1
Check-in, Program Registration, Orientation, Welcome Dinner

Activity note: Hotel check-in from 2:30 p.m.

Afternoon: Program Registration, 2:30 – 4:30 p.m. After you have your room assignment, come to the Road Scholar table in the lobby to register with the program staff and get your welcome packet containing your name-tag, up-to-date schedule that reflects any last-minute changes, other important information, and to confirm when and where the Orientation session will take place. If you arrive late, please ask for your packet when you check in. Orientation, 4:30 p.m. The Group Leader will greet everyone and lead introductions. We will review the up-to-date program schedule, discuss roles and responsibilities, logistics, safety guidelines, emergency procedures, and answer questions. Unless specified otherwise, transportation will be provided primarily by vans. The Center is located on Center Lake, and has a number of wetlands on site. Our Environmental and Outdoor Educational Program staff will guide us through a number of experiments and experiences. Swim suits, water shoes, insect repellent, sunscreen, and hats are recommended. Fishing equipment and bait are provided. Periods in the daily schedule designated as “Free time” and “At leisure” offer opportunities for grandparents to have some downtime, while grandchildren are participating in supervised activities. Program activities, schedules, personnel, and indicated distances or times may change due to local circumstances/conditions. In the event of changes, we will alert you as quickly as possible. Thank you for your understanding. This is a Road Scholar intergenerational program. Grandparents are responsible for their grandchildren. If/when separate age group activities are conducted concurrently, program staff will supervise. Children are never to be left unsupervised.

Dinner: In the dining room of the conference center, we’ll have a buffet meal with choices of entrees. All non-alcoholic beverages included.

Evening: We’ll then continue getting to know our fellow Road Scholars with beverages and light snacks offered. The remainder of the evening is at leisure. Settle in and get a good night’s rest for the day ahead.

Water Biology, Fishing, Kayaking, & Canoeing

Activity note: We will spend the day on and in the water. Walking distances less than a mile.

Breakfast: In the dining room at the conference center, we’ll have a buffet meal featuring a variety of hot and cold choices such as an egg dish, cereals, pancakes, breakfast breads and pastries, fresh fruit, milk, juice, coffee, tea, water.

Morning: We’ll go over the day's activities with our Group Leader. Afterwards, educators from the center's Environmental and Outdoor Educational Program will lead us through a number of experiential learning activities at the lake and wetlands that will introduce participants to the lake and wetland ecology. We learn how to do a number of chemical and physical tests that will give us data to measure the relative water quality. Especially for Kids: We’ll wade into wetlands, using dip nets to sample macro-invertebrates.

Lunch: In the dining room at the conference center, we’ll enjoy a buffet lunch, with all non-alcoholic beverages included.

Afternoon: We’ll learn how to canoe and kayak with our certified instructors. Especially for kids: While our grandparents enjoy some time at leisure, the grandkids will enjoy creating with a water-themed craft!

Dinner: Dining room buffet.

Evening: After supper, we will go fishing both onshore and on the pontoon boat.

3
River Livery & Float, Free Time, Tie-Dying T-Shirts

Activity note: Driving about 30 miles, approximately 40 minutes each way. Bring water shoes, towel, sunscreen, swim suit, hat, and dry clothes for after our experience. Easy paddling, floating on a quiet river.

Breakfast: Dining room buffet.

Morning: After breakfast, we will travel by vans to a local river livery. We will get safety instructions from the livery and then be transported to the put-in area. We will enjoy a 3 to 4 hour float, enjoying a snack on the river, with a lifeguard and Kett staff accompanying us. We will arrive back at the livery for lunch.

Lunch: At the livery, we will enjoy a boxed lunch of sandwiches, chips, fruit, pasta salad, choice of beverage and cookies.

Afternoon: Upon arrival back at the center, we’ll take some time to freshen up. Free time will follow, with supervised activities for grandchildren by Kett staff and snacks and beverages. Especially for Kids: After snack time, we’ll learn how to tie-dye t-shirts!

Dinner: Dining room buffet.

Evening: In the main lodge of the conference center, we’ll enjoy an evening of music by local musicians.

4
Sailing at the Schooner School Ship

Activity note: Driving about 75 miles, approximately 1 hour each way. Bring a jacket, hat, sunscreen, and water shoes.

Breakfast: Dining room buffet.

Morning: We will leave the center by 9:00 a.m. and travel by van, for the school ship in Suttons Bay, on Grand Traverse Bay, Lake Michigan, where we will learn how to use a remote operating vehicle to survey the bottom of the Bay.

Lunch: On shore, we will enjoy a boxed lunch featuring choice of beverages, wraps, fruit, salad, chips and dessert.

Afternoon: We will sail out into Grand Traverse Bay on our schoolship schooner. Especially for Kids: Onboard, the school ship staff will lead us through a series of experiments as we learn about the ecology of Lake Michigan. After disembarking the ship, we will depart from Suttons Bay and return back to the center in time for dinner. Snacks will be provided on the return trip home.

Dinner: Dining room buffet.

Evening: We’ll enjoy some evening fishing before setting out with one of the conference center’s environmental and outdoor educational staff for a night hike and owl calling on the center’s trails. The remainder of the evening will be at leisure. You may wish to play board games or simply relax.

Retired Great Lakes Ships, Free Time, Storytelling

Activity note: Driving approximately 50 miles each way, about 1 hour each way. Some stairs on the car ferry. Bring a jacket, swimsuit, water shoes, towel, sunscreen, and hat.

Breakfast: Dining room buffet.

Morning: We'll travel by vans from the center to Manistee, located on Lake Michigan and home to a retired car ferry, the SS City of Milwaukee, and an ice breaker, the USCGC Acacia. We will enjoy an expert-led exploration of each ship, and learn the importance that these vessels played in the history of Manistee and towns like it along the Great Lakes.

Lunch: On the Lake Michigan beach in Manistee we will enjoy a picnic-style lunch.

Afternoon: Free Time. We will spend the afternoon enjoying time on the beach! We can choose to walk the breakwall or stroll downtown! We’ll then return to the conference center in time for dinner.

Dinner: Dining room buffet.

Evening: Especially for Kids: We’ll gather for an evening of stories, guided by the contents of our story bags! It is a Kettunen Center tradition to end our week with this fun activity. Afterwards, we will enjoy a campfire and make s'mores. Be sure to prepare for check-out and departures in the morning.
