1
Registration, Orientation, Local History

Afternoon: Program Registration: 3:00-4:30p.m. After you have your room assignment at the motel, come to the Road Scholar table at the Museum, which is adjacent to the motel, and register with the program staff and get your welcome packet containing your name tags, an up-to-date schedule that reflects any last minute changes, listening devices, other important information, and to confirm where the orientation session will take place. If you arrive late, your packet will be at the motel desk.

Dinner: At a local restaurant, we will enjoy a plated meal, plus coffee, tea, or water: other beverages are available for purchase. For your dining pleasure this program includes "A Taste of the Island." We will be dining each evening at a different venue each known for its local cuisine and friendly service. Menu selections at each meal will include a vegetarian and a gluten-free option.

Evening: During the orientation session, the Group Leader will greet everyone and lead introductions. We will review the program schedule, and discuss roles and responsibilities, logistics, safety guidelines, emergency procedures and answer any of your questions. You will also be given an overview of the island's colorful history.

Beach Visit, Cruise Around the Island

Breakfast: Enjoy a hot breakfast buffet in the motel dining area.

Morning: We will ride by school bus to the Assateague National Seashore, the longest stretch of wild undeveloped beach on the mid-Atlantic coast at 37 miles long. As we walk the sandy shore, we'll learn about dune ecology from our group leader. Especially for kids: We'll have plenty of opportunity to hop in the water this morning! We'll return to the motel to change, and then walk to the Museum for lunch and to discover its exhibits, including a rare first-order Fresnel lens, surprising ship wreck finds, handmade artifacts from the past, the iconic ponies - Misty and Stormy, and much more.

Lunch: 12:00 We'll enjoy a boxed lunch at the Museum as we explore the displays.

Afternoon: We will travel by school bus from the Museum to Beebe Ranch, the original home of Misty, and meet a Beebe family member, who will talk about growing up with Misty. We will visit with the ponies at the ranch, some of whom are descendants of Misty.

Dinner: This meal has been excluded from your program cost and is on your own to enjoy what you like. The balance of the evening is free-time on your own to shop, sight-see or relax by the motel pool.The Group Leader will be happy to offer dining and activity suggestions.

Wildlife Refuge, NASA, Pony Show

Breakfast: Full, hot breakfast at the Best Western.

Morning: We'll enjoy a morning cruise on local waters, learning about history of the famous Chincoteague pony herd from when they first landed on the shores of Assateague Island. We may also observe eagles, osprey nests, waterfowl, porpoises and other marine life. Especially for kids: If the tides are just right, we may get to stop at a clam bed and get a hands-on, wet-feet experience with a working waterman.

Lunch: 12:00 We'll enjoy a plated lunch at a local restaurant.

Afternoon: Explore the interior of the Chincoteague Wildlife Refuge to look for wild ponies, petite Sika elk, nesting terrapin, otters, bald eagles, Delmarva Peninsula Fox Squirrel and other wildlife. A local wildlife expert with over 30 years experience, will be our instructor. We will be going into an area normally closed to the public, so be sure to bring your camera for this trip. Also carry along your binoculars if you have them.

Dinner: At a local restaurant, grandparents will enjoy a plated dinner while the kids have a pizza party and a crafts session at the Museum.

Evening: After reconvening at the Museum , we will travel by bus to the Chincoteague Pony Center. After looking through the Pony Center's collection of pony memorabilia, including Misty-related items, we'll enjoy a show produced by the Chincoteague Pony Drill Team led by Kendy Allen. The Center's ponies feature veterans of the pony swim, and a number of them are Misty descendants.

Hands-on Fun on the Beach, Lighthouse Climb, Family Dinner

Breakfast: Full, hot breakfast at the Best Western.

Morning: Put on your old shoes (no flip-flops or sandals) and get ready to get down and dirty! This morning we visit Tom's Cove and try our hands at mud mucking. National Park Service rangers will lead you on an exploration of the marsh and cove where you'll search for clams, oysters, snails, crabs and other assorted crustaceans.

Lunch: 12:00 Enjoy a plated dinner at a local restaurant.

Afternoon: We will board the bus for the NASA Visitor Center, where we'll learn about all the amazing science and rocket launches that are conducted on nearby Wallops Island. There we will explore the hands-on exhibits and maybe get a chance to don a real space suit. Access to NASA facilities may be restricted at times due to scheduled rocket launches, In the event of a launch schedule conflict, this portion of the program may be held in another location.

Dinner: Enjoy a plated dinner at a local restaurant.

Evening: Learn about Chincoteague's wild ponies from your group leader, and enjoy a night at the Museum. Complete the challenging Museum scavenger hunt. Learn about how the local seafood industry has changed over time.

Misty Movie at Island Theater, Free Time, Crab Feast

Breakfast: Full, hot breakfast at the Best Western.

Morning: Relax and enjoy watching the original movie of Misty of Chincoteague at the Island Theater where it premiered. See Misty's hoof prints in the sidewalk outside the newly restored theater.

Lunch: Take a short stroll to a lunch spot downtown as your Group Leader points out some of the downtown's history.

Afternoon: Enjoy an afternoon to explore your special interests on the island. Our staff will be ready to help you arrange activities such as horse riding lessons, boat tours, shopping, miniature golf, and even an old fashioned English high tea.

Dinner: At 5:00. this evening's special treat is a crab feast. Experienced "eaters" will be available to help if this is your first crab feast. Enjoy live entertainment featuring sea shanties and a special song written for the Museum's Road Scholars participants.

Special Visit to the Beebe Ranch, Program Concludes

Breakfast: Full, hot breakfast at the Best Western.

Morning: We'll travel to the Bateman Center in the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, where we'll learn about area wildlife and local and federal conservation efforts. We'll also take a trip to the newly renovated Assateague Lighthouse, where your group leader will explain the role of the facility in the Civil War and its dramatic change in location with the shifting sands. We may chose to climb to the top to take in the breathtaking views of the area if time and weather permit. This concludes our program.
