Climbing in/out of vans; driving approx. 45 miles roundtrip; about 1.5 hours. Hike Dragonfly Loop approx. 3.5 miles roundtrip; elevation +/- 337'. Hike Angel Loop trail approx 4.5 mi ; elevation +/- 1000' . Hiking on maintained dirt trails.

Board the vans for Dragonfly Trail for an easy 3.5 mile hike. There will be an opportunity to view some spectacular petroglyphs of humans, animals and a dragonfly. The next stop will be Fort Bayard, once home to the 9th Calvary Buffalo Soldiers and then 2nd Lt. John J. Pershing. There will be field trip with commentary provided by our Group Leader. The Fort played a role in the search for Geronimo. This Fort was created by Company B of the 125th US Colored Infantry (aka) the Buffalo Soldiers. Among this group were a number of medal of honor recipients, one of which was William Cathay who was also known as Cathy Williams, the only lady Buffalo Soldier. Today a national cemetery is located at Fort Bayard and the Fort Bayard Veteran's Home sets on this historical area.
At Fort Bayard Bataan Park, we’ll enjoy nutritious sack lunches prepared by a local restaurant as we enjoy the unique beauty of the area.
Angel Loop Trail will be the hike destination this afternoon. Enjoy an afternoon stretch on this 4.5 mile easy hike. Elevation +/- of 1053'. For those wishing to return to the Lodge instead and enjoy the tranquility of our host, transportation will be available.
At a local restaurant, we’ll enjoy a plated meal featuring local cuisine, with soft drinks, coffee, tea, water; other beverages available for purchase.
We’ll then return to the lodge with the remainder of the evening at leisure.
