The Cuban people are delightful, the program was very well organized and executed, and we encourage all who have any interest in Cuba, the Cuban people and/or Cuban-US relations to attend this program!

Cuba was in large part a mystery, or at least, not fully understood until I took this trip. One of the best experiences of the many Road Scholar trips I've taken.

This first trip to Cuba, and my first with Road Scholar proved to be far more detailed and comprehensive than I could ever have imagined. I enjoyed every aspect of it, including lectures, field trips, performances, etc.; and the interactions with Cubans and with my group will be well remembered for a long time. Our group leader, Julie, tour guide, Josè Luis, and driver Jackson were the absolute best at taking care of the group and providing everything we needed to safely enjoy all the wonderful experiences we shared together.

This was an excellent trip, full of wonderful surprises. Our Road Scholar Trip Guide Carol and our local guide Elene were both wonderful; personable, knowledgeable and caring with good senses of humor.

A wonderful way to experience Cuba and its people. The tour was so well organized and provided us with a variety of experiences and information that we would never have obtained on our own. We would go back in a minute!

Why Cuba? Why not? I would go back in a minute with Road Scholar.

This program is for those with minds open to differing cultures than their own. As Wade Davies is quoted, "The world in which you were born is just one model of reality. Other cultures are not failed attempts at being you; they are unique manifestations of the human spirit." This quote brought me to Road Scholar. Road Scholar presented me with Cuba without fail.

You have to experience it. I have had many persons ask....."How was Cuba?" I prefer to say...."Ask me questions." I learned more than I ever expected; From the regions of the island, to the population of the areas, to the economy, the medical services, the political history(that was clarified for me from our expert lecturers). We interacted with several Cubans and learned about their day to day lifestyles. This was one of my top three trips in life. The island, just some 90 miles from the last of the Key West, Florida islands, deserves our(US) attention. The States are so close to this island/country and their significant history and rich culture. The designated lectures and assorted site presentations were wholly informative. The RS staff for our group of under 20 persons, were attentive to us, from our motor coach driver, to our logistics leader, to our historical leader. I always felt I was always in good hands.

For those of us who grew up under the shadow of the Bay of Pigs and the Cuban Missile Crisis, this trip answered a lot of questions. It shed new light on the country and made us think a lot about what relations between the US and Cuba have been and could be in the future.

My husband, my sister and I,recently returned from a trip to Cuba. Cienfuegos to Havana. We had a wonderful time. The people and culture unbelievable . I would recommend it to anyone.

Cuba Today: People and Society Tour exceeded my expectations. Because of Hurricane Irma and the State Department requesting American not to go we were not sure if our trip would be cancelled. Thank goodness it wasn't. The people of Cuba are warm and very welcoming. I would rate this trip in my List of Top Tours.

Awesome trip! Learned a LOT! Would recommend this Road Scholar trip to anyone interested in a better understanding of a country that has been cut off from communication with the U.S. for several decades.

This program is a quick overview of some cities and areas of Cuba. It is a great country to visit. Would like more free time and less heavy food. Overall I would give Road Scholar a B grade for the program, they coordinated a lot of experiences. Would have liked more opportunity to interact with everyday person and more photo opps in rural areas. Sharon, St. Paul, MN

The people to people experience in Cuba was extremely educational and interesting. Our governments have huge differences, and seeing how Cubans are managing and enjoying their lives in a government so different from ours is critical in understanding those differences. I came home energized and ready to share so much of what I learned - and enjoyed!

After returning to the states I am often asked how was your trip? How was Cuba? And I find myself pausing, it's not that simple of an answer. Of course the trip was awesome! The Cuban people have a positive, hopeful spirit even with all the adversity they face each day! They have so much pride in their country. As our guides and lecturers often said, "It's complicated!" And it certainly is! I will be watching what happens in the next year as they elect a new President. I am hopeful that the right people are elected and the people of Cuba can move into the 21st century yet preserve their heritage and culture! I would give this trip the highest recommendation!

The Road Scholars approach to visiting Cuba certainly enhanced my stay their. I recognize that it is not the least expensive way to visit Cuba, but I thought is was well worth the extra and certainly provided good value.
Susan

This was a true people to people experience. During the trip we interacted with people of all ages and interests. I have come home with a much greater understanding and appreciation of the Cuban people. The classes were very informative and enhanced my increasing knowledge. I would recommend this trip to anyone wanting to understand the history of Cuba and the journey of its people.

We thoroughly enjoyed our 7-day trip to Havana and Cenfuego, Cuba. The trip included 3-professional lectures, interviews with local university students, seeing performances from very young, high school, dance troupe, women singers, guitar group, and more. We also enjoyed the museums and seeing the various home conditions. I encourage everyone to try this type of touring experience. Alan and May

Visiting Cuba with other Road Scholars was delightful. Our Cuban group leader made the trip a lot of fun and very informative. I would love to return to Cuba in three or five years, and see how things have changed. When I do return, I'll be a Road Scholar.

This program couldn't have been better! There was a good balance between traveling and staying in place, as well as listening and doing. I especially loved the open and rather free-wheeling conversations we were able to have with Cubans, and enjoyed the "surprises" that came along (don't want to give them away).
Claire

"Cuba Today" offers the opportunity to understand the island through interaction with Cubans . We met and spoke with students, dancers, artists, state workers, and a knowledgeable, charming Cuban study leader. We were treated to music, dance, informative, interesting lecture and a wide variety of cultural experiences. (The itinerary doesn't begin to reflect the depth of this trip) Cuba has a long way to go before it becomes a typical Caribbean destination, and traveling with Road Scholar will allow you to immerse yourself in the unique island and its culture, something that friends who traveled to Cuba on their own and picking up a guide when they arrived, were not successful in duplicating. Travel to Cuba - it will be one of the most meaningful experiences you can ever hope for.
Carol

Our guides made it an extra special experience. Cuba is fascinating if you love history. It has been at the crossroads of the old and new world since Christopher Columbus. Learning Cuban history provides a new perspective on American history that you thought you knew. The music and people are wonderful. It is a very interesting trip. We were comfortable and well looked after.

I have traveled a great deal, but the Road Scholar trip to Cuba (my first RS trip) was exceptional. I learned more and experienced far more than I could have if I had tried to organize the trip on my own. I'm so glad I traveled with Road Scholar and I'll be back.

Cuba Today: People to People is fascinating at this time of transition for both Cubans and Americans. Wendy was an exceptional skilled leader who quietly fostered a congenial and stimulating group dynamic. Hector was outstanding as a guide and ambassador for Cuba. Meeting and listening to Cubans of all ages and talents was more rewarding than I ever imagined. Great tour in many ways.

Road Scholar is more than a vacation. If you're looking to understand the culture and history of your destination, get more than a surface knowledge of the tourist traps and be enriched while you relax, then Road Scholar is the trip for you. I loved that all the details were taken care of for me and I experienced and learned more through the tour than I could have possibly done on my own.

Pro: informative with excellent guest lectures variety of cultural experiences with charming Cuban people hotels in good locations (but NOT the famous Hotel Nationale as originally advertised) nice balance between Havana and other locations really nice group of participants Con: almost no free time to soak in atmosphere, of which there is a lot! long meals with monotonous menus (but in very attractive restaurants)

My trip to Cuba with Road Scholars was more than I imagined. Seeing first hand the rich culture, the warmth of the Cuban people, the complex history, along with the interesting sights and sounds was amazing to witness. The very informative lectures enhanced the travel experience. It was a very engrossing trip that had me, and my diverse and interesting traveling companions going from sun up to sun down. As an avid amateur travel photographer, I was snapping image after image, trying to capture the experience to share later with friends and family at home. I am eager to return and explore more parts of Cuba. This introductory tour showed me the tenacity, and adaptability of the Cuban people. Except for a little bout of gastritis, and a couple other hick ups....it was a great trip. Cuba is revitalizing itself, preparing itself for the increased tourism, and Road Scholar provides a wonderful safe trip for those with curious minds, and who have an interest in experiencing first hand all that Cuba has to offer.

"Cuba Today: People and Society: Havana to Cienfuegos" was a well organized and carefully balanced cultural immersion experience. Our very personable, professional Road Scholar group leader and Cuban travel guide, well executed itinerary, and interactions with the people of Cuba made this a special experience and treasured memory. The good fortune of traveling with a very cohesive, inclusive group of interesting, friendly, kind people was a wonderful bonus.
Carol
(5)
Just got back from the Havana to Cienfuegos trip. It was a life changing experience Everyone ask what was the best part and anyone who goes says the people. I agree. The people are wonderful. We have to be there to understand the journey the last 50 years has been for them. We as a country need to support the new relationship developing between US and our nearest neighbor.
Marjorie

This is a trip for anyone wanting to be immersed in a different way of thinking about both Cuba and the USA and how they intercept. It will leave you with excellent information and many new questions to consider. It will open you up to new ways of thinking about everyday life.
Kristine

This is a great introduction to a world which has largely been closed off to Americans for over fifty years. If you are at all apprehensive about visiting what is still a third world country and especially if you don't speak Spanish, this is the program for you.
Maureen

The People to People program gives a great insight into the culture of Cuba as well as the complexity of Cuban-American relations. I highly recommend it!

Just returned from Cuba: People to People Havana to Cienfuegos Road Scholar trip. Would highly recommend this trip to all. What an adventure....learned so much about the country and it's people. Catherine

A trip of a lifetime! Scanning the catalogue for my next adventure!
Sharon
(5)
This program exceeded all of my expectations and makes me hungry for more! The sights and sounds of Havana thrill the senses, and the openness of the people I encountered challenged any erroneous or biased assumptions I may have held. The excursions to Cienfuegos, Trinidad, and Santa Clara were equally rich. I feel that the depth of cultural and political knowledge I gained through this program could not have been achieved elsewhere, or with a more delightful group of people.
Karen

Great educational value. Fun too! Guide and leader terrific. Office staff in Boston need to get more professional!
Ingrid
(5)
This trip was the perfect overview trip to Cuba, leaving me wanting much more. We are well travelled, yet, this is the first time we have ever been on a tour. This experience opened us up to the possibility of taking more tours although I hope that travel restrictions for non-Cuban Americans, like me, will be lifted as soon as possible.

This experience exceeded all my expectations. It gave me new perspectives on and interests in Cuba. Our tour directors were amazing -- smart, competent, kind. The small performances, lectures, field trips and interactions with Cubans were excellent and all very meaningful. My fellow travelers were a very bright and accepting group of folks. I return better informed, refreshed by the beauty and soulfulness of the Cuban people, seeing my own life through new eyes. I hope improved relations with the U.S. will offer them opportunities for great economic security without destroying their unique and rich culture.
Nancy

Our trip to Cuba was the trip of a lifetime. Anyone wanting to better understand Cuba's history, present, people, politics and the relationship between Cuba and the US should put this trip on the top of their list.

This was an experience filled with the sights, tastes, sounds, heart, and soul of the Cuban People. Our Cuban guide's skill at building strong relationships with the many Cuban's we visited enabled us to feel at home everywhere he took us. I return home with a wish to continue my relationship to Cuba to promote cultural exchange, economic growth and removal of embargo.
Jill
(5)
The trip exceeded my expectations largely due to the guides. Timothy and Ilen worked well together and had the ability to relate to each of the participants and to the group as a whole.

(5)
The Road Scholar trip to Cuba was very enlightening and informative. We met with and talked to many people of all ages about life in Cuba amd learned a great deal about a country that has been ignored for 50 years. End the Embargo!!!
Karen
(5)
Our visit to Cuba was terrific! Our Cuban guide and the instructors were very knowledgeable and open about life there. We heard great performances and saw beautiful museums and historic areas. The hotels were lovely, the food bountiful and tasty, and the Cubans welcoming. They displayed great pride in their country amid the crumbling infrastructure and need for economic changes. We had a great group and learned a lot!
Mary
(5)
I am continually amazed by the quality of the tour guides and group leaders. Road Scholars does an exceptional job at selecting just the right people to make their trips unforgettable. Thank you so much Tim and Elene. You both added so much to my experience.
Frances

I would recommend the Cuba People and Society to all in our country because we've been cut off from a country that is so close to ours. The Cubans were very welcoming. The sanitation system of Cuba was the most discouraging.
Janie
(5)
Had a great trip to Cuba. Our group was phenomenal - interacted very good with each other. We learned so much, had good food and fantastic entertainment. I do have a whole new appreciation for toilet seats!
Kristin
(5)
Great guide who made the porgam special. RS trip was very enriching. For the most part the restaurants were first class. But would suggest very heavy and one of the best and appreciated was a giant salad bar. Hotels maybe a 3. Jagar wasn't so good. No hot water for shower 2 of 3 days. My friend's phone didn't work, and when she told them they said they knew, but made no effort or interest to change it. The whole trip fun and very educational. Will take another one in the future with RS.
Marie
(5)
My trip to Cuba was a long-time dream come true. It was exciting to finally come face-to-face with a country and people I had only read about. Once again, I realized people everywhere are more alike than they are different. So glad I went!
Stephen

Road Scholar has developed wonderful programs that were well organized, professionally guided and complete in every way. I was more than impressed with the quality of content, professionalism of presentation and eye-opening presenters that make the travel and learning fun, exciting and enriching. I will tour with them again.

Cuba is a fascinating and complicated country and is certainly worth experiencing, especially with Road Scholar's excellent programming and staff. Through our intensive, well-organized agenda I think all of the people in our small group came away with a rich experience. In the words of one of our group members, it was, "Fabulous and intriguing on so many levels - personal, political, educational..."
Michael

A very interesting and informative program

If you have ever thought about going to Cuba, I urge you to go soon. It's hard to predict what Cuba will be like as more and more people visit. The trip I was on was remarkable; I gained much knowledge and a greater appreciation for Cuba and its people.
Kathleen

If you have the opportunity, go to Cuba now! So much is changing fast. This is the perfect time to see the results of the last 50 years of their history and the resilience, intelligence and innovation of the people. It is an opportunity to meet three generations of Cubans and see their country, the US and the world from their evolving perspectives.
Maureen

This trip, "Cuba Today: People and Society" is nine full days of meeting wonderful Cuban people at work and play, seeing beautiful museums, outdoor landmarks and having fabulous meals- many outdoors. The information about the history of Cuba is tied into the program to make it all the more interesting and immediate. It was quite a feelng to wade in the Bay of Pigs!
Mary

Learned.so much about Cuba and its citizens.
Michael

My wife and I have traveled a fair amount but going to Cuba with Road Scholar was the best program we have ever participated in. The leaders of the tour were smart, very informed, kind, fun and well organized. We are already looking for our next adventure with them.
Kathleen
(5)
I highly recommend this tour. We had never traveled with a group before and had some concerns about what the experience might be like, but it was terrific. Our tour guides were outstanding and we learned an amazing amount about this complex country in just a week. I left me wanting more, a sign of a good trip. We learning format is varied: formal lectures from three Cuban experts, on site lessons from the Cuban guide, visits with Cubans doing all sort of interesting things in art, music etc., visits to historic and architectural sites, and so much more. Four days in Cienfuegos and four in Havana let us see different parts of the country. The accommodations in both cities were very nice, lots of good food everywhere. This trip exceeded my expectations, which were pretty high to begin with. If you want to see Cuba, go now.
Judy
(5)
Cuba is amazingly interesting. Road Scholar gave me the opportunity to experience Cuba with informative lectures and guides who were open, honest and helpful. I loved the art, architecture and history, but the best part; the Cuban people themselves. I would love to go back!!
Tony

Our Cuban trip was delightful with wonderful in-country programs, great accommodations, charming restaurants with delicious meals and very comfortable buses. The March weather was delightful. Make this trip before travel from the US inundates the island!
William
(5)
I can't imagine touring Cuba at this time without being in an organizes group and the Road Scholar combination of experience, time in country and leadership from both a Road Scholar and local guide perspective were outstanding. Accommodations were great for Cuba and I can't think anyone else could provide a better experience.
Linwood
(5)
GREAT EXPERIENCE!!!!! What a wonderful way to learn about Cuba and to discard prejudices. The trip was comprehensive and well planned. The group leader and Cuban guide were the BEST. This was my first Road Scholar trip and if this one is any indication of what other offerings are like, it will not be my last.
Anne
(5)
We participated in the Cuba Today: People and Society tour March 8-March 16, 2016. It was fantastic! All the Cuba facts I've known for 50 years were updated and some dispelled! Everyone made us feel so welcome. The history, architecture and positive information received was exceptional. This tour was GREAT! We will definitely tour w/Road Scholar again.
Lud
(5)
This program is intellectually stimulating and thought provoking. Exposure to the current conditions and learning about the past and recent history of Cuba expanded my appreciation and understanding of this island nation. Person to person contact with various groups provided an intimate connection with people of the local communities we visited.
Mark
(5)
A truly insightful and enjoyable program. For Americans, especially, it is an up close and personal account of how our two histories have shaped each other and continue to evolve.
Sue
(5)
Very interesting trip! Make sure you have good walking shoes! The people are very nice to Americans and the island is just beautiful. Suggestion: Prod the Road Scholar folks to determine and let participants know at least 3.0-3.5 months before going , of the timing of the return charter flight. We would have booked tickets sooner in Miami (to go home) if we had better advance notice of the charter flight times.
Road Scholar
We are thrilled to hear you had such a great time Sue! Unfortunately, we also do not know the charter flight times this far in advance. The schedule is created and controlled by the Cuban authorities. As confirmed charter flight times are sent in the final information packet, approximately four weeks prior to the program start date, we must recommend not making individual flight arrangements from Miami until 40 days prior to departure. This is due to possible schedule changes, as these times are subject to change and Road Scholar has no control over these changes.

We got back from Cuba last night. The activities planned for this Road Scholar tour were fantastic. The tour guides were very informative, caring and compassionate. The schedule was packed with field trips, lectures and visits with many adults and children of Cuba. We joked that our free time at the most was 42 minutes. There was so much to do!!! We enjoyed the entire experience. This was our first Road Scholar tour! We will check out the offerings for future programs.
Roslyn
(5)
If you have any interest in Cuba, this is a great program! Keep in mind, though that because of the US government's people to people restrictions, you will be doing official programs from 8am to at least 4pm. If you are used to a slower pace, this might prove tiring. But this problem will exist for any tour group you go with, so you might as well go with this one, which had great accommodations and food, and extremely knowledgeable lecturers and tour guides.
Dale

This Cuba program is a "once in a lifetime" experience! What a wonderful way to visit this amazing and unique country. Our Road Scholar guides were absolutely delightful! They were highly professional, very competent, flexible and accommodating. We learned and experienced way more than we expected and more than on any other trip we've taken.

Returned Wed night from a fabulous experience in Cuba on the 2-9 to 2-17 People and Society trip. It was so educational, great speakers and meeting local business owners and/or teachers, musicians, etc was fabulous. We ate at privately owned restaurants (paladares) except for the breakfasts and I think three dinners we had at the govt hotels where we stayed (Nationale and Jagua). Our Cuban guide was the best ever(Jose Luis). There was an occasional person asking for a coin but I didn't experience any hustling for money. The Cuban people were very friendly. I'm glad I went now because tourism is going to increase and even on this trip there were many, many bus loads of tourists. Follow RS guidelines on what to eat or drink. Our trip enjoyed alot of fish choices; snapper, mahi, shrimp and lobster. Chicken, pork and beef in tomato sauce were also offered as meal choices if it was not a buffet. Great adventure!

A truly amazing experience, and my first with Road Scholar. The guides were incredible and every day we were greeted warmly by the Cuban people and educated about the history and present day challenges of a very complex country. We were entertained with music, dance and art that was phenomenal. Be prepared to be extremely careful about what you eat and drink. Many in our group forgot they were in a third world country and got sick. Also, be prepared for the crowds of tourists from all over Europe and Canada.

Thanks to our fantastic guides, Ilen and Alex, we gained new understanding of Cuba's complicated past and present. All compadres on the bus were informed, respectful and fun. And we were fortunate to share very moving moments with Cubans at lectures, performances, and events thoughtfully arranged by RS.

This was an educational adventure, not a vacation. Our guides were fantastic. The Cuban people were friendly. One needs to understand this is still a third world country governed by a dictator. Meals are limited to pork, shredded beef, chicken, and sometimes fish. Santitary conditions are way below par to the USA and so you eat with a risk and cannot drink public water nor ice. Was sick two days following the trip, a few in our group temporarily got sick during the trip. Some street people and all of the musicians hustle you for money. But over-all very educational.

This was an eye-opening trip to a nation we've been blocked from for years. It was well planned and informative. I'm a seasoned traveller and mark this as one of the very, very best I've ever done. As my first Road Scholar trip, it was a delight to discover how much I enjoyed it.

Our trip to Cuba was delightful, informative and extremely well planned. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to travel to Cuba before it becomes significantly changed

Traveling to Cuba with Road Scholar changed all my perceptions. The Cuban people are loving and kind. Cuba is ripe for opening up but they are wary of anyone but themselves making those changes. I can not wait to see how they handle this new American invasion!

I can only say the tour far exceeded our expectation. We have traveled with old, experienced tour companies, and this was our first time with Road Scholar. The tour and the guides were exceptional. Or hotels were more than expected. The food , on a whole, was excellent. We would definitely trave with them again.

Our guides, Lana and Hector, gave us a glimpse into the heart of the Cuban people through their own love of this country. Lana, the Road Scholar representative, is a true professional and kept us all informed, organized and "flexible". Hector, a Cuban national, is a great educator and his daily presentations gave us an intimate understanding of a country and people that, because of the history, can be "complicated". He provided us with insight that only a person born and raised in the culture could impart. I would recommend "Cuba Today: People and Society" without hesitation, and hope that my friends would have the pleasure and good fortune of being led by Lana and Hector. It was a wonderful experience and one that I will always treasure.

I treasure the opportunity to see Cuba on the brink of great and hopefully positive changes. Our guides and driver continually met the group's expectations while adjusting to changes with flexibility. The spirit of the Cuban people, old cars and architecture are truly unique.

The week in Cuba felt like a month, in a good way, packed with an amazing variety of unique experiences. It was non-stop all day and night every day so if you're not into that, this is not the trip for you. I learned so much about our neighbor country, and realized my knowledge of Cuba was frozen in time about 50 years ago. But it is a beautiful, complicated, and very much alive & fascinating place. I can't wait to go back, maybe for some birdwatching. RS kept us safe and comfortable and well-fed at all times.
