of Athens, the fortified rock rising amidst the bustling city, is the most recognizable landmark of Greece. The Parthenon, the ancient temple at its center, is the country’s most iconic ruin. They have collectively come to symbolize the Greek nation, democracy, even ‘civilization’ itself, but this does not tell the whole story. From the Bronze Age to the 21st Century the Acropolis has lived many lives - as a palace, as a place of worship for pagans, Christians, and Muslims, and as a symbol of resistance to Nazi occupation. As well as taking a ‘virtual tour’ to the iconic temples, this lecture will explore these varied untold stories of the Acropolis, from its origins to the present day.
