Arrival, Orientation, Welcome Dinner
Ft. Lauderdale
D
Embassy Suites by Hilton Fort Lauderdale

Activity note: Hotel check-in from 4:00 p.m.

Afternoon: After transferring to the hotel for check-in, take some time to relax before orientation. Orientation: The Group Leader will greet everyone and lead introductions. We will review the up-to-date program schedule and any changes, discuss roles and responsibilities, logistics, safety guidelines, emergency procedures, and answer any questions you may have. In addition to lectures and field trips exclusively for our Road Scholar group, you are invited to take advantage of the many activities and events aboard ship that are separate from the Road Scholar program. The time available in each port is set by the cruise line. Whenever possible, the Road Scholar daily schedule indicates port arrival and departure times (subject to change by the cruise line). This may mean that free time in port is limited. Regardless of the time in port, Road Scholar delivers a robust educational program. All routes, field trips, and excursions are subject to change as weather and sea conditions may affect the itinerary. Sea conditions could affect the progress of the ship, making it run late and sometimes miss ports because it is not safe to dock. Because of this, the cruise itinerary should always be regarded as provisional. The operators reserve the right to change the content of field trips and excursions without prior notice. Free time is reserved for your personal independent exploration. Evenings at leisure offer opportunities to make the program more meaningful and memorable through personal independent exploration, attending performances or other events on your own, or simply relaxing and making new friends among fellow Road Scholars. The Group Leader will always be happy to offer suggestions. Program activities, schedules, personnel, and indicated distances or times may change due to local conditions/circumstances. In the event of changes, we will alert you as quickly as possible. Thank you for your understanding.

Dinner: We will enjoy a welcome dinner at the hotel.

Evening: At leisure. Continue getting to know your fellow Road Scholars, settle in, and get a good night's rest.

B,L,D
MS Amsterdam

Activity note: Getting on/off ship, motorcoach, motorboat; driving around 2 hours. Ship arrives 8:00 am; ship departs 5:00 pm.

Breakfast: Aboard ship.

Morning: Santa Marta history dates back to pre-Columbian indigenous communities that inhabited the area of the Sierra Nevada like the Tayrona people, renowned for their goldsmithing skills. In 1525, Don Rodrigo de Bastidas founded the city of Santa Marta, making it the first settlement of the conquistadors in Colombia and a commercial bridge between Santo Domingo, Spain, and South America. We will leave the bay of Santa Marta and drive north until we arrive to Don Diego River, where the Taironaka Private Natural Reserve is located. Here we can find the remains of a small Tayrona village built around 600 BCE and whose terraces are quite similar to those found in Pueblito and Ciudad Perdida. Upon arrival, we will take a motorboat for a 10-minute upriver ride to Taironaka. We’ll visit this reserve for an hour, where we can see a hut built by the Kogui tribe, who gather in this place to pray and socialize with other indigenous people of the region.

Lunch: We will enjoy a set-menu lunch, with water, coffee, and tea included.

Afternoon: Returning to Santa Marta, we will enjoy an expert-led walk around the city center before returning to the ship. The ship departs at 5:00 p.m.

Sail the Panama Canal
Fuerte Amador (Panama City)
B,L,D
MS Amsterdam

Activity note: Full day aboard the ship.

Breakfast: Aboard ship.

Morning: One of the largest and most difficult engineering projects ever undertaken, the canal had an enormous impact on shipping between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans by replacing the long and treacherous route via the Drake Passage and Cape Horn at the southernmost tip of South America. A ship sailing from New York to San Francisco via the canal travels 5,900 miles, well below half the 14,000 mile route around Cape Horn. The first concept of a canal near Panama dates to the early-16th century, but the first attempt to construct a canal began in 1880 under French leadership. It was abandoned, however, after 21,900 workers died, largely from disease (particularly malaria and yellow fever) and landslides. The United States took up the task and lost a further 5,600 workers before the canal finally opened in 1914.

Lunch: Aboard ship.

Afternoon: Our transit of the Panama Canal continues.

Dinner: Aboard ship.

Evening: Our ship arrives in port at 8:00 p.m. At leisure to enjoy the amenities aboard the ship, or to independently explore the port.

Salaverry (Trujillo)
B,L,D
MS Amsterdam

Activity note: Ship arrives 3:30 am; ship departs 5:00 pm.

Breakfast: Aboard ship.

Morning: We will visit beautiful colonial mansions in Trujillo and marvel at their well-preserved and imposing portals, balconies, and churches. We’ll begin in the magnificent main square, considered one of the most beautiful squares in the country, as well as one of the largest. Surrounding the square are the cathedral and various colonial and republican mansions, notable for their wrought-iron windows and beautifully decorated porticoes. The center of the square is dominated by the Monumento a La Libertad. We will continue with a stroll down Pizarro Street, reaching La Casa de la Emancipacion, a republican neoclassical architectural treasure. We’ll also visit the archaeology museum, where we will learn about the pre-Columbian cultures of the region. Then, we will visit the Arco Iris Temple (also known as Huaca Dragon) from the Chimú Culture, then we will visit the archeological complex of Chan Chan, the social and administrative center of the Chimú civilization. This place was home to 100,000 habitants who stubbornly resisted the expansion of the Inca Empire. The archeological remains of Chan Chan, 3.7 miles northeast of Trujillo, are rather well preserved although built with mud bricks, or adobe. Then we will continue to Huanchaco, a traditional seaside town, where we can watch the local fisherman on their traditional caballitos de totora, or reed boats.

Lunch: We’ll enjoy lunch in a local Peruvian restaurant.

Afternoon: Following lunch, we will return to the port. Free time to enjoy the amenities and activities on board the ship or to independently explore the port. The ship will depart at 5:00 p.m.

DAY

Callao (Lima)-Peru
Callao (Lima)
B,L,D
MS Amsterdam

Activity note: Ship arrives 10:00 am.

Breakfast: Aboard ship.

Morning: We will leave the ship and begin with an exploration of Colonial Lima. First, we will stop off at the main square to explore on foot and admire the exteriors of the government palace, the cathedral of Lima, and the city hall, all examples of Lima’s still-present colonial architectural opulence. We will visit the cathedral of Lima; as walking through the cathedral’s numerous chapels, we’ll travel to the past and discover various architectural styles from renaissance to neoclassical, and learn about the religious history of Peru.

Lunch: We will enjoy lunch at a local Peruvian restaurant, choosing from a set menu. Water, coffee, and tea are included, and other drinks are available for purchase.

Afternoon: Our field trip continues with the visit to San Francisco Convent, built in the 17th century, and its catacombs—an ancient underground cemetery. Then, we will visit Casa Aliaga, a colonial mansion that currently holds the distinction of being the oldest continuously inhabited private residence in the Southern Hemisphere.

Dinner: Aboard ship. You may also choose to get dinner out in the port independently.

Evening: At leisure.

DAY

Callao (Lima)-Peru
Callao (Lima)
B,L,D
MS Amsterdam

Activity note: Bring a swim suit, as we will get a chance to swim among the sea lions. Ship departs 6:00 pm.

Breakfast: Aboard ship.

Morning: Setting sail from a private pier in Callao, we will make our way through the many islets and rocky outcrops which have become a natural haven for seabirds, sea lions, and Humboldt penguins. We will move on through busy fishing waters until reaching Palomino Island, home to a large sea lion colony who we can get to know personally by swimming among them.

Lunch: At a local restaurant.

Afternoon: Back on dry land, our next stop in Lima’s El Callao neighborhood has an altogether alternative allure, with its long, fascinating, and checkered past. Originally a 16th-century port, El Callao rose to prominence as one of the major and most influential sea ports in all the Spanish colonies, resulting in 300 years of investment, architectural delights, and infrastructure projects, including South America’s first major railway hub. This affluence receded during the 20th century, when once grand plazas and ornate facades were replaced by an increasingly hostile reputation for gangland violence, social immobility, crime, and widespread poverty. However, as emphatically as the once vibrant El Callao district surrendered to decay, local fortunes have since turned, this time through the positive influences of art and culture, led by the exciting vision of the “Fugaz,” or “Shooting Star” project. The aim of Fugaz is to turn once fearsome, dilapidated streets into works of living and breathing cultural expression. As part of our expert-led field trip of the neighborhood, we’ll be led past some of the most emotive, enigmatic, and powerful murals which have come to symbolize a new beginning for El Callao. We will return to the ship and set sail at 6:00 p.m.

Easter Island
B,L,D
MS Amsterdam

Activity note: Ship arrives 8:00 am; ship departs 6:00 pm.

Breakfast: Aboard ship.

Morning: After leaving the ship, we will depart by bus for a full-day field study to archaeological sites along the south coast of Easter Island. We will first visit Vinapu, an archaeological site that has raised many questions over the years because of the similarity in appearance and construction to the pre-Columbian structures found in Cusco, Peru. Located here are the ruins of three notable temples, one of which has unusually finely shaped and fitted walls, constructed of huge stones. This wall is the finest example of stone construction on Rapa Nui. This site exhibits at least eight phases of construction over a very long period of time, including an ancient village site with the foundations of boat shaped houses and earth ovens.

Lunch: At Rano Raraku, we will enjoy a picnic lunch.

Afternoon: We will drive down the South Coast along the wind and wave carved shoreline, past many collapsed ahu (temple platform), toppled moai (statues), and fallen stone fences built by the sheep company. Our destination is Tongariki, the largest ahu on the island. Demolished in 1960 by the tremendous force of a Pacific tsunami generated by an earthquake in Valdivia, Chile, Tongariki has recently been restored by Chilean archaeologist Claudio Cristino & Sergio Rapu, with the help of Japanese archaeologists and the Rapa Nui people. It once again supports its 15 moai. There is evidence that through the years, more than 30 statues stood on the ahu. Also located here are spectacular petroglyphs of a turtle, a tuna fish, a birdman, faces of the god Makemake, and designs similar to those found on rongo rongo boards. We will return to the ship.

Auckland
B,L,D
MS Amsterdam

Activity note: Ship arrives 7:00 am; ship departs 6:00 pm.

Breakfast: Aboard ship.

Morning: Auckland, the “City of Sails,” is New Zealand’s largest city and over one-third of all New Zealanders live in the greater Auckland area. It has a cosmopolitan population and the high proportion of indigenous Maori and other Polynesian peoples from the Pacific Islands have contributed distinctive elements to its cultural mix. This mix has been heightened by increased immigration from a number of Asian nations throughout the last decade or two. A third of the city’s population was born outside New Zealand. We will drive across the Harbour Bridge to the north shore of the Waitemata Harbour, then pass through the sought-after suburban real estate of Devonport and view Auckland from North Head. Here, we’ll gain an idea of the myriad dormant volcanic cones that make up the Auckland landscape. We will cross back over the Auckland Harbour Bridge and transfer to Eden Garden, a 5.5 acre, award-winning garden, created in an abandoned quarry at the base of Mt Eden.

Lunch: At Eden Garden, we will have pre-ordered plated lunches. We will have time to explore the delightful gardens briefly on our own prior to or after lunch.

Afternoon: We’ll then visit Auckland’s War Memorial Museum for an expert-led exploration of the permanent exhibitions showing us patterns of Polynesian and European settlement. From the museum we will transfer back to the ship, which departs at 6:00 p.m.

Morning: Wellington, the capital of New Zealand since 1865, is located at the southern extremity of the North Island. Its magnificent amphitheater-like harbor, hemmed in by rugged hills, was formed by the flooding of the crater of a very large and long-extinct volcano. It provides a picturesque setting for the city’s distinctive wooden houses (many visitors have been known to draw parallels with San Francisco) set precariously on the steep hills. In addition to its role as the seat of government Wellington is a major seaport, rail and ferry center and a commercial and manufacturing hub. Its compact city center is immensely walkable and is full of life and interest. It has a vigorous cultural and artistic scene and is the home of many national cultural institutions. Our next field trip is to Zealandia, a sanctuary of native forest and lakes, a motorcoach ride of 10 minutes from the city center. Here, we will learn about some of New Zealand’s unique and fascinating birdlife. Expert volunteers will introduce these wonderful birds and explain the challenges of conserving rare and vulnerable species in New Zealand. We will learn the story of how local residents lobbied and volunteered to get this valley sanctuary set aside as a reserve and have it fully enclosed by predator-proof fencing.

Lunch: At a historic hotel close to Parliament, we will have pre-ordered plated lunches.

Afternoon: We will walk across to New Zealand’s parliament buildings—including the aptly-named Beehive—for an expert-led exploration. We’ll spend time learning about the relationship of the people of New Zealand and their government, as well as both the old and new government buildings and the historic and modern aspects of parliamentary democracy. We’ll then return to our vessel.

Activity note: Ship arrives 7:00 am.

Breakfast: Aboard ship.

Morning: Sydney’s stunning natural harbor forms the centerpiece of a dynamic city that has grown dramatically since its beginnings as a prison colony. Situated in the temperate area of Australia, Sydney is surrounded by national parks and has a beautiful range of flora and fauna. It is Australia’s largest city, with nearly 5 million citizens thriving in a multi-cultural society in a congenial climate. Sydney is dominated by Sydney Harbor, of which Port Jackson is only a small part. The city covers a large area, twice the size of London with half the population, and has large parks and sparkling sandy Pacific Ocean beaches, such as the well-known and very popular Bondi and Manly. We will disembark and be led on a walking exploration of the Rocks area, giving us an insight to Sydney’s colonial past. The Rocks was the area of Sydney first settled by the British and it has a fascinating history and wonderful Sydney sandstone buildings. We will then board our motorcoach and transfer to Sydney's beach-side suburbs looking out over the Tasman Sea.

Lunch: At a typical, local Australian RSL (Returned Services League) club in Bondi, we will have pre-ordered plated meals.

Afternoon: We’ll then have a chance to stretch our legs on Bondi beach. En route back to our vessel, we will visit South Head to get a perspective of the city and harbor.

Breakfast: Aboard ship.

Morning: We will take our motorcoach across the Sydney Harbor Bridge to Taronga Zoo, located on the north shore, with delightful views across the harbor to the city. Here we will begin our study of Australian fauna. As well as meeting kangaroos, koalas and wallabies—and hoping for a glimpse of the rather more elusive wombat, echidna, and platypus—we will have a lecture from one of the keepers introducing some of Australia’s more dangerous inhabitants: spiders and snakes.

Lunch: At Taronga Park Zoo, we will have a barbecue buffet lunch.

Afternoon: We’ll take a ferry back across Sydney Harbor to Circular Quay. We will walk around the Quay to the magnificent UNESCO World Heritage-listed Sydney Opera House, where we will have an expert-led exploration of this truly wonderful, iconic building, a masterpiece of late modern architecture. There are five main performance spaces at the Sydney Opera House—the Concert Hall, the Dame Joan Sutherland Theatre (formerly the Opera Theatre), the Drama Theatre, the Playhouse and the Studio—and the availability of these spaces open to visits changes from day to day. Breakfast: Aboard ship.

Morning: Darwin, the capital of the Northern Territory, is located on the Timor Sea. With a population of around 130,000, it is Australia’s least populous capital. Initially a pioneer outpost, in many ways Darwin is among Australia’s most modern and multicultural cities. It has close links to southern Asia, in particular countries such as Indonesia and East Timor, and is physically closer to a number of Asian capitals than it is to Canberra. Darwin has been rebuilt twice; initially following Japanese bombing raids during WWII and then again following the devastation wrought by Cyclone Tracy, which hit the city on Christmas Eve, 1974. This morning, we will transfer from the ship to explore Darwin. We will visit the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) and learn how aircraft and technology are used to deliver medical services in the huge distances of central northern Australia. Founded in 1928, the RFDS is now one of the largest and most comprehensive aeromedical organizations in the world, providing primary health care and 24-hour emergency service to people over an area of nearly 3 million square miles. While in the city, we will also learn about the bombing of Darwin in World War II. We will gain an understanding of the impact of the war on Darwin and its inhabitants, both civilian and military. We will return to the ship in time for lunch.

Morning: We will travel to one of the most spectacular sites in Asia, and the world’s largest Buddhist complex, Borobudur. Built in 800 CE during the reign of the Sailendra Dynasty, this shrine to Buddha was quickly abandoned following the decline of Buddhism and Hindu kingdoms and the rise of Islam in Indonesia. For centuries the complex laid forgotten under layers of volcanic ash, until its existence was made known to Sir Thomas Samford Raffles in 1814 by local Javanese. The site underwent a major restoration from 1975 to 1982, after which it was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Morning: Cochin (also known as Kochi), is a place with a fascinating history, where we will find synagogues, mosques, churches, and temples coexisting side-by-side. It is a vibrant city situated on the southwest corner of the Indian peninsula in the breathtakingly scenic and prosperous state of Kerala. After breakfast, we will leave the ship and board the motorcoach for a half-day discovery of Cochin, starting at Fort Cochin, where the Portuguese flag was first hoisted and, predating that, is also believed to be the oldest settlement in India. We’ll continue on to Mattancherry Palace, popularly known as the Dutch Palace, which was originally built by the Portuguese and later modified by the Dutch. In the palace, we will find a fine collection of mythological mural painting and traditional Keralite flooring. Next, we’ll explore St Francis Church, the oldest church built by Europeans in India. On his third visit to Kerala, Vasco da Gama, the Portuguese trader who reached India from Europe by sea, fell ill and died in Kochi. He was buried in the church and, although his remains were eventually taken back to Portugal, the site of his burial is marked inside. Continuing on along the Malabar Coast, we’ll stop to see the huge cantilevered Chinese fishing nets. Set up on teak and bamboo poles, the fishing nets are a legacy of the first visitors to this area.

Activity note: Ship arrives 7:00 am.

Breakfast: Aboard ship.

Morning: Mumbai is India's largest port, commercial and industrial center, fashion capital and heart of Bollywood (India's thriving movie industry) and an endlessly fascinating hive of activity. After breakfast, we will leave the ship and drive by motorcoach to the Gateway of India. Mumbai's most famous monument is the starting point for visitors exploring the city. It was built as a triumphal arch to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary in 1911. Ironically, when the Raj ended in 1947, this colonial symbol also became sort of an epitaph: the last of the British ships that set sail for England left from the Gateway. We’ll then visit Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (formerly Prince of Wales Museum). Founded in the early years of the 20th century, the museum houses approximately 50,000 exhibits of ancient Indian history as well as objects from foreign lands, categorized primarily into three sections: Art, Archaeology and Natural History. The museum houses Indus Valley Civilization artifacts, and other relics from ancient India. Next, we’ll visit the Mani Bhawan, located on leafy Laburnum Road, a quiet lane named after its shady tree. Mani Bhavan is the old Mumbai residence of Mahatma Gandhi. It's a two-storied structure that now houses a reference library with over 2000 books, a photo exhibition of the Mahatma's life, and well preserved memorabilia, including an old charkha or spinning wheel that Gandhiji used to use.

Lunch: At a local restaurant.

Afternoon: We will then witness Mumbai's colonial heritage through sites such as the Victorian Gothic-style Rajabhai Clock Tower, Mumbai University, High Court and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus. We’ll stop at a dhobi ghat, or a public laundry, to see the sight of many men collectively washing, rinsing, and drying clothes in the open air. We’ll then return to the ship.

It was founded in 1882 during the British colonial era. The slum grew in part because of an explosion of factories and residents from the peninsular city center and from the rural poor migrating into urban Mumbai. It is currently a multi-religious, multi-ethnic, diverse settlement with a total population estimated between 300,000 to about one million. Dharavi has an active informal economy in which numerous household enterprises employ many of the slum residents. It exports goods around the world. Leather, textiles, and pottery products are among the goods made inside Dharavi by the slum residents. The total annual turnover has been estimated at over US$ 500 million.

Morning: The Captain of our ship will comment the transit through the Suez Canal. The Suez Canal is a large, artificial maritime canal in Egypt west of the Sinai Peninsula. It is 101 miles long and 984 feet wide at its narrowest point, running between Port Said on the Mediterranean Sea, and Suez on the far northern shore of the Red Sea. The canal allows two-way water transportation between Europe and Asia without circumnavigation of Africa. Before its opening in 1869, goods were sometimes offloaded from ships and carried over land between the Mediterranean and the Red Sea. The canal comprises two parts, north and south of the Great Bitter Lake, linking the Mediterranean Sea to the Gulf of Suez on the Red Sea.

Breakfast: Aboard ship.

Morning: Pompeii, buried under ash during the devastating eruption of Vesuvius in 79 CE, provides an evocative and fascinating insight into the daily life of a prosperous Roman city. Among the extensive ruins are impressive temples, a forum, one of the largest known amphitheaters in the world, beautiful homes, and streets lined with shops and houses. After our visit to Pompeii, we’ll drive along the Amalfi Coast to admire the views along one of the world's most scenic coastlines.

Lunch: At a local restaurant, we will enjoy lunch with coffee, tea, water.

Afternoon: We will next take a motorcoach along the Via Caracciolo along the sea and through the district of Santa Lucia to admire the Castel dell’Ovo. We will then reach Piazza del Gesù for an expert-led walk of the historical center. Science and art are combined at the historical Pharmacy of the Incurable, which is also the best preserved of the ancient Hospital del Reame. This unsurpassed masterpiece of the Baroque-Rococo, it is both an efficient drug lab and representation of the scientific elite of the Enlightenment. This unique location is one of Naples’ secret gems, finely restored in recent years. Incurabili was intended for sufferers of syphilis, a disease that reached Naples in 1494 when the armies of Charles VIII invaded the city. The 18th century Pharmacy is an acclaimed masterpiece of Neapolitan medical science from the Age of Enlightenment, where the layout of the rooms reveals a rigorous control of space with flashes of color in the majolica tiles and vases and the gilded furniture and carvings.

Morning: We will ride from Cherbourg to Utah Beach, one of the two American landing sites on D-Day, for a Road Scholar-exclusive field trip. Our local expert will bring history to life as we discuss the Normandy invasion. We will also travel to Bayeux and examine the Bayeux Tapestry, an amazing representation of the Battle of Hastings in 1066. The tapestry is nearly 230 feet long and illustrates events leading up to the Norman conquest of England, including aspects of the military campaign and daily life found nowhere else. The principle figures are William, Duke of Normandy, and Harold, Earl of Wessex and later King of England, culminating in the Battle of Hastings. The origins of the tapestry remain a mystery. One tradition has it that William's wife Mathilda and her ladies-in-waiting embroidered it. We will have a self-directed exploration using audio guides and watch a film in English about the making of the tapestry.

Morning: On our transfer to Brussels, we will learn about the history of this fascinating city. We will take a walking tour of the market. There are over one million people who call this capital city home. The Grand Place was and is the heart of Brussels. It was destroyed in 1695 and rebuilt a few years later. The rich guilds transformed the square into one of the most splendid architectural settings in Europe. In the 19th century, the city developed from a medieval city to a modern one, with wide lanes, flanked by trees. Architects like Victor Horta played an important role in the modern style. One of the landmarks of the old city is the gothic Cathedral of Saints Michael and Gudule with wonderful stained glass windows. Last but not least during a walk we will pay a visit to the most famous citizen, “the manneken pis”, a statuette of the little boy, Julian.

Activity note: Ship arrives 8:00 am; ship departs 6:00 pm.

Breakfast: Aboard ship.

Morning: We’ll join a local expert and set out via motorcoach for a field trip to explore some of Amsterdam's historical canals. While our local expert offers commentary about the history of this iconic European capital, we’ll walk to some of the sites, including the Royal Palace and the National Monument at Dam Square, and admire the architecture. Originally built as Amsterdam's town hall, the Royal Palace on Dam Square was opened in 1655 and was designed in grand style to reflect the city's prosperity. It became a royal residence when the Emperor Napoleon established his brother Louis as King of Holland, who had it elaborately furnished. It reverted back to the city when the French empire crumbled only a few years later. It later became the city's central marketplace. Its turbulent history is nowhere apparent today and what we will see instead is the national monument of The Netherlands commemorating those who died in World War II. We will continue on to take a canal boat rid, to see Amsterdam as it is laid out and planned. We will glide along some of the 100 kilometers of canals with over one thousand bridges, all man-made and comprising a UNESCO World Heritage Site that rings the inner part of the city.

Activity note: You will be joining other travelers from the ship on today's shore field trip. Ship arrives 8:00 am; ship departs 6:00 pm.

Breakfast: Aboard ship.

Morning: We will leave by train from the blue waters of the Aurlandsfjord and its mild and fertile coastal climate. Two miles into the journey, we will see the beautifully-situated, tar-brown Flåm Stave Church, dating from 1667. At the farm next to the church is a tall obelisk in memory of poet Per Sivle, who was born here. After this comes the impressive Rjoandefossen waterfall, which throws itself 450 feet straight down the mountainside. The Flåm Railway crosses the valley and the river three times on its journey from Flåm to Myrdal. Instead of building bridges, the engineers opted to run the river through tunnels underneath the railway line. At Blomheller, we will see clear proof that the Flåm Valley is not just an idyllic and docile landscape. Traces in the mountainside left by avalanches and rock falls show that the forces of nature are not to be trifled with. We will see the new development of mountainside pastures for goats at Kårdal. As the train emerges from Flåm Railway’s longest tunnel—the 4,330 foot Nåli tunnel—a wonderful view opens up of the line ahead on four ledges up to Myrdal Station. The train makes a stop at the famous Kjosfossen waterfall. Nowhere else in the world can railway tourists enjoy the sight of such an impressive waterfall. The train then runs into a horseshoe tunnel that turns through 180 degrees inside the mountain. Through openings in the corniche, we are given a panorama of the wild Kårdal side, with the stream like a silver thread deep in the valley bottom. On the other side runs the steep Berg road, with the railway track embedded into a narrow ledge on the mountainside. The train passes Reinungavatnet, a glistening pearl of a mountain lake and the source of the Kjosfossen waterfall. At Vatnahalsen, we will get our last dramatic view of the mountains and moorland.
