Morning: 11:00 a.m. Welcome. Our Group Leader will greet everyone and provide an overview of the program and how our online sessions will work throughout the program. 11:45 a.m. Lecture. Alas, there was no photography 1804-1806, and no artist on the expedition. But the story has so fascinated artists over the years that it comes alive through their creativity. We will “journey” with artists from the period through current day to follow the expedition of Lewis and Clark, commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson.

Afternoon: 12:30 p.m. Break. 12:45 p.m. Virtual field trip. Let’s travel coast-to-coast as we follow in the footsteps of Meriwether Lewis. Starting at Monticello, then on to Washington DC, Philadelphia and other sites critical to the preparation for the journey. Moving on to Kentucky, where William Clark joined Lewis and his men with men Clark had recruited. Then on to the Pacific Ocean, viewing how communities commemorate the expedition today, how progress has impacted the trail, and what “scenes of visionary enchantment” can still be enjoyed as they were then. 1:30 p.m. Group discussion. We will focus on journals and letters from members of the Corps of Discovery. We will discuss what they tell us about history and prepare you for a bit of “unstructured coursework” for the evening. 1:55 p.m. Wrap-up and notes for tomorrow. 2:00 p.m. Today’s session will end.

Morning: 11:00 a.m. Review of the day. 11:15 a.m. Lecture. The human story of the expedition includes encounters of mutual benefit and chaos. Among the “leaders and lads” were the captains and chiefs, expedition members and Native American hunters-warriors they encountered. The expedition’s intent was peaceful exploration. How did it play out?

Afternoon: 12:00 p.m. Group Discussion with Q&A. 12:30 p.m. Break. 12:45 p.m. Lecture. Artist and author Michael Haynes will join us to present on the forts and military protocols of the expedition. The Corps wintered in forts, and there were hundreds of nights camped along the rivers.Michael Haynes’ research and artistry helps us better understand the military protocols of the period and the adjustments necessary as the expedition faced unanticipated challenges. Morning: 11:00 a.m. Review of the day. 11:15 a.m. Lecture. From the launch of the expedition in May 1804 to their triumphant return in September 1806, each day brought serious risk of debilitating conditions or loss of life. We will learn about a few of these disasters, diseases, and disputes.

We will travel the rivers and streams that were the transportation lifelines of members of this expedition. The journals of the expedition contributed mightily to the advancement of learning in this Age of Enlightenment.

The destinations today are the nooks and crannies and the wide-open spaces that revealed animals, plants and landscapes never before experienced by members of the Corps. Morning: 11:00 a.m. Review of the day. 11:15 a.m. Lecture. The Corps of Discovery consisted of soldiers and civilians including a slave, a native woman, and a baby. As a team, they pioneered inclusion and mutual respect long before such notions were widely accepted in this country. Given the race and gender issues of the current day, these pioneering ideas remain exceptionally important.

Today we will hear from Grammy-nominated writer and music historian, Cary Ginell, about the role that music played on the trail. We will hear some of these historic songs which were performed by Pierre Cruzatte, a riverman brought to the expedition for his navigational skills but who was also an accomplished fiddle player. 1:15 p.m. Group discussion with Q&A. Let's enjoy some farewell cocktails and discuss cooking with the Corps.
