The Roads Scholar trip to Cinque Terre and Tuscany was a dream come true for me! The guides were OUTSTANDING! They were caring, extremely professional, well versed and had delightful personalities as an added bonus! The atmosphere was fun-filled, while providing the educational element I was looking for. Other participants were warm, friendly and eager to get to know each other. I am already thinking about which RS trip will be my next one! I LOVED every minute of my Cinque Terre/Tuscany adventure and would even do this same trip again! Kimberly Halle Wilmington, NC

Please read this review carefully if you are considering this trip. RS does NOT adequately describe the treacherous nature of some portions of the hiking trails. I had a potentially catastrophic fall down a cliff. By the grace of God, the area where I fell had an outcropping of vines and I suffered only bruises and cuts. I shudder to think what the outcome would have been if there had been stones or a sheer drop to the sea (as many portions of the trails did have) I know RS classifies this program as physically challenging but there is a world of difference between "challenging" and "one misstep and you might go hurtling down a cliff to your death." (As someone who is in decent physical shape, works out regularly and walks 5-7 miles per day, I have no problem with intense or long duration exercise but risking your life is an entirely different matter.) The group leader, Leonardo, and, RS hike leader Boris, both responded immediately and effectively to the accident and I can't praise them highly enough. The other participants in the program were also great in assisting me after the accident and accompanying me the rest of the way to the end of the trail. A big Thank You to all. The non-hiking portion of the program was great and Portovenere is stunningly beautiful. Again, if you are an experienced hiker who doesn't mind risking life and limb on treacherous trails, sign up. If not, pass on this program and chose a less intense program in this beautiful part of the world.

This program was just what I expected and what was advertised. The group leader and all of the hikes were amazing and the location was perfect! If you enjoy Italy and hiking, this program is for you!

Great program in a beautiful location. Be aware that the hikes are more challenging than one might conclude from the description on the website.

Beautiful scenery, very nice hotel, wonderful people. The hikes were challenging but doable. You had better like to eat a lot of fish if you choose this tour!

This trip was fabulous! The hikes were challenging, but what we expected and trained for. Our leader, Bennie was terrific and our daily hiking guides were top-notch. Each day was fun and rewarding. The food was exceptional. We had a wonderful group of fellow hikers! All in all it was a fantastic trip! We highly reccommend this trip to other hikers who want a physically challenging experience in a beautiful setting!

This trip has extremely difficult hiking. You must be in excellent condition to hike the trails. Views are breathtaking, trails are *hard*.

We are midwesterners from a generally flat and peaceful part of the world. Hiking up and down cliffs was a challenging and rewarding experience. Learning the history of this area made us appreciate the challenges that the ancient inhabitants faced in this area.

Beautiful hikes in the Cinque Terra, with views of the Mediterranean Sea and vineyards. Wonderful restaurants at the end of the trails. The only drawback was that some trails were crowded.

This trip was more than a vacation. It was an experience of a lifetime for me . Absolutely fantastic food, beautiful hiking, and fantastic guides . The people in our group could not have been nicer. The hiking was straight up, rugged climbing, very strenuous for me. However, there was always an alternative option of reaching the next destination by bus or train. I opted out of hiking one day and took the train to the next town, Monterroso and did some fantastic shopping. Many people in the group were in great shape, and the hiking was easier for them, but I definitely had fun going at my own pace. Our guide Leonardo was kind and caring, as well as our other guide, Boris. The educational quality was very good. I learned very much about the region.

I loved the tour. I celebrated my 70th birtday with some of the nicest people in the world. The hiking was challenging but I did it and really enjoyed the beauty of the area. The trip was very close to perfect and I will find other Road Scholar adventures soon.

Road Scholar is a great way to travel the world as a student of culture rather than a tourist. The itineraries, guides, lectures with professors, and authentic community connections allow for an experience that is deep and meaningful for all who participate.

This hiking adventure is a wonderful way to get to know the Cinque Terre region! We enjoyed the trails and amazing views of this area, several unique eating establishments, and enjoyed hiking with delightful new friends.

Beautiful scenery and very good food, but the Cinque Terre villages are now filled with tourists and businesses serving tourists. If you're trying to connect with Italian village life, then other trips might be a better choice. The hikes are not long, but there are sections where the stone steps are narrow and uneven, and a lot of the hiking is steep. Do not expect to be alone on the trails.

I see that you only post 5 star reviews, so there's no point in writing a review. You should post all reviews.

The Cinque Terre Hiking Trip was exceptional. It will be a challenge finding prettier views and scenery. The guides are fun and informative, the lodging and meals were great. The physical activity description is accurate and can be very challenging, however, the guides will prepare you for the next day's activities and can offer alternatives if the hiking is beyond someone's abilities. We finished this trip in mid-October and the trails were not crowded but we were told that it can be very crowded (and very hot)in the summer. I give this 10 out of 10 stars. Hope this helps!!

A thorough exploration of a charming and spectacular region in Italy. Challenging, entertaining, fun and delicious! I feel like I understand the region much better than any other tour I have taken has ever provided.

As healthy 71 year olds, we felt ready for a hiking tour of an area of Italy that we had heard so much about, but we hiked several times a week up stairs, through the woods, and along local beaches to fully prepare. To happily trek through the countryside with our wonderful group and be rewarded with fabulous food in charming restaurants in an incredible part of the world was magic. Thank you to Road Scholar for the kind and supportive guidance all along the way, making this an experience we will never forget! Bill and Kathy Normandin

We went up a lot of steps. I think this is simply a part of visiting Italian villages built upon absurdly steep mountains. Some of the scenery is out of this world. Escher's paintings of italian landscapes seem unreal, but you will learn they are not. The food and wine are terrific, and dinner on the last day at the little farm in Tuscany was once in a lifetime (so far) for me. We had flawless weather the whole time, which I suppose was a factor, but this program is a real winner.

Really enjoyed hiking the Cinque Terre with Road Scholar. The hikes and other tours were well organized and lots of fun! Our group leader Leonardo was great and kept us on track with all the activities that were planned. I would recommend this program.

Our program was a wonderful combination of interesting meals, education and exercise. The ability to go to a foreign country and have everything taken care of in advance made the entire experience relaxing and fun!

We participated in the "Hiking the Cinque Terra" Road Scholar Trip and were very pleased with our first Road Scholar trip. We were introduced to an incredibly lovely area or Italy that we could not have organized on our own, learned lots of interesting history that we did not know, and also found the trip a real gastronomical adventure. Road Scholar took care of all of the travel, hotel, trip details and the only thing left for us was to have full enjoyment of the trip without a worry.

The Cinque Terre has been on my bucket list for over 10 years and I was very please with the whole trip. I liked the variety and especially staying in Portovenere with less crowds.

The Cinque Terre hiking program was terrific! We had a different experience everyday with very knowledgeable and personable guides and instructors that provided excellent background information for each experience. A truly wonderful trip that exceeded my expectations!

The scenery was breathtaking at almost every moment, the lectures were interesting and informative, and the food was delicious! But what pulled it all together and made it perfect were the guides, both our ongoing program guide and the daily experts who accompanied us to specific spots. What a great combination!

I shared a magical time hiking the Cinque Terre in June with my niece. It was a pure joy! A mix of learning experiences such as visiting a working vineyard and marble quarry, enjoying evening lectures on local history, breath-taking views of the Italian Riviera from our energizing hikes from charming village to village, and fabulous food at fabulous restaurants. We all adored the guides and we had a blast as a group together.

A wonderfully organized way to see the Cinque Terre. Really great side trips and a terrific visit to a local vineyard with a fabulous dinner prepared by the vintner and his family and a local cheesemaker. Bread prepared to our order and baked in the wood fired oven along side a succulent roast. ...and the wine....

This is a five star review! I did not give it one star. The hiking is spectacular; walking through the hillside vineyards overlooking the Ligurian Sea is stunning. The local food, wine and gelato are wonderful. Fresh anchovies in lemon juice are not to be missed! The description of the physical activity needs to be more clear; on everyday but one, we climbed and descended between 650 and 1200 feet of elevation. In many places, steps are much taller than regular stairs. In other places, the path is steep and rocky, with occasional scrambling over bare rock. There are options on some days to skip some of the longer climbs, but to fully enjoy this unique area, be prepared for some rugged trails. The pace was not excessive, and there was a leader in the front and at the back of the group, allowing most people to hike at their own pace. I am 64, like to hike, more active than some but not a regular athlete. I climbed many flights of steps in preperation. Hike (and eat) in the Cinque Terre if you can!

Weather was warm and sunny for the week of May 20-28, 2017. Swimming in the hotel pool was welcome relief after warm hikes. Be sure to have hiking boots with good tread and hiking poles. The trails are steep and but the history, natural beauty and breath taking views make every moment memorable. Our group leader, lecturer and hiking guides were all outstanding.

Portovenere provided a lovely basecamp for this trip. Wonderful ferry rides to beginning points for hikes. Enthusiastic group leader. Do note that most hikes required 1000 feet of steep steps upward--and then 1000 feet back down again. Some trails narrow and very crowded. Hike leader modified plan to accommodate more members of group--but 1/4 of the participants still had to skip the most difficult hikes.

This was a fun, challenging experience with an excellent leader, wonderful meals that addressed my special dietary needs, and flawless transportation coordination. We met some interesting people, some with whom we would like to stay in touch. Train before you go. Walk as many staircases as possible both upward and downward, and make sure you have broken-in hiking boots with good tread.

One of the best trips of my life. (Just get rid of the walking tour of Sarzanna and stick to hikes.)

For anyone who enjoys hiking, this is a terrific program. The towns of the Cinque Terre are charming, the scenery is stunning and the base location in Portovenere is delightful. The food was excellent and the bus and train arrangements went without a hitch. I'll remember this trip fondly for a long time.

I have attended about 18 Road Scholar programs thus far and without hesitation I feel this was the best! It's my first international program and it has whetted my appetite for more. I loved the Cinque Terra! This program offers spectacular scenery, great food, a wonderful taste of northern Italy, and great hiking. Be aware, though, that the hiking, though not lengthy, is quite challenging...especially the climbs. The steps are uneven in height, very irregular, and STEEP! And seem to go on forever! Regardless, it is worth every moment, and the program leader, Roberta, makes every accommodation for the various physical capabilities of the group members. Highly recommend this program!!

I just returned from an amazing hiking trip to Cinque Terre with my mother. Road Scholar was accurate is stating the physical level needed to enjoy these trails, but if you enjoy hiking rougher terrain you should look into this trip! The views are incrediable, the meals and accommodations were excellant, and the lectures were very interesting. You just can't fully appreciate this unique part of Italy by doing a day trip from a bus tour or cruise ship. It was a very very special adventure trip and I enjoyed meeting all the other guests that came too! Go if you can!

Susan

I loved it! This program offered many options for people to take a bus instead of hiking difficult terrain. The accomodations and food alone were fabulous. It was challenging!

Terry
(5)

This was a wonderful trip that allowed us to explore the rugged, natural beauty of this region of Italy along with its rich culture and history. Some of the terrain was very rocky with steep climbs and would likely be limiting factor for those with balance or joint issues. Otherwise, a moderate level of fitness and endurance is all that's required. The food was fabulous and greatly added to the enjoyment of the trip. Overall it was a wonderful experience and was what we've come to expect from Road Scholar.

The Cinque Terre Hiking tour was a wonderful way to explore the hills and cliffs along the western coast and learn about the area's long and rich history. Beautiful scenery (a photographer's dream), good food, interesting architecture, and as always our experience - great group leader and guides.

This trip was quite physically challenging. It demanded strong legs, good knees, balance, agility, a sense of perspective and humor. Each day the hikes became more demanding over more difficult terrain. The guides were wonderful. Boris and Leonardo both proved to be exceptional. Although the group was large at 24, there were accommodations made and flexibility shown to accommodate the various skills and levels of vigor among the participants. The extraordinary scenery and breathtaking views made all the effort worthwhile. I am glad I went. I rate this trip as a once in a lifetime opportunity. Before you go, however, train well. If not, you may not enjoy the full scope of this adventure.

My hiking trip to Cinque Terre was amazing. Weather was perfect, Leonardo and Boris were excellent guides, food was wonderful. Hikes were definitely challenging. I am very proud of myself for meeting the challenge. I am grateful for the traveling companions who were welcoming to a solo traveler. I would recommend this trip to anyone looking for a challenging trip to a beautiful part of Italy.

This trip was all I'd hoped for and much more! I was already planning to be in Italy on a solo trip, and was concerned about hiking the Cinque Terre by myself. My first Road Scholar trip and it fit the bill perfectly. I will be looking forward to planning my next trip with Road Scholar.
