Morning: A classical music expert discusses the politics of music. The history of classical music is a turbulent thing as composers walked the line of pleasing their patrons and striving to create something wonderfully original. For some composers, a close-knit relationship with the social elite lead to thrilling advancements and for others it was a noose from which they had to cut themselves free. You'll hear the music of great composers like Haydn and Bach, revolutionaries such as Mozart and secret activists like Shostakovich. Get the inside scoop on these great composers and the political pressures that influenced their life's work.

Lunch: In the hotel, our lunch buffet offers salad, an entrée, meats and breads for making sandwiches, fresh vegetables, dessert, and beverage choices including tea (iced or hot) and water; other beverages available for purchase.

Afternoon: A classical music expert leads us through the symphony from Beethoven to the present. At the turn of the 19th century, Ludwig van Beethoven established the symphony as the leading genre of orchestral music. Composers since that time have made their boldest, most innovative musical ideas in the symphony genre. A symphonic journey will be undertaken from Beethoven’s masterpieces to present day symphonies, with stops along the way including Schubert, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Mahler, and Shostakovich among others.

Dinner: In the hotel.

Evening: Our examination of the symphony from Beethoven to the present continues.

Music of Mozart, Flop Hits from Broadway, Music Performance
Brisbane (San Francisco Airport), CA
B,L,D
DoubleTree by Hilton San Francisco Airport North

Breakfast: In the hotel.

Morning: A classical music expert discusses the music of Mozart. Since he first charmed audiences at the age of six with performances in his home town of Salzburg, Mozart has captured the minds and hearts of generations of concertgoers. Known early on as one of the greatest child prodigies the world has ever experienced, he matured into the finest pianist of his day and a master composer in every genre of music. By uncovering the truth behind the mysteries and complications that surround his life (and death), Mozart and his music will bring greater joy than ever.

Lunch: In the hotel.

Afternoon: A local music expert discusses flop hits from shows you may never have heard of because they bombed on Broadway. "Blue Skies," "I'll Be Seeing You," "Begin the Beguinne," "God Bless America"-- It's hard to believe that these hugely popular songs were almost lost when the shows they were composed for closed after only a few runs. In some cases, songs were pulled from the original shows by the composers. Come on along and hear these almost lost numbers and how they were miraculously revived.

Dinner: In the hotel.

Evening: In the hotel, we end the evening on a high note with a performance by a Bay Area musician.
