Built under the direction of the great statesman Pericles during Athens' Golden Age between 447 and 432 BCE, the Acropolis represents the most magnificent achievements of Athenian culture during this remarkable era. It has been called “the supreme effort of genius in pursuit of beauty” and “the most perfect Doric temple ever built.”

From the UNESCO inscription: “The layout of Delphi is a unique artistic achievement. Mt. Parnassus is a veritable masterpiece and is where a series of monuments were built whose modular elements — terraces, temples, treasuries, etc. — combine to form a strong expression of the physical and moral values of a site which may be described as magical.” There are breathtaking views of the mountains and valley below.

Breakfast: In the hotel restaurant.

Morning: Led by your Egyptologist, explore the most renowned sites of Egypt: the Great Pyramids of Giza and the Solar Boat Museum. The pyramids of Giza are perhaps the only true rival to the Great Sphinx when one thinks of ancient Egypt and its architecture. The Valley of Giza-- with its wonderful monuments-- is truly a marvel of architectural prowess. The three largest pyramids located in the valley consist of the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the Pyramid of Kafhre and the Pyramid of Menkaura. Each pyramid is a tomb dedicated to a different king of Egypt. We will continue on to the Solar Boat Museum. The significance of the buried boat is still debated. The Pyramid Texts clearly state that at the end of the pharaoh's life on Earth, his soul ascends to the heavens in the solar barque to join his father Re. The arguments are about whether this boat was purely symbolic - part of the burial goods - or whether it was actually used in the funeral procession to transport the body of the king by river to his pyramid complex. While some scholars claim that there is evidence that the boat has been in water, Zahi Hawass points out that shavings of cedar and acacia found in the pit during excavation, indicate that it was probably built close to where it was buried. While the boat is of the right dimensions to be suitable as a river craft, no mast was found with the components. End the morning with a wonderful opportunity to see the sites from a great panoramic view point and experience a unique short camel ride.

Lunch: At a local restaurant we will have a family style meal plus soft drinks, coffee, tea, water.

Afternoon: After lunch, we will transfer by coach to the hotel. You will have some free time before meeting in the lobby for an expert lecture on Egyptian Social Life by a local expert.

Dahshur is a necropolis of the Old Kingdom with some of the oldest pyramids. The Bent and Red pyramids were built by and for the 4th dynasty pharaoh, Sneferu, around 2600 BC. Afterward, led by your Egyptologist, continue to the Imhotep Museum. The museum opened in 2006 and displays finds from the site, in commemoration of the ancient Egyptian architect Imhotep. Next, explore the pyramids of Zoser & Teti. The Pyramid of Djoser (Zoser), or step pyramid is an archeological remain in the Saqqara necropolis, Egypt, northwest of the city of Memphis. The Pyramid of Teti is located in the section of the Pyramid of Teti in the Necropolis of Saqqara. This pyramid is the second to contain Pyramid Texts after the Pyramid of King Unas, the last king of the Fifth Dynasty.

Activity note: Full day field trip will take approximately 8 hours, with periods of sitting on the coach traveling between sites. Getting on/off funicular at Cape Point, with set of steep stairs to reach the Cape Point lighthouse; spectacular views can still be had without climbing to the lighthouse. At Boulders Beach, the coach must park in a parking lot that requires about a 15-20 minute walk to get to the entrance to Boulders; the walk is on flat, paved surfaces.

Breakfast: Aboard ship.

Morning: Following breakfast, we will be joined by a local expert before departing by motorcoach toward Cape Point; we will travel via the coastal route passing through Camps Bay (South Africa’s world famous beach resort), past the Twelve Apostle Range, through Hout Bay and along Chapman’s Peak Drive, one of the most spectacular coastal roads to be found in Africa. Our destination will be the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve. Cape Point, where the cold Benguela current and the warm Agulhas current meet, is one of the world’s most beautiful places – a stretch of rocky mountain jutting southward into the sea. Here we will find a myriad of pristine beaches, sheltered bays and coves, as well as a rich array of indigenous flora. The fynbos reserve (a unique vegetation type of the Cape Floral Kingdom) is home to a variety of wildlife and bird species. Whales (dependent on season), penguins and seals may be spotted from this point.

Lunch: At a local restaurant specializing in seafood, enjoy a 3-course plated meal, plus coffee, tea, water; other beverages available for purchase.

Afternoon: We will continue to Boulders Beach to view the resident African penguin colony. Our local expert will lead us to the beach, which is nestled in a sheltered cove between Simon's Town and Cape Point, and introduce us to the penguins. Boulders has become world famous for its thriving colony of African penguins and magnificent wind-sheltered beaches. Boulders is one of the few sites where this vulnerable bird (Spheniscus demersus) can be observed at close range, wandering freely in a protected environment. After descending the mountain, we will explore Cape Town in the company of a local expert. Sites visited include: the Bo Kaap, a colorful and predominantly Muslim neighborhood; the Company Gardens, a lovely garden in the heart of city center that is surrounded by the Houses of Parliament; the Anglican Cathedral of South Africa, where Desmond Tutu was bishop; Greenmarket Square, an historic, and vibrant, meeting place in the business district; the Castle of Good Hope, a former fort that is the oldest building in South Africa; and District Six, which serves as a poignant reminder of the impact of apartheid. The District 6 museum contains exhibits that invite a very visual and interactive understanding of what life was like in the area, and of apartheid’s impacts on the residents in the neighborhood.

The vineyards form a patchwork in the fertile valleys and seem to be overshadowed by dramatic mountains. There is an almost European atmosphere with beautiful Cape Dutch architecture seen everywhere. We will partake in a wine tasting and cellar tour at a local wine estate, as well as visit the Huguenot Monument in Franschhoek and have time to explore Stellenbosch on our own.

Kirstenbosch was established in 1913 to promote, conserve and display the extraordinarily rich and diverse flora of southern Africa, and it was the first botanic garden in the world to be devoted to a country’s indigenous flora. On display in the gardens is a wide variety of the unique Cape Floristic Region plant life, as well as plants from all the diverse regions of southern Africa; there are over 7,000 species in cultivation at Kirstenbosch, including many that are rare and threatened. In 2004, the Cape Floristic Region, including Kirstenbosch, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Morning: We'll board our motorcoach in the morning for a short drive to Knossos to explore with a local expert. Constructed around 1900 BC, it was the administrative and religious center of the Minoan kingdom. An earthquake destroyed the original complex; it was then rebuilt on an even grander scale, only to be destroyed again by the massive volcanic eruption on Santorini around 1500 BC. Though periodically excavated by Greek archaeologists in the late 19th century, credit for the full excavation and restoration is given to amateur Victorian archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans.
