Embark on a learning adventure filled with art, architecture, culture and history as you explore Catalonia from the comfort of your home! With experts live from Catalonia, get a first-hand look into this region of northern Spain that remains unique with its own language and local customs. During virtual field trips, learn about the architectural masterpieces of Barcelona, marvel at Gaudi’s Basilica of La Sagrada Familia, and delight in the beauty of the Catalan coast along the Costa Brava. Get insight into local history during expert-led presentations on Catalan Medieval history, the Spanish Civil War and the Catalan independence movement. Along the way, delight in a mojito-making workshop, learn how to clap along to the music during a Rumba Catalana demonstration and get to know your fellow Road Scholars as you discuss the works of Dali and more.

  • Enjoy virtual field trips to explore some of Catalonia’s gems, including Barcelona, the Basilica of La Sagrada Familia, Costa Brava and inland medieval villages, and Cap de Creus Natural Park.
  • Get insight into the Spanish Civil War during a lecture by a professor from Barcelona’s Pompeu Fabra University.
  • Meet a local Catalan family for an opportunity to discuss contemporary issues, including the Catalan Independence movement.

You’ll enjoy 2-3 hours of daily instruction, discussion and/or field trips, which includes sufficient breaks throughout the program. This online program is through Zoom, an easy-to-use web video service that includes closed captioning. All you need is an Internet connection and your computer. We’ll provide a how-to guide to make sure you’ll have a hassle-free experience. This session is offered live only and will not be available on demand. Please review the daily itinerary for start and end times to ensure you won’t miss a minute of this live experience. All times are listed in the EASTERN time zone. If you live in a different time zone, please adjust your schedule accordingly.

Sandra Garcia Nolan’s ambition was to lead travelers around the world. She earned an International Tourism degree from the University of Lincolnshire in the UK, a Tourism Management Masters from the University of Southern Cross in Lismore, Australia, and has been an official expert Catalonia guide since 2003. Sandra has led educational groups throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, and has now settled back home on Catalonia’s Costa Brava, where, in addition to leading educational programs and lecturing for Road Scholar, she operates her own walking company.

Olga Inglès is full of energy and love for art, culture, and nature. She has a Bachelor degree in Psychology from Barcelona University and a degree in Cultural Anthropology. She has been a world traveler all her life and has been leading educational groups around Europe, Africa, India, and the Middle East since 2007. Her curiosity and passion to discover and understand new cultures took her to live in England, India, and East Africa. Olga is based in her native Mataró, just outside Barcelona.

Miquel Berga View biography
Miquel Berga has published extensively on British writers involved in the Spanish Civil War, including John Langdon-Davies and Nancy Johnstone. He is an Orwell scholar who has lectured in several universities in the UK and the USA. He curated a major exhibition on the famous Civil War Catalan photojournalist Agustí Centelles (2006). Miquel Berga is a former Dean of Humanities at Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona where he is now academic director of their Master in Comparative Studies.

Maria Carretero has been dancing since she was could walk. She graduated in Performing Arts from the University of Malaga and has been dancing since with her own company throughout Europe and China and in the best “tablao” in the capital, El Corral de la Morería. Her passion is traveling, and being able to combine dance and travel has fulfilled a lifelong dream. The Master classes she performs are Maria´s way of sharing her passions, and she loves helping participants to feel the beat!

Luisa Forner graduated from Escuelas Pax in Valencia. She has lead international groups around her native Spain for 12 years. Her ability to foster group cohesion and mastery of cross-cultural communication results from years of teaching in international schools and working as a licensed local guide in her home city of Valencia. Luisa is well-versed in Spanish arts and history. She speaks Spanish, Valencian, and French. Her talents and diverse background have been a valuable addition to the many Road Scholar programs.
