At a Glance

Colorful, cultural, historical New Orleans is one of America’s favorite cities -- and for good reason. Although Mardi Gras day is in February, Mardi Gras magic is the air all year long. Jazz is found at every corner. Beignets are available 24/7. On our Road Scholar adventure, you and your grandchild will delight getting an up close look at how Mardi Gras floats are made. We’ll explore the birth of Jazz, and get a chance to hear live music. Meet a real Voodoo Priest and Priestess and learn the truth about this fascinating (and not creepy) religion. Your grandchild will learn so many things (don’t tell them), and you’ll create memories on this historical, culturally-interesting, kid-oriented, fun-filled adventure!
Activity Level
Keep the Pace
Walk 2-3 miles, some uneven terrain. Stairs in historic buildings with no elevators.

Best of all, you'll ...

  • Get a behind-the-scenes look at Mardi Gras and see the artists make gigantic sculptures in a float making facility. Dress up, make masks, and play a Mardi Gras Game.
  • Explore the history and listen to the delightful sounds of Jazz. Then visit WWOZ, New Orleans’ number one jazz radio station, to see where records are spun.
  • Play at the Music Box Village, a rustic- looking playground where we can use our bodies to interact with the electronics to make music.
