Activity note: Hotel check-in from 4:00 p.m.
Afternoon: Program Registration. After you have your room assignment, come to the Road Scholar table in the conference room at 5:00 p.m. to register with the program staff and get your welcome packet containing your name-tag, up-to-date schedule that reflects any last-minute changes, other important information, and to learn when and where the Orientation session will take place. If you arrive late, please ask for your packet when you check in. Orientation. The Group Leader will greet everyone and lead introductions. We will review the up-to-date program schedule, discuss roles and responsibilities, logistics, safety guidelines, emergency procedures, and answer questions. You'll have an informative overview of the program to come plus an opportunity to meet the program staff and your fellow participants during an introductory get-acquainted session. We'll review the updated schedule, answer any questions you may have, and cover responsibilities, safety guidelines, and emergency procedures. Periods in the schedule labeled “Free Time” and “At Leisure” offer opportunities to make the program more meaningful and memorable while going out to explore on your own, engaging in available activities independently, making new friends among fellow Road Scholars, or simply relaxing. The Group Leader will always be happy to offer suggestions. Program activities, schedules, personnel, and indicated distances or times may change due to local circumstances/conditions. In the event of changes, we will alert you as quickly as possible. Thank you for your understanding.
Dinner: We will enjoy a buffet style meal at a popular local restaurant located adjacent to the hotel; beverages to include coffee, tea, water. Other beverages available for purchase.
Evening: The remainder of the evening is at leisure for you to continue getting to know your fellow Road Scholars, settle in, and get a good night’s rest for the full day ahead.
Activity note: On/off motorcoach. Walking approximately 2 miles throughout the day. Driving approximately 2 miles roundtrip to/from Atlanta History Center. Approximately 10 minutes each way. Dinner restaurant approximately 5 blocks from hotel.
Breakfast: In the conference room, the buffet includes breads, fruit, eggs, bacon or sausage, yogurt, cereals, coffee, tea, water, and juices.
Morning: After a morning presentation on the history of Atlanta with a local expert in the conference room, we will board our motorcoach for the Atlanta History Museum, which is part of the Atlanta History Center and one of the largest history museums in the nation. On a self-led exploration, we’ll learn about the region's people from award-winning signature exhibitions. Our morning professor will travel to the museum to provide more commentary about the Civil War at the "Turning Point" exhibition.
Lunch: At the restaurant on the Swan House campus, we will enjoy a plated meal from a set menu, with coffee, tea, water; other beverages available for purchase.
Afternoon: We will walk to the nearby Swan Mansion for a docent-led field trip through the elegant, classically-styled mansion named for the swan motif that appears indoors and out. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it was built by Atlanta architect Philip Trammell Shutze in 1928 for Edward and Emily Inman, heirs to a cotton brokerage fortune.
Dinner: We will board our motorcoach for dinner at a popular local restaurant. Enjoy a plated dinner that includes coffee, tea, water. Other beverages available for purchase.
Evening: In the conference room, we will learn about Margaret Mitchell, the author of Gone with the Wind, the 1937 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction winner and the only book she wrote published in her lifetime. We’ll hear her story from a local expert that teaches for the Atlanta History Center.
Activity note: On/off motorcoach. Walking on uneven terrain on gravel and fine crushed pebbles around plantation homes in Roswell, approximately .5 mile. Approximately 27 miles from lunch restaurant to Bulloch Hall or around 1 hour. Smith Plantation to hotel approximately 14 miles or 45 minutes.
Breakfast: Hotel buffet.
Morning: We will travel by motorcoach with our group leader, a local expert, to the Martin Luther King Museum, followed by the Ebenezer Baptist Church. We will then travel by coach to the Carter Center and Presidential Library, where we will investigate the museum exhibits of President and Mrs. Carter at our own pace and enjoy the Japanese Garden.
Lunch: Lunch will be buffet style at a popular local restaurant. Tea and water provided with other beverages available for purchase.
Afternoon: We will travel by motorcoach to visit two plantations in Roswell. Bulloch Hall is a Greek Revival mansion, built in 1839, and was where President Theodore Roosevelt’s mother Martha lived as a child and married her husband, Theodore Roosevelt, Sr. We will next visit the Smith Plantation Home, built in 1845 and which retains much of the original furnishings and buildings. We will be led on these visits by a docent. Afterwards we will return to the hotel by motorcoach.
Dinner: Enjoy a meal at one of the many restaurants that surround your hotel or dine in at the hotel in the informal bar area. This meal has been excluded from your program cost.
Evening: At leisure.
Activity note: On/off motorcoach. 4 floors of exhibits at museum. Approximately 4.5 miles to/from High Museum of Art. Around 20 minutes each way.
Breakfast: Hotel buffet.
Morning: Free time. Take this opportunity for personal independent exploration to see and do what interests your most. Please refer to the list of Free Time Opportunities. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions, and a complimentary motorcoach will be available for downtown Atlanta points of interest.
Lunch: Deli lunch at the hotel with bottled water or soft drinks available.
Afternoon: We will travel by motorcoach for a self-led exploration of the High Museum of Art, where we’ll take in their special holiday exhibitions. Founded in 1905 as the Atlanta Art Association, The High is one of the preeminent art museums in the south, with over 11,000 works in its permanent collection, including American, European and African art and photography, ranging from the 19th century to the contemporary.
Dinner: Enjoy a buffet in the hotel conference room.
Evening: Two talented jazz musicians will join us in the conference room at the hotel to discuss the history of jazz and play selections to enhance their presentation.
Activity note: On/off motorcoach. Walking up to 1 mile over some uneven terrain. To Fox Theater around 5.5 miles or 30 minutes one way. To Atlanta Botanical Garden around 4 miles or 20 minutes one way.
Breakfast: Hotel buffet.
Morning: We will travel by motorcoach to the Margaret Mitchell Home for an expert-led visit of the building the author called home from 1925 to 1932, and where she wrote most of Gone with the Wind. After leaving the Margaret Mitchell Home, we will travel by coach to meet our local expert at The Fox Theatre, a former movie palace and current performing arts venue. The theatre is the centerpiece of the Fox Theatre Historic Distrct and boasts the second-largest theatre pipe organ in the country, affectionately nicknamed the Mighty Mo.
Lunch: This meal has been excluded from the program cost and is on your own to enjoy what you like. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions.
Afternoon: We will celebrate an early evening at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens Holiday Nights/Holiday Lights, a celebration of the season incorporating over a million lights. Be amazed at the electrical extravaganza that features spectacular light displays throughout the Garden, including the new high-tech Nature's Wonders, illuminating the world's natural phenomena through countless strands of synchronized dancing lights strung high over Storza Woods. Explore the Walk of Flames and Tunnel of Light along with favorites such as the Orchestral Orbs, Glittering Galaxy, Radiant Rainforest, and Model Trains that continue to make the exhibition a must-see holiday tradition.
Dinner: We will enjoy dinner at a specially selected restaurant that was founded in 1972 and has been the destination restaurant for many foodies featuring the classic New Orleans dining experience.
Evening: Celebrate New Year's Eve with champagne, dessert, and a special piano player at your restaurant, which is located directly across the street from your hotel. Dance, sing-a-long, stay as long into the night as you like or walk back across the street to your hotel at your convenience. It will be a fun and festive time to celebrate and to say goodbye to newfound friends.
