Activity note: Hotel check-in available from 2:00 p.m. NOTE: This program is based in the coastal town of CASCAIS, 20 miles from Lisbon ***IMPORTANT: The large group will be split into smaller groups of approximately 25 participants. To maintain a small group feel amid a large group program, the order of the daily schedule will vary per group. Smaller groups will each do different activities during the day, joining back together as a large group for some programming.

Afternoon: Upon arrival at the hotel, check in and take some time to unpack and relax before orientation. Orientation: The Group Leader will greet everyone and lead introductions. We will review the up-to-date program schedule, discuss roles and responsibilities, logistics, safety guidelines, emergency procedures, and answer questions. Participants will be divided into smaller groups for many activities and itineraries will vary. Daily schedules and exact times of all activities will be confirmed at the welcome meeting. Unless specified otherwise, transportation will be provided primarily by motorcoach and require going up/down a few steps when getting on/off. Unless otherwise specified, our Group Leader will lead all field trips providing commentary throughout. Note that dinners in Portugal and Spain are typically eaten later than in other countries, thereby leaving little time in the evenings after meals. Periods in the daily schedule designated as “Free time” and “At leisure” offer opportunities to do what you like and make your experience even more meaningful and memorable according to your personal preferences. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions. Program activities, schedules, personnel, and indicated distances or times may change due to local circumstances/conditions. In the event of changes, we will alert you as quickly as possible. Thank you for your understanding.

Dinner: At the hotel, we’ll enjoy a welcome dinner comprised of a 3-course plated meal, plus water and complimentary glass of wine; other beverages available for purchase.

Evening: At leisure. Continue getting to know your fellow Road Scholars, settle in, and get a good night’s rest for the day ahead.

Introduction to Portugal, A Farmstead, Tiles Factory

Activity note: Walking about 2 miles throughout the day; additional periods of standing on site; some stairs, some uneven ground at the farm. Driving approx. 30 miles each way; about 2 hours spent aboard the motorcoach.

Breakfast: At the hotel, the breakfast buffet will include a selection of bread and pastries, cold cuts, cheese, yogurt, fruit, cereal, a daily selection of hot breakfast choices, plus juice, tea and coffee.

Morning: We’ll begin the morning at the hotel with an introductory lecture given by a local expert historian who specializes in the history and people of Portugal. Later, we’ll board our motorcoach and drive north of Lisbon to visit the rural property of Companhia das Lezírias, a traditional Portuguese farmstead where olive and cork trees grow, wine is produced, and the renowned Lusitano horse is raised. Here, we’ll learn from a local expert about rural life relating to these specific aspects.

Lunch: At the Companhia das Lezírias farmstead, we’ll be treated to a typical Portuguese buffet lunch.

Afternoon: This afternoon we head by motorcoach to a nearby family-run artisan tile factory where we will learn from the tile maker about this small business and the elaborate process that goes into the making of Portugal's renowned hand-made tiles, or "azulejos." Upon our return to the hotel in Cascais in the late afternoon, we’ll meet with some local professionals who will talk with us about life in Portugal, the current challenges and opportunities faced by the Portuguese people, and answer any questions we may have.

Dinner: This meal has been excluded from the program cost and is on your own to enjoy what you like.

Contemporary Portugal, Cookery Workshop

Activity note: Walking about 2 miles throughout the day; mainly flat ground; periods of standing at the cookery workshop.

Breakfast: Hotel buffet.

Morning: At the hotel, we’ll gather for a lecture given by our local expert from yesterday on contemporary Portugal. Next, we’ll walk to a Portuguese cookery workshop led by a local chef and teacher at Lisbon’s Hotel School. This interactive class will teach us how to make several traditional family-style dishes, including the regional staple of “bacalhau” – cod fish.

Lunch: At the workshop, we’ll enjoy the results of our cookery class with a complimentary glass of wine, plus coffee, tea, and water.

Afternoon: This afternoon we enjoy a Group Leader led walking visit of the town of Cascais, former safe haven for European royalty, and center of intrigue and espionage during World War 2

Dinner: At a local restaurant, we’ll join our fellow Get Together friends for a group dinner

Evening: At leisure.

Mafra, Free Afternoon

Activity note: Walking about 2 miles during group activities, many steep steps and long periods of standing at Mafra. Free time activities may involve additional walking. Driving approx. 26 miles one way; about 1 hour.

Breakfast: Hotel buffet.

Morning: We’ll start out the day with a drive by motorcoach to Mafra for an expert-led field trip to a unique architectural project designed to be a convent, palace, and basilica. This building houses one of the most important libraries in Europe - boasting a large diversity of thematic collections (from 15th to 18th centuries) representing different fields of knowledge.

Lunch: This meal has been excluded from the program cost and is on your own to enjoy what you like. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions.

Afternoon: Free Time. Take this opportunity for personal independent exploration to see and do what interests you most. Please refer to the list of Free Time Opportunities. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions. We’ll then regroup with our Group Leader at the hotel in Cascais for a pre-dinner drink, to discuss the program so far, to ask any questions, and to get to know our fellow Road Scholars better.

Dinner: At a typical Fado House, we’ll have a plated meal with a glass of wine and water included as we discover this time-honored genre of Portuguese music, recognized in 2011 by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Other beverages available for purchase. .

Evening: While at the Fado House, we’ll meet the performers and enjoy a unique, behind-the-scenes discussion on the history and tradition of this UNESCO-listed fusion of music and poetry before enjoying a Fado performance by leading local singers.

Activity note: Walking about 2 miles throughout the day; additional periods of standing at museums; some uneven surfaces and steps. Driving to/from and around Lisbon; approximately 2.5 hours total aboard the motorcoach.

Breakfast: Hotel buffet.

Morning: After driving from Cascais to the outskirts of Lisbon, we’ll begin an expert-led field trip through the Gulbenkian Foundation which, comprised of over 6000 works, is one of the most comprehensive private art collections in Portugal and was bequeathed to the city by the Portuguese oil magnate of Armenian origin, Calouste Gulbenkian.

Lunch: Lunch to day is at a local restaurant in Lisbon, and includes a plated meal with mineral water and complimentary glass of wine.

Afternoon: We’ll then regroup and transfer to Belém for a field-trip led by a local expert. This district, located on the Tagus River southwest of Lisbon, is where the navigators of the 15th century set sail. While here, we’ll visit the UNESCO site of the Jeronimos Monastery and the Royal Coach Museum before returning to Cascais

Cape Roca, Sintra & Royal Palace

Activity note: Walking about 2 miles throughout the day; cobblestones, steep slopes, many steps and uneven paving all around Sintra and the Palace. Driving approx. 15 miles one way; about ½ hour.

Breakfast: Hotel buffet.

Morning: Setting out from the hotel, our morning drive along the coast will bring us to Cape Roca, the most westerly point of continental Europe. As we travel along, soak in the rugged coastline, rocky 100 meter high cliffs, and the windswept beaches of the Cape originally known to the Romans as Promontorium Magnum. We’ll make a photo stop en route for a chance to stretch our legs and fully appreciate the beauty of the area. Afterwards, we’ll continue to Sintra where we’ll explore the Royal Palace – Palacio Nacional da Vila – with a local expert who will provide commentary. The main building, with an architectural style combining Gothic, Manueline and Moorish influences, dates from the 14th century, while the wings were added in the 16th century. The interior contains remarkable decorations, including 16th and 17th century tiles. Following our field trip, we’ll continue to the town center for some time for independent exploration in the old village of Sintra with its narrow, cobbled streets.

Lunch: Lunch is included today at a local restaurant in Sintra

Afternoon: Once we return to Cascais, the remainder of the afternoon will be free. Early evening, we’ll rendezvous for a motor coach transfer to our dinner location.

Dinner: Farewell Dinner at Hotel Palácio Estoril - this venue was home to numerous members of European royalty who took refuge in Portugal's neutral territory during the Second World War .The hotel bar was also the haunt of many British and German spies. Later, these stories of intrigue and espionage inspired famous novelists and filmmakers and the hotel served as the set for the James Bond movie "On Her Majesty's Secret Service".

A Local Winery, Azeitão, Wrap-Up Session

Activity note: Walking about 1-2 miles throughout the day; periods of standing at the winery; uneven ground and slopes in Palmela. Driving approx. 28 miles one way to Palmela; about 1 hour.

Breakfast: Hotel buffet.

Morning: Transferring by motorcoach from the hotel, we’ll journey through the Arrabida Mountain Range situated south of Lisbon. As we drive through the natural park, we’ll stop to visit a local producer of Moscatel Wines. Following a brief explanation of the company’s history, we’ll enjoy a walkthrough of the ancient cellars and enjoy a tasting of some of the wines produced by José Maria da Fonseca.

Lunch: Lunch today is at Casa da Bassaqueira a "Quinta", or wine estate, dating from the 18th century

Afternoon: We’ll then drive back to Cascais. The remainder of the afternoon will be free to do what you wish, whether that is more exploration of the city, enjoying the amenities of the hotel, preparing for the program’s conclusion tomorrow, or just relaxing.

Dinner: On your own to enjoy what you like.

Evening: We’ll join with the group at the hotel for a program wrap-up and a farewell drink. Share some of your favorite experiences from the program with new Road Scholar friends. The remainder of the evening will be at leisure. Be sure to prepare for check-out and departures in the morning.
