Field station check-in from 3:00 p.m. Please keep in mind that the workshop schedule is tentative and subject to change due to weather, access, seasons, and other factors. When you arrive, you will receive an updated schedule specially tailored for that particular week.
Program Registration: 3:00-5:00 p.m. Join us at the Road Scholar table in the Education Center Lobby to register with the program staff and get your room assignment, welcome packet containing the up-to-date schedule that reflects any changes, other important information, and to confirm the time and location of the Orientation session. If you expect to arrive late, please contact the Chincoteague Bay Field Station for instructions on where to meet the group. Orientation: 5:00 p.m. The Group Leader will greet everyone and lead introductions. We will review the up-to-date program schedule, discuss roles and responsibilities, logistics, safety guidelines, emergency procedures, and answer questions. This is a Road Scholar Retreats program. Due to the nature of this particular program, community interaction and evening entertainment are not on the schedule. This is to ensure that you have enough time to work on your photography and complete your assignments. Locally sourced seafood is featured on the menu at each of the restaurants we will eat at during the week. On field trips, there are often multiple stops to look for photographic opportunities. Our travel time between locations does not usually exceed 30 minutes. Walking distance depends on the stop and significant distances are entirely optional. The terrain is very flat and there are no steps. You may be standing for several hours while photographing, but chairs are available should you need them. Periods in the schedule designated as “Free time” and “At leisure” offer opportunities to do what you like and make your experience even more meaningful and memorable according to your personal preferences. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions. Program activities, schedules, personnel, and indicated distances or times may change due to local circumstances/conditions. In the event of changes, we will alert you as quickly as possible. Thank you for your understanding.
In the Chincoteague Bay Field Station Dining Hall, our dining staff will prepare and serve your meal cafeteria style, with options ranging from a hot meal to a diverse salad bar. Coffee, tea, water, and a selection of juices and sodas are available.
The Lead Photographer will share memories and lessons learned from photographing the natural world. They will describe the week ahead and prepare you for shooting in the wild. Please note that the best piece of equipment you can bring to a photography program is flexibility and an open mind. Schedules can change due to weather, season, and animal movement. Your photographer will go over the tentative schedule with you the first night and will adjust the schedule as necessary throughout the week.
