Getting on/off motorcoach; traveling about 40 miles, approximately 2 hours. Walking up to 1/2 mile; dirt path; gradual incline.
At the Railroad Park's restaurant, we will have a breakfast buffet featuring a variety of dishes such as pastries, muffins, scrambled eggs, breakfast meats, potatoes, fresh cut fruit, yogurt, oatmeal and beverages choices of juice, milk, coffee, tea, water.
In the Railroad Park Resort meeting room, we’ll have our first writing workshop with our Study Leader. We’ll learn more about writing and begin writing our own stories. We’ll ride via motorcoach to the Mt. Shasta Fish Hatchery. On arrival, we’ll set out on a walking field trip with our Study leader to observe hundreds of fingerlings — juvenile trout about the size of a finger. We’ll observe the trout leaping out of the water as we feed them from the handy food dispensers. Next, we will ride to McCloud Falls.
At McCloud Falls, we’ll have a box lunch including a sandwich, a side, a sweet treat, and a beverage.
We will explore trails at McCloud Falls with our Study Leader. As we walk, we’ll learn about the natural history of the area. Then, we will head to Mt. Shasta City Park. This is the source of the headwaters of the Sacramento River. We will explore (and taste!) the waters. We’ll then craft our own survival kit and play a variety of active games. Returning to Railroad Park, we’ll have an arts and crafts activity with our Study Leader. The remainder of the afternoon is free. Take a dip in the pool, go for a hike, socialize with fellow Road Scholars, or just relax. We will regroup at a time and place designated by our Group Leader and travel to the Dunsmuir Botanical Gardens for dinner.
At the gardens, we’ll have a family friendly Italian buffet dinner with a beverage choice of lemonade, tea, water.
We’ll set out on a walking field trip with our Study Leader to explore and learn about the gardens. On the bus ride back to Railroad Park, our Study Leader will introduce the next story. Get ready for tomorrow's book!
