Getting on/off a motorcoach; driving approximately 90 miles; about 3 hours total, with stops for field trips; longest leg is approximately 1.5 hours. Walking up to 2 miles throughout the day; extended periods of standing at field trip sites.
Once checked out of the hotel, we’ll begin our motorcoach transfer to La Havre, stopping en route to explore the British and Canadian airborne operations at Ranville Cemetery and Merville Battery. CWGC Ranville Cemetery contains 2,235 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War, 97 of them unidentified. There are also 330 German graves and a few burials of other nationalities. We'll continue to the Merville artillery battery, one of the key Allied targets during the landings. As we explore the remains of the battery, our Study Leader will tell the tale of its difficult capture that began with a night-time parachute jump. We’ll then complete our motorcoach transfer to Le Havre where we will embark aboard the Queen Mary 2.
Aboard the ship, we’ll have a late lunch in the King's Court and choose from a buffet with multiple selections for appetizers and soups, salad and sandwiches, entrées, and desserts as well as coffee, tea, water; other beverages available for purchase.
After taking some time to settle in and familiarize ourselves with the ship, we’ll will regroup for a mandatory Safety Drill, so please listen out for the Captain’s announcements once on board.
In the Britannia Restaurant, we’ll choose plated meals from the extensive menu featuring multiple selections for appetizers and soups, salads, entrées, and dessert, as well as coffee, tea, water; other beverages available for purchase. It’s impossible not to feel special making a dramatic entrance down the grand staircase.
At leisure. The Queen Mary 2 is a floating city. The options for activities and entertainment are many and varied. You might like to see a show in the ballroom, go dancing, listen to music, watch a movie in the theater, or have a beverage and a chat with new Road Scholar friends in one of the bars. Perhaps wander through the library — one of the best shipboard libraries anywhere — to find a book and curl up in that perfect reading chair.
