We’ll begin the morning at the hotel with an introductory lecture given by a local expert historian who specializes in the history and people of Portugal. Later, we’ll board our motorcoach and drive north of Lisbon to visit the rural property of Companhia das Lezírias, a traditional Portuguese farmstead where olive and cork trees grow, wine is produced, and the renowned Lusitano horse is raised. Here, we’ll learn from a local expert about rural life relating to these specific aspects.
At the Companhia das Lezírias farmstead, we’ll be treated to a typical Portuguese lunch.
Afterwards we’ll drive back to Lisbon where our local expert will lead a walking field trip through the charming historic quarters of the old city. We’ll discover the ancient cobbled streets of the Baixa (downtown) district and learn about Western Europe’s oldest city, which has been colonized over the centuries by Celts, Moors and Romans. Our walk will conclude at the hotel with time to freshen up before dinner before a motorcoach transfer to the restaurant for dinner.
At a typical Fado House, we’ll have a plated meal with a glass of wine and water included as we discover this time-honored genre of Portuguese music, recognized in 2011 by UNESCO on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Other beverages available for purchase.
While at the Fado House, we’ll meet the performers and enjoy a unique, behind-the-scenes discussion on the history and tradition of this UNESCO-listed fusion of music and poetry before enjoying a Fado performance by leading local singers.
