Feel the rhythm of the beat this morning as we walk to the MacPhail Center for Music for a day of musical enlightenment. MacPhail Center for Music was founded in 1907 and currently serves 13,200 students ages six weeks to over 100 years, with life-changing music education. The state-of-the-art facility houses over 200 teaching artists who instruct on 35 different instruments in a variety of musical styles, including jazz, classical, pop, rock, hip-hop, and world music. Many of MacPhail's students now perform with professional orchestras and theater companies, and teach at universities throughout the world. Many students also continue to play purely for their own enjoyment and their love of making music. We'll start the day off right with an exploration of the facility so we can learn some fun facts and also get to see all of the different instruments that are available to play. Next, we are joined by teaching artists who will lead us through various hands-on participatory music activities that will get our creative juices flowing. There is no prior musical knowledge or skill required for the activities today; the teaching artists at MacPhail will be leading us through activities that are fun for everyone!
We will enjoy a boxed lunch at MacPhail provided by a local caterer plus bottled water.
We'll keep the music going this afternoon with continuing activities. It is sure to be a fun-filled afternoon! Sit back and delight in a Road Scholar exclusive performance by the faculty at MacPhail. They will perform a concert for us, seamlessly interweaving the instruments we tried out earlier in the day. Throughout the performance, the musicians will provide us with verbal program notes to enhance our understanding of the context and fun facts about the music being performed.
We will enjoy a plated dinner at a local restaurant. Coffee, tea, water, soft drinks included; grandparents may purchase alcoholic beverages at their own expense.
At leisure. Return to the hotel after dinner, or explore Minneapolis and its riverfront on your own.
