Registration, Orientation & Introductions, Welcome Dinner

Activity note: Note: Hotel check-in available from 3:00 p.m.

Afternoon: Program Registration: 3:30-4:30 p.m. After you have your room assignment, come over to the Road Scholar table at our private meeting room to register with the program staff and get your welcome packet containing your name-tag, up-to-date schedule that reflects any last-minute changes, and other important information. If you arrive late, please ask for your packet when you check in. Orientation: 4:30 p.m. The Group Leader will greet everyone and lead introductions. We will review the program theme, the up-to-date Daily Schedule and any changes, discuss safety guidelines, emergency procedures, roles and responsibilities, and answer any questions you may have. Indicated times are approximate. Program activities, schedules, and personnel may need to change due to local circumstances. In the event of changes, we will alert you as quickly as possible. Thank you for your understanding. We have set aside some free time in the schedule for your personal independent exploration.

Dinner: In the hotel, enjoy a plated meal with salad, entrée, side dishes including seasonal vegetables, rolls and butter, dessert, and beverage options including coffee, tea, water; other beverages available for purchase.

Evening: Continue getting to know your fellow participants, settle in, and get a good night’s rest for the day ahead.

U.S. Constitution, Swing/Big Band Jazz

Breakfast: In the hotel restaurant, the tasty breakfast buffet offers scrambled eggs, smoked bacon and grilled sausages, breakfast potatoes, oatmeal and cold cereals including granola, yogurts, fresh fruit, bagels and cream cheese, assorted breads and pastries, milk, juices, coffee, assorted teas, water.

Morning: A political scientist discusses our most sacred document: the U.S. Constitution. America has evolved dramatically since the Founding Fathers drafted the U.S. Constitution. Can this sacred document survive the challenges of the changes of the 21st century and beyond? We look at the evolution of the Constitution.

Lunch: In the hotel, our lunch buffet offers salad, an entrée, meats and breads for making sandwiches, fresh vegetables, dessert, and beverage choices including tea (iced or hot) and water; other beverages available for purchase.

Afternoon: We swing into the Big Band Jazz era with a musical expert. In this class, we focus in-depth on Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw.

Dinner: In the hotel.

Evening: Our discussion of Big Band Jazz continues with a study of Glenn Miller and the Dorsey Brothers.

U.S. Constitution, Part 2, Music of Mozart

Morning: Our fascinating discussion of the U.S. Constitution continues.

Lunch: In the hotel.

Afternoon: A classical music expert discusses the soaring music of Mozart. Since he first charmed audiences at the age of six with performances in his home town of Salzburg, Mozart has captured the minds and hearts of generations of concertgoers. Known early on as one of the greatest child prodigies the world has ever experienced, he matured into the finest pianist of his day and a master composer in every genre of music. By uncovering the truth behind the mysteries and complications that surround his life (and death), Mozart and his music will bring greater joy than ever.

Evening: Our sublime discussion of the marvelous music of Mozart continues.

U.S. Constitution, Engraved on the Heart: A History of Italy

Morning: Our riveting discussion of the U.S. Constitution concludes.

Lunch: In the hotel.

Afternoon: An antiquities professor tells us the story of Italy. Italy’s story is your story because it is western civilization’s story, with a plot as convoluted as a Fellini movie. Our class stars Leonardo da Vinci, Joe Bananas, Garibaldi, Archimedes, Caligula, Æneas, Santa Lucia, Saint Francis, Sophia Loren, Cyclops, Caesar, Verdi, Monteverdi, Machiavelli, Mussolini, Montessori, Michelangelo, the Etruscans, the Lombards, Casanova, Pythagoras, Lucia Borgia, Dante, Galileo, Vivaldi, Nero, Ulysses, Vandals (ancient & modern), and a cast of thousands, all lined up in chronological order, telling their story through the images of Italy’s great art.

New Year's Eve, Highlights of San Francisco, Performance

Activity note: Four hour bus trip to and from San Francisco includes stops for restroom breaks and photo ops.

Morning: Via private motorcoach and with a local expert on board, we have the opportunity to take a very behind-the-scenes exploration of the unusual, offbeat, and eclectic sites of every American's second hometown: San Francisco.

Lunch: In the hotel.

Afternoon: A musical expert leads a lively discussion on the flop hits that survived Broadway bombs. Blue Skies, I'll Be Seeing You, Begin the Beguinne, God Bless America-- It's hard to believe that these hugely popular songs were almost lost when the shows they were composed for closed after only a few runs. In some cases, songs were pulled from the original shows by the composers. Come hear these almost lost numbers and how they were miraculously revived. After class, enjoy a festive musical performance by your instructor.

Evening: In the hotel, enjoy New Year's Eve entertainment from a Bay Area performer.
