The Gray Ghost provides a homey, cozy atmosphere and the leaders are accommodating, friendly, and participants find a "home away from home," from the cooks to the bus driver, leaders and friendly canines!

The program on hiking and wildlife in Southern Vermont was well organized, provided a good mixture of education and outdoor activity, and had an outstanding instructor. Bill Barnes

If you enjoy meeting people with diverse backgrounds and interests or want a different experience and perspective, I recommend signing up for a Road Scholar program. I just completed my first program, and it was pleasantly surprising, enjoyable and memorable. It truly was the best trip of my life!

Walks, Woods, Wildlife. Wonderful!

This was a good program overall but those considering it should be aware of a couple of things. First, there are really two programs - nature and railroads. Make sure you sign up for the version you want. Second, the activity level most days went well beyond the Road Scholar description of Active. Boots and hiking poles highly recommended. Third, the inn, while comfortable and serving delicious food, is a working inn that welcomes other guests - and their pets. So if you have animal allergies, just be aware of that.

We were fortunate enough to be in the inaugural session of this program, learning about the wildlife in this beautiful part of the country. We enjoyed our trip a lot. The inn is cozy and friendly. The meals were the best I have had at any Road Scholar trip. They even graciously accommodated my dietary restrictions. The warm common area around the fireplace helped encourage bonding among the participants. Carina and Mike were excellent leaders, providing the right balance of science, personal experience, and organization. Thus the hikes were fun learning experiences and not just chances to exercise. The evening programs were all well done and provided a nice balance to the hiking. There were two sessions with live animals, a guest wolf-advocate who was a great storyteller, and an entertaining musical duet. The activity level rating should be adjusted. When we signed up, it was rated Moderate. Shortly before the program started, it was changed to Active. I believe it should be rated Moderately Challenging – we did two hikes a day for a daily total of about four miles, some with rocks and hills. If you are up to the activity level of the hikes, you will be rewarded with a rich adventure in a unique and scenic setting.

This programme was very well thought out and very well presented. Walks were as varied as possible without spending too long on transport to trail heads. Carinna from the Inn and Mike from a local Nature Centre were just Fabulous!! There was just the right amount of time between meals and activities including time to socialise before dinner in the cozy and comfortable lounge at the inn. The inn is clean and comfortable -- meals were superb -- staff friendly and helpful (the cook even came out to check on specialty diets etc). If you go you will need boots or sturdy shoes and poles if you like them as the trails have some uneven or rocky spots. All in all this was one of the best of the dozen or so programmes we have been on.

I thoroughly enjoyed this first programme for walking and wildlife (in particular, predators and hawks and wolves). The accommodations at the Gray Ghost Inn were adequate and clean. The meals were always beautifully served and tasty. The vegetarian option well-suited my needs. The staff at the Inn under Carina Hellstrom were kind and helpful. The programme leaders were great and encouraged everyone to become a real part of the group. It was great getting to know Carina as well as she loves hiking and bringing her dogs with her. A really great Programme.
