At a Glance

Three to four weeks each year, migrating elephant seals, birds, whales and butterflies converge on California’s scenic Central Coast during their annual pilgrimage. Breathtaking field trips and engaging lectures introduce you to these hardy voyagers, preparing you to observe gray whales, visit bird-viewing sites and study the Morro Bay Estuary at the Morro Bay Museum of Natural History.

Best of all, you'll ...

  • Become entranced by the gargles, grunts, squeals and trumpeting of the Elephant Seals as you observe them with our mammals expert.
  • View hundreds of monarchs at the “Butterfly Trees” of Pismo Beach.
  • Board a ship to search for gray whales at sea and explore a vineyard for a taste of the coast’s fine wines.

The leader and all instructors : 3 Ps Poised, Passionate, Prepared!

We really enjoyed this program. The Group Leader, Shannon Harmon, was a joy to be with. She has a great combination of extensive knowledge about the area and animals, and a great sense of humor and fun. Seeing the elephant seals was impressive -- they are really big and your viewing point is within 10 - 20 meters of the show. We had an unusually good chance to see sea otters, moms and pups, up close and very photographable. The expert presenters were excellent and getting to see a peregrine falcon at five feet was a special treat. We would very much recommend this program. One suggestion: come a day early or stay a day over to get time for a day doing Hearst Castle tours at San Simeon.

See nature in it's fullest in beautiful central California; coastal birds, elephant seals, sea otters and beautiful sunsets. The program director and instructors are top notch. This is a naturalist's ideal trip.

Great Migrations was a fabulous tour! Every detail was taken care of in advance. Accommodations were lovely and the food was delicious. Speakers were wonderful and prepared you for every activity. Each day was a new and interesting experience. If it’s not on your bucket list it should be. I’d do this tour over in a heartbeat!

The quality of the group leaders and experts that are part of the experience are fantastic! There was something for everyone and we were treated to a wonderful experience. Special surprises our leader Suzie, put together really added to the overall experience. She worked tirelessly to make sure that every day was the best that it could be. The lodging at Cambria Pines was beautiful. I guess my only issue could be the food served at the lodge. It seemed to rarely follow the menu provided and some meals, especially breakfast, seemed to the same every day. But there was always Salsa! We would definetely recommend this trip to our friends..

We really enjoyed it, best part was the elephant seals. Great! Nice accommodations. Hopefully number of monarchs will increase.

A fun and relaxing five days for those who enjoy interesting bits of nature ... and the chance to get away from winter for a while!

As a single adult I found this program to have drawn people with similar interests who included me . Il earned about other trips as well as sharing life experiences. I enjoyed the area which is beautiful and explored on my own during free time one of the places we had gone to as a group. Our leader was fun and informative and she offered new experiences over and above what was stated in the pamphlet.
