We’ll join a local expert on a walking field trip through Little Havana. While many cultures have characteristic games, in Little Havana, it's dominoes. Beginning at Máximo Gómez Park, popularly known as Domino Park, we’ll see a popular place where locals gather to play the national game of Cuba. Máximo Gómez, for whom the park is named, was a military commander indispensable to the mission of Cuba’s struggle for independence. As we learn about the history, culture, and people of Little Havana during our expert-led walk, we will stop along the way for Cuban coffee and other delights. This activity ends at approximately 11:30AM.
On your own to sample more of the local fare. We recommend staying for lunch in Little Havana. Check out El Exquisito for a medianoche - a sandwich with sweet egg bread, pork, swiss cheese, and ham. Make sure to save room for a scoop afterwards at Azucars.
Free time. You may want to further acquaint yourself with Little Havana and explore the nearby Bay of Pigs Museum and Library, or check out the local beach scene along South Beach, home to neon-soaked Ocean Drive. With the included Explorer Pass, you may wish to go on a walk with the Miami Design Preservation League, or independently explore the more low-key Española Way, a picturesque pedestrian boulevard lined with shops and restaurants. Meet up with your fellow Road Scholars at the Courtyard's Bistro for happy hour from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Over a glass of beer or wine, share the day's adventures.
On your own to enjoy more of the regional cuisine. Your group leader will offer suggestions based on your preferences and within Miami's many neighborhoods.
