Activity note: Upon your arrival to the beautiful campus of Simpson College, the Conference Staff will assist you in making your first day memorable. Our friendly staff will help you with your luggage and make sure you are off to a great start. Meet your new friends (or reconnect with old friends), over light refreshments in the residence hall lounge. Next you're off to dinner followed by a short tour of campus. End your evening with a delightful Chamber Music Concert.

Behind the Scenes Opera Class and World Music.

Activity note: The Des Moines Metro Opera Orchestra Manager will discuss and analyze the instruction of orchestra and chamber music. A great opportunity to delve inside the great minds of extremely gifted musicians! You will attend their performance Sunday evening and have the chance to meet them on Monday! Get the inside scoop! A private performance in the afternoon along with hosting the DMMO staff singers at an afternoon tea where you can visit one-on-one with young opera singers.

Breakfast: Breakfast Buffet

Morning: Opera is Alive and Well class 8:30 - 10:00 a.m. followed by Des Moines Metro Opera Orchestra Manager 10:30am - 11:30am. The Orchestra Manager will discuss and analyze the instruction of orchestra and chamber music as it contrasts with the responsibilities of the opera orchestral player.

Lunch: Lunch in Pfeiffer Dining Hall

Afternoon: Dr. Patterson will engage participants in an interactive presentation featuring some of his recent works. A bonus feature of professional singers from Des Moines Metro Opera performing several songs will be both entertaining and educational! A light tea reception and opportunity to interact with performers and faculty will follow.

Dinner: Dinner in Pfeiffer Dining Hall

Evening: Scott Arens, Marketing Coordinator of Des Moines Metro Opera, will provide background information of the production of "Billy Budd" to add to your understanding and appreciation of this opera. A movie of "Billy Budd" will be available if you would like to learn more before the mainstage production.

From rollicking sea shanties to bombastic choral episodes, this searing opera will roar to life in a spectacular new production that transforms a British man o' war into a crucible for human faith and error.

Morning: Behind the Scenes Opera Class followed by a visit from the Des Moines Metro Opera's talented make-up artist. Witness the transformation of your instructor, Dr. Michael Patterson from your friendly professor into one of your favorite opera characters - hero or villain?

Afternoon: Apprentice Artist Rehearsal - apprentice artist rehearsal may be rescheduled or cancelled depending on Des Moines Metro Opera schedules.

Evening: Attend the Des Moines Metro Opera opera preview and mainstage performance of Britten's "Billy Bud". Billy Budd is Herman Melville's classic American tale adapted by E.M. Forster. It tells the story of the persecution and destruction of a young sailor by a predatory master-at-arms. From rollicking sea shanties and bombastic choral episodes, Britten's searing opera will roar to life in a spectacular new production that transforms a British man o' war into a crucible for human faith and error. Featuring Craig Verm as Billy Budd. Preview is followed by a mainstage performance with prime seating in Blank Performing Arts Center on the beautiful Simpson Campus, just steps away from your lodging!

"Stars of Tomorrow" Apprentice Artist Concert.

Activity note: "Stars of Tomorrow" Apprentice Artist Program is an insider's favorite and one of the best kept secrets. The evening features the 40 members of DMMO's Apprentice Artist Program performing with the acclaimed Festival Orchestra. A perfect event for all opera lovers or even first-time opera goers. The program will offer duets, trios, quartets and ensembles sung by some of America's most promising voices. Ticket and transportation included with tuition.

Morning: Behind the Scenes Opera Class followed by a visit with Lisa Hasson - Director of the DMMO Apprentice Program. Interactive conversations with Lisa Hasson are back by request! You will be amazed by the breadth and depth of detail and discipline the apprentices embrace as they further their careers in the world of professional opera.

Afternoon: This is your opportunity to get a peek behind the curtains, and lots of other places available only to Road Scholars at Simpson College! Tour Des Moines Metro Opera's backstage - if you're adventurous stand on stage and test out your voice on the same stage the professionals dominate. How do you compare? Maybe you'll be recruited for next years' opera season!

Evening: Des Moines Metro Opera presents "Stars of Tomorrow" Apprentice Artist Concert at Sheslow Auditorium on Drake University's campus in Des Moines, IA. Reception with apprentice artists follows concert. Tickets and transportation are included with your tuition.

Puccini's "Turandot" opera and stage fighting class.

Activity note: Puccini's "Turandot" is his final opera of an epic fairy tale set in Imperial China where the beautiful Princess Turandot reigns with an icy heart and three impossible riddles. In order to win her hand, suitors must answer all correctly or face death by beheading. When a mysterious stranger emerges, the proud Turnandot finds herself confronted with the most profound riddle of them all - love!

Morning: Experience combat stage fighting with Brian Robertson. Learn about techniques and weapons. They make it look so real! Take tips and some new skills home from this session to entertain friends at your next party! This will prove to be a lively morning of fun!

Lunch: Lunch in Dining Hall

Afternoon: Des Moines Metro Opera presents Puccini's "Turandot" in a matinee mainstage performance. Puccini's final opera is an epic fairy tale set in Imperial China where the beautiful Princess Turandot reign with an icy heart and three impossible riddles. The preview and opera are performed in Blank Performing Arts Center, just steps away from your lodging.

Morning: Behind the Scenes Class followed by a session where you have the opportunity to meet the company Stage Directors: How do they do it? Apprentice Artists Stage Directors are responsible for over 40 operatic scenes during the summer season. Hear about some of their experiences and escapades!

Lunch: Lunch in Dining Hall

Afternoon: "Company Members Present"...Company members from Des Moines Metro Opera share their personal journeys and insights into the world of opera. This is a rare opportunity to interact with these extremely talented professionals on a personal level.

Dinner: Semi-formal closing banquet will be served in the Matthew Simpson Room, the "front parlor" of Simpson College. Enjoy an upscale and relaxing dinner with your friends.
