At a Glance

High in Ecuador’s southern Andes mountains, learn or hone your Spanish-speaking skills in Cuenca, a 450-year-old valley town known for its beautiful colonial architecture, laid-back culture and agreeable weather. On a six-week adventure in the heart of Cuenca, live like a local in your own apartment while joining in daily language classes — beginning, intermediate or advanced levels — and exceptional field trips to further explore the region. While you experience living in a new country independently, you’ll be supported by a Road Scholar Group Leader who’s always on call to help.
Activity Level
Keep the Pace
Cuenca’s public bus system is well-organized and clean, but walking is the easiest way to get around to school, the grocery store and city sites. There is uneven terrain, cobblestone streets, and many unavoidable stairs. The mountain city’s elevation is 8,370 feet.

Best of all, you'll ...

  • Live like a native Ecuadorian as you move into your own apartment and explore local cafes, museums and more.
  • Improve your Spanish during daily language classes and opportunities to practice your new skills as you maneuver through daily life in the city.
  • Join your Group Leader and fellow participants for weekly field trips and a three-day excursion in the Galápagos Islands to cap your adventure.
