Afternoon: Check in at your hotel in Porto and have time to freshen up and relax before meeting for a welcome orientation and program briefing. The Group Leader will greet everyone and lead introductions. We will review the program theme, the up-to-date Daily Schedule and any changes, discuss safety guidelines, emergency procedures, roles and responsibilities, and answer any questions you may have. Indicated times are approximate. Program activities, schedules, and personnel may need to change due to local circumstances. In the event of changes, we will alert you as quickly as possible. Thank you for your understanding.

Dinner: Welcome dinner at the hotel or local restaurant.

Evening: Evening at leisure to rest and relax.

Breakfast: At the hotel.

Morning: Enjoy a lecture on an introduction to the History of Portugal and the Douro Valley led by a local historian. Afterwards, you will leave the hotel (with luggage) for a lecture/field trip discovering the city of Porto.

Lunch: At a local restaurant in Porto.

Afternoon: Continue the expert-led discovery of the old quarter and exploration of the historic city center of Porto by foot. Late this afternoon, arrive at the ship (by coach), check into cabins, and have an orientation before dinner. We will discuss safety guidelines, emergency procedures, and answer any questions you may have.

Activity note: Today's activities will involve a lot of walking. Participants with limited mobility might want to consider to sit out an activity at a local café.

Breakfast: On board.

Morning: The local expert guide will lead an exploration on the historic evolution of Guimaraes from a Medieval settlement into a modern town. Its rich building typology exemplifies the development of Portuguese architecture from the 15th to the 19th century through the consistent use of traditional building materials and techniques.

Lunch: On board.

Afternoon: This afternoon, walk along the river with your study leader passing under Gustav Eiffel bridge from 1877 or king Louis 1st bridge from 1886. Late in the afternoon enjoy a lecture about "Contemporary History of Portugal."

Morning: This morning discover the dramatic baroque style architecture of Porto, expressive of triumphant power and control. The word baroque probably derives from the ancient Portuguese noun "barroco" which is a pearl that is not round but of unpredictable and elaborate shape. The boat will start cruising upstream in the morning.

Afternoon: This afternoon your Study Leader will present a lecture on board the ship about the history of the vineyards of the Douro: The Great Porto Wines.

Afternoon: Led by your local expert, discover the city of Salamanca, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Learn about the Roman, Arabic and Christian architectural treasures found in this historic city.

Morning: Upon disembarking the ship (with luggage), and en route for Lisbon, take a detour to Coimbra, known as the City of Students. Your expert guide will give you a tour of the university and will explain the higher education system in Portugal. The library houses over 250,000 books influencing the study of Law, Philosophy and Theology. After that visit enjoy a walking discovery focusing on the history and folklore of Coimbra. Once the capital of Portugal, the city is filled with archaeological sites dating from the Roman occupation through the Middle Ages and Renaissance.

Lunch: At a local restaurant in Coimbra.

Afternoon: After your field trip, coach to Lisbon and check in to your hotel.

Dinner: At the hotel in Lisbon.

Evening: At leisure.

Breakfast: At the hotel.

Morning: We take a field trip to explore one of the National Palaces where kings and Queens of Portugal used to spend their holidays. Later we drive through the Forest of Sintra, a Unesco Site, to the coast of Cascais and Estoril and from here along the river Tagus back to Lisbon for lunch.

Lunch: Lunch on your own in the Belem area.

Afternoon: This afternoon, led by our local guide, we visit monuments that bear witness to Portugal's past glories. The Coach Museum, the Monument to the Discoveries, Belem Tower, and Jeronimos Church are all sites worth exploring.

Dinner: Traditional Fado Dinner at Casa de Linhares.

Evening: After dinner, enjoy a night coach excursion of Lisbon, driving past the beautiful, illuminated monuments.
