12:00 Noon. Break (15 minutes). 12.15 p.m. Talk. We’ll learn about the fascinating English institution known as the Public School. These are actually the reverse of what Americans might assume. They are independent of the state-sponsored system of schools open to the general public and serve those who can afford residential boarding fees. When they developed during the late medieval and Renaissance eras, they were intended for boys from relatively underprivileged circumstances; however, centuries later, they became the domain of the upper classes. Some of the most famous are Charterhouse, Eton, Harrow, Rugby, Shrewsbury, Westminster, and Winchester. 12.30 p.m. Interactive Q&A (30 minutes) on this morning’s conversation. 1:00 p.m. Today’s session will end.
