1
Check-in, Registration, Orientation, Welcome Dinner

Activity note: Hotel check-in from 3:00 p.m.

Afternoon: Program Registration: 4:30-5:15 p.m. After you have your room assignment, come to the Road Scholar table in the hotel conference room (behind the pool) to register with the program staff and get your welcome packet containing your name-tag, up-to-date schedule that reflects any last-minute changes, other important information, and to learn when and where the Orientation session will take place. If you arrive late, please ask for your packet when you check in. Orientation. The Group Leader will greet everyone and lead introductions. We will review the up-to-date program schedule and any changes, discuss roles and responsibilities, logistics, safety guidelines, emergency procedures, and answer questions. Periods in the schedule labeled “Free Time and “At Leisure” offer opportunities to make the program more meaningful and memorable while going out to explore on your own, engaging in available activities independently, making new friends among fellow participants, or simply relaxing. The Group Leader will always be happy to offer suggestions. Program activities, schedules, personnel, and indicated distances or times may change due to local circumstances/conditions. In the event of changes, we will alert you as quickly as possible. Thank you for your understanding.

Dinner: At the restaurant adjacent to the hotel, we’ll have a plated dinner with multiple choices of entrée plus coffee, tea, water; other beverages available for purchase.

Evening: Continue getting to know your fellow Road Scholars, settle in, and get a good night’s rest for the day ahead.

Art Workshops, Movies & Magic

Breakfast: At the restaurant adjacent to the hotel, the breakfast buffet offers choices such as eggs, bacon, sausage, French toast, oatmeal, fruit bowl, yogurt, milk, juice, coffee, tea, water.

Morning: We’ll begin with an evaluation of participants' watercolor experience, if any, and discuss expectations for the program. It is typical for participants to have a varied level of experience and our instructor will make sure to reach out to each participant on an individual basis throughout the workshop. We’ll have a discussion for all levels of various approaches to a well-designed painting. Our instructor will then focus on basic watercolor techniques for those interested in reviewing or learning these techniques for the first time. More experienced painters will take part in an exercise suited to their level of experience. We’ll also discuss how to determine the quality of brushes, paper, and paints, and learn about basic techniques such as wet into wet, flat wash, graded wash, and more.

Lunch: At the restaurant adjacent to the hotel, we’ll have choices of a plated lunch with soup, salad, multiple choices of entrée, hot and cold sandwiches, and more plus coffee, tea, water; other beverages available for purchase.

Afternoon: Our next session will focus on the color wheel, color harmony, and optical vibration used by the Masters. We’ll also continue with technique lessons following from the morning. Those learning basic techniques will complete a painting by the end of the day, utilizing various techniques learned we’ve learned.

Dinner: Restaurant plated meal.

Evening: As a delightful extracurricular activity, we’ll have a presentation on movies and magic — the history of the film industry in Sedona. Did you know that Elvis Presley made a movie in Sedona? Remember Jeff Chandler as Cochise in “Broken Arrow” with Jimmy Stewart?

Landscape Painting Workshop, Free Time

Breakfast: Restaurant buffet.

Morning: Our art workshop this morning will focus on landscape painting and how to approach it with emphasis on painting rocks, trees, shrubs, water, and sky.

Lunch: This meal has been excluded from the program cost and is on your own to enjoy what you like. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions.

Afternoon: Free Time. Take this opportunity for personal independent exploration to see and do what interests you most. Please refer to the list of Free Time Opportunities. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions. You might like to sketch or paint outdoors, visit some of Sedona’s world-class galleries, take a hike, or just relax. The classroom will be available for anyone who would like to spend more time on their projects.

Dinner: At a Thai restaurant near the hotel, we’ll have plated meals with dishes such as flavored rice, noodle and mixed veggie and meat dishes, all served family style in a friendly atmosphere. Beverages include coffee, tea, water; other beverages available for purchase.

Evening: At leisure. Take time to work on individual art projects, explore more of Sedona, or just relax.

Plein Air Workshop, Sedona Galleries, Native American Art

Breakfast: Restaurant buffet.

Morning: Building on our work so far, we’ll learn to apply additional techniques such as texturing, lifting, and charging in color for richer darks. We’ll also spend more on composition.

Lunch: Restaurant plated meal.

Afternoon: We’ll take a field trip for our first plein air session with insights into light and shadows, atmospheric and aerial perspective, and, of course, plenty of time to paint with instructor observation and guidance. We’ll then head into town and visit some of the famed galleries, discussing and sharing critiques of various works with our instructor.

Dinner: Restaurant plated meal.

Evening: We’ll be joined by the former Director of the Heard Museum for a presentation on Native American art.

Indoor Outdoor Painting Classes

Breakfast: Restaurant buffet.

Morning: Muddy watercolors, yuck! What causes “mud” on your piece? We’ll learn how to avoid it or correct it. We’ll also get more information on basic techniques for less experienced painters, and more on how to create luminous paintings including layering, glazing, mixing colors on palette versus paper, and mingling paint on paper.

Lunch: Restaurant plated meal.

Afternoon: We’ll head out on our second plein air field trip and talk about how to paint Sedona's unique red rock landscape.

Dinner: Restaurant plated meal. During our farewell dinner, share favorite experiences with new Road Scholar friends.

Evening: At leisure. Our classroom will be available for students to finish up their watercolor projects. Prepare for check-out and departure after our art show in the morning.

Morning: The culmination of our program is the Road Scholars Art Show. We’ll display our paintings, examine one another’s work, and discuss techniques.
