Activity note: Hotel check-in from 3:00 p.m.

Afternoon: Orientation: The Group Leader will greet everyone and lead introductions. We will review the up-to-date program schedule, discuss roles and responsibilities, logistics, safety guidelines, emergency procedures, and answer questions. Periods in the schedule designated as “Free time” and “At leisure” offer opportunities to do what you like and make your experience even more meaningful and memorable according to your personal preferences. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions. Program activities, schedules, personnel, and indicated distances or times may change due to local circumstances/conditions. In the event of changes, we will alert you as quickly as possible. Thank you for your understanding.

Dinner: Welcome dinner at the hotel. Water is included in the program cost at all meals. Unless otherwise noted, all dinners are a 3-course set menu.

Evening: At leisure. Continue getting to know your fellow Road Scholars, settle in, and get a good night’s rest for the day ahead.

Activity note: Walking up to 3 miles, approximately 3 hours in the city and through the museum. Getting on/off a funicular. Getting on/off a motorcoach.

Breakfast: At the hotel. On this program, breakfasts will offer a typical European-style breakfast buffet with breads, cheeses, cold cuts, yogurt, fruit, cereals, juice, milk, coffee, tea, and water.

Morning: We'll enjoy an expert-led walking field trip through Bergen. Situated on the west coast of Norway, Bergen is Norway’s second-largest city with over 300,000 inhabitants. It is estimated that the city was founded in 1070. Bryggen, the old wharf of Bergen, is a reminder of the town’s importance as part of the Hanseatic League’s trading empire from the 14th to the mid-16th centuries. After discovering the Hanseatic Quarters, we'll take the Fløibanen funicular up to Mount Fløyen and enjoy the view over Bergen. We'll then hear a lecture about the city and its locals before walking back down to Bergen and the hotel.

Lunch: At a local fish market.

Afternoon: We'll board the motorcoach and ride to the south of Bergen to explore the home of the Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg. The house was turned into a museum in 1928. Edvard Grieg called his home 'Troldhaugen,' a combination of the Norwegian words for troll (trold) and haug (hilly); it is named for the nearby "Valley of the Trolls." After the museum, we'll drive to the Fantoft Stave Church. After exploring the church, we'll transfer back to the hotel.

Hiking in Bergen

Activity note: Getting on/off a motorcoach. Getting on/off a gondola. Walking up to 3 miles, approximately 2.5 hours on occasionally muddy mountain paths.

Breakfast: At the hotel.

Morning: We'll take the motorcoach to the valley station and ride a gondola up to Mount Ulriken, the highest mountain in Bergen, from which we'll take in the gorgeous views of the city and bay. We'll then embark a scenic hike on Mount Ulriken during which we'll hear a field lecture. After the hike, we'll take the gondola back down to Bergen and return to the hotel by motorcoach.

Lunch: This meal has been excluded from the program cost and is on your own to enjoy what you like. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions.

Afternoon: Free time. This period of time has been set aside for your personal independent exploration to see and do what interests you most. Please refer to the list of Free Time Opportunities. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions.

Transfer to Flåm, Biking Beautiful Fjord Landscapes

Activity note: Getting on/off a train. Biking up to 12.5 miles over inclines and declines. The first mile is steeply downhill with tight switchbacks, over gravel. You may elect to walk your bike during this steep part.

Breakfast: At the hotel.

Morning: We'll walk to the Bergen train station and then take a train to Myrdal. On this beautiful train ride, we will pass raging rivers, dramatic forests, and stunning mountains… the typical Norwegian landscapes!

Lunch: On your own on the train.

Afternoon: Upon arrival in Myrdal, your luggage will be transported to the hotel in Flåm and is limited to one piece of luggage and one piece of hand luggage. We'll get on mountain bikes for a spectacular, expert-led ride through typical Norwegian fjord landscapes, passing by waterfalls and mountains. The first part of the bike ride is steep and everyone needs to go slowly. The bike ride ends at Flåm, where we'll walk to the hotel, check in, and take some time to relax before dinner.

Flåm, Kayaking on the Nærøyfjord, Stegastein Platform

Activity note: Kayaking about 3 hours. (Please note that we will not kayak if there is bad weather or storms.) Getting on/off a motorcoach. Walking up to 3 miles, approximately 3 hours from the farm village back to Flåm.

Breakfast: At the hotel.

Morning: We'll walk to the shore and meet our expert kayaker. After preparations, we will set off on a kayaking trip along the shore where one can often see eagles. The waters are a deep blue and you will feel serene as you float inside the fjord. We'll finish the kayaking trip in Flåm.

Lunch: Explore local fare on your own in Flåm.

Afternoon: We'll get on the motorcoach and ride to the panorama platform Stegastein. We'll then drive to the Otternes farm village located halfway between Aurland and Flåm. The settlement comprises 27 dwellings and is beautifully situated with views of Aurlandsfjord. We'll view the exterior of the houses before starting the hike back to Flåm. (We may elect to take the motorcoach back to Flåm.)

Boat Ride on the Spectacular Nærøyfjord, Transfer to Lofthus

Activity note: Getting on/off a boat; ride is 2-3 hours. Getting on/off a motorcoach; driving about 57 miles (91.4 km), approximately 90 minutes to Lofthus.

Breakfast: At the hotel.

Morning: After breakfast, we'll take a boat to the village of Gudvangen. This spectacular boat ride goes through the narrow Nærøyfjord, passing farms high on the mountain, waterfalls, and small villages.

Lunch: At the Stalheim hotel with its great panoramic views.

Afternoon: From the Stalheim hotel, we'll take a motorcoach to the family owned Ullensvang Hotel and check in with some free time before dinner.

Hiking Queen Sonja’s Panoramic Hiking Trail

Activity note: Getting on/off a motorcoach. Walking up to 7 miles, approximately 5-6 hours on trails. Altitude gain approximately 2000', altitude loss approximately 2000'. Dirt road and mountain paths. The path is on some parts very close to the edge of the mountain.

Breakfast: At the hotel.

Morning: We'll board the motorcoach and ride to Røte for today's hike. The trail we will be hiking on is the only one of its kind to be honored with using Her Majesty, Queen Sonja’s title. In the past 20 years, this trail around Hotel Ullensvang – which she explores either by foot or on skis – has become one of her favorites. The trail is in the high mountains between Kinsarvik and Lofthus and offers magnificent fjord views. We will hike through forests and lush meadows up to the third panoramic point of this trail.

Lunch: At the midway point, we'll have sack lunches.

Afternoon: After lunch, we'll turn around and head back to Røte, then return to the hotel by motorcoach.

Dinner: At the hotel.

Evening: At leisure.

Kayaking Along the Hardangerfjord

Activity note: Getting on/off a motorcoach; driving about 25 miles, approximately 1 hour to Eidfjord. Kayaking up to 3 hours. Please note that we will not kayak if there is bad weather or storms.

Breakfast: At the hotel.

Morning: We will board the motorcoach and transfer to Eidfjord, where we'll begin a kayak trip along the eastern part of the Hardangerfjord, the second longest fjord in Norway and the fourth longest on earth.

Lunch: Along the way, we'll have sack lunches.

Afternoon: We'll conclude our kayak trip, reboard the coach, and return to the hotel.

Dinner: At the hotel.

Transfer to Bergen, Glacier Hike

Activity note: Getting on/off a motorcoach. Walking up to 3 miles, approximately 4 hours with stops on the glacier. Participants do not need prior experience in glacier hiking. The group will be divided into two smaller groups according to fitness level.

Breakfast: At the hotel.

Morning: We'll check out of the hotel and take a motorcoach to Jondal. We'll drive on a serpentine road up to the glacier, equip ourselves with crampons and helmets, and venture into the blue ice, while taking in a lecture on the area's glaciers.

Lunch: While on the glacier, we'll stop for a sack lunch.

Afternoon: We'll conclude our glacier hike, then ride on the motorcoach to Bergen and check in to the hotel.

Dinner: At the hotel. Share favorite experiences with new Road Scholar friends during our farewell dinner.

Evening: At leisure. Prepare for check-out and departure in the morning.
