At a Glance

With a grand group of fellow Road Scholars and instructors, immerse yourself in Lisbon life during this gala event. Walk along the city’s cobbled streets and learn about the azulejos on display through the city’s colorful architecture. Journey along the coast, through the surrounding countryside and into the Arrabida Mountain Range to see how olive trees, cork trees and Portuguese vines are cultivated, and learn about a church and a 14th-century palace. This culturally rich city and its surrounding towns, villages and farmsteads are home to endless historical, artistic and culinary discoveries, offering something for everyone on a great global get-together.

  • Learn about Portugal’s history during a series of lectures with a post-doctorate research fellow from the Portuguese ministry of education, and explore the streets of this beautiful city to put your history lessons in perspective.
  • Visit the coastal town of Cascais to learn about the iconic and colorful Portuguese “azulejos” at a tile factory, and discover a UNESCO Church in nearby Belém.
  • Explore art, architecture and agriculture of Portugal with visits to a palace, the Gulbenkian private art collection, a winery and a farmstead in nearby towns and villages.

General Notes

This program has a maximum of 120 participants.The large group will be split into smaller groups with a max of 24. To maintain a small group feel amid a large group program, the order of the daily schedule will vary per group. Smaller groups will each do different activities during the day, joining back together as a large group for some programming.
