Registration/Introductions/Program Orientation

Afternoon: Check into hotel after 3:00 PM, register for program between 4-4:15 PM in hotel meeting room or lobby. Introductions and Program Orientation follows begin at 4:15 PM. You need to be in excellent condition for this program - meaning able to climb, with 35 lb pack, 4500 ft in a day (3 Sears Towers, 4 Eiffel Towers, or 341 stories.) Longest hike approx. 8 miles. If you are not sure you are ready for this trip, we strongly recommend you consider taking #8144 or #7704 first. Any questions, call the provider. Scenic drive to North Rim Grand Canyon/hike North Kaibab Trail, Camp at Cottonwood Campground

Activity note: 6.9 miles 4240 vertical feet with packs

Breakfast: Breakfast at hotel.

Morning: Get up early. Travel by van to the canyon rim, driving past the San Francisco Peaks, the Vermillion Cliff, part of the Painted Desert, and the Kaibab Plaetau. Stretch, review hiking plan, Put on the packs and begin the journey. Hike down The North Kaibab Trail Trail through 500 million years of rock layers, 4240 vertical feet and 6.9 miles. The North Kaibab Trail is one of the most spectacular trails into the Grand Canyon. Begin discussions about Grand Canyon Geology. Arrive at Cottonwood Campground with its shady Cottonwood and Live Oak Trees. Note: this first day is a challenging 7 miles hike downhill 4240 vertical feet. If you have any knee issues, a brace is recommended.

Lunch: Sack lunch along the trail.

Afternoon: Arrive at Cottonwood campground. Set up camp. Begin to absorb the beauty and wonders of the Canyon.

Dinner: In-field meal prepared by staff and participants.

Evening: After a trail prepared dinner, kick back and relax under the stars.

Hike to Bright Angel Campground/Canyon Geology & Biology Presentation/NPS Ranger Presentation

Activity note: 8 miles 1600 vertical feet hike

Breakfast: In-field meal prepared by staff and participants.

Morning: Following breakfast, break camp, put on packs and continue hiking down the North Kaibab Trail; Stopping at Ribbon Falls, sacred to the Zuni Indians; through the Box composed of 1.8 billion year old Schist and Granite.We then hike to Bright Angel Campground. We hike about 7.6 miles and 1600 vertical feet down.

Lunch: In-field meal prepared by staff and participants.

Afternoon: Arrive in campground, set up camp. Free time to explore the Bright Angel Creek/ Phantom Ranch area. Continued discussions on Canyon geology and biology.

Dinner: In-field meal prepared by staff and participants.

Evening: After dinner, a presentation by NPS ranger. Optional trip to the canteen at Phantom Ranch.

Hike to Indian Garden Camp, optional hike to Plateau Point

Activity note: 4.7 miles 1400 vertical feet hike, with an optional 3 mile hike to Plateau Point.

Breakfast: In-field meal prepared by staff and participants.

Morning: This morning will enjoy a few more hours at Phantom ranch to relax before we hit the trail and begin our ascent up the Bright Angel Trail, rising 1400 ft over 4.7miles. We hike along the River Trail up the Devil's Corkscrew and into the Tapeats Narrows, where we can see the Great Unconformity, a 1.2 billion year gap in the Geologic record.

Lunch: Lunch on the trail, or in camp at Indian Gardens.

Afternoon: Enjoy an Optional 3 mile round trip hike out to Plateau Point, with views straight down to the Colorado River.

Dinner: In-field meal prepared by staff and participants.

Hike to S Rim/Scenic ride back to Flagstaff

Activity note: 4.7 mile 3060 vertical feet hike

Breakfast: In-field meal prepared by staff and participants.

Morning: After breakfast and early camp break, begin the final climb to the S Rim. It is only 4.7 miles and 3060 vertical feet and you are ready for it.

Lunch: Lunch on the trail.

Afternoon: Enjoy the scenic drive back to Flagstaff and a well deserved shower.

Dinner: Celebratory dinner at local restaurant.

Evening: After a hot shower in the hotel, dinner at the restaurant, program wrap-up and farewells.
