At a Glance
Experience the aquatic treasures of John Pennekamp State Park in Key Largo during this outdoor adventure. Snorkel and kayak as you explore the continental United States’ only living coral reef. An expert delves into the Keys’ natural history and culture. Park rangers focus on reef fish and environmental threats to coral reefs and sea grass beds.
Activity Level
Outdoor: No Sweat
Kayaking up to four miles. Climbing in and out of kayak. Hiking less than one mile two days. Snorkeling up to 1.5 hours. Beginners encouraged.
Micro Group
These adventures feature our smallest group size, with 12 participants or fewer.
What You'll Learn
- Embark on a light hiking adventure in Everglades National Park to study the flra and fauna of the area.
- Visit the Windley Key Fossil Reef State Park and walk along eight-foot-high quarry walls to see ancient coral.
- Snorkel in living, shallow-water coral reefs.
General Notes
Our program is planned in advance, and snorkeling field trips and locations are subject to change based on local weather conditions during your program. Field trips are subject to cancellation in the event of rough sea conditions and high winds. In the event of cancellations, alternate activities will be planned. Van transfer provided between Miami and Key Largo at the start and end of program. All transfers by van.

Heather L Hamilton
Florida native Heather Hamilton has been exploring the beaches, lakes and forests of Florida’s wilderness since she was a little girl. As an experienced camper, hiker, biker, kayaker, fisher and photographer, Heather has seen Florida in just about every light on her extensive travels throughout the state. She studied culinary arts at the Art Institute in Fort Lauderdale and became a cook and pastry chef, but she changed careers several times before embracing her passion. She became a Master Naturalist and full-time Florida guide.

Howell Geib

Originally from New England, Howell Geib is trained as an architect, having graduated from Tulane University, and works to pursue his passion for the intersection of the natural world and the built environment. He continued his education in sustainable development and international relations, pursuing development programs in Africa, the Caribbean, and Western Europe. Throughout his career, he has lived in France, Hawaii, and Haiti. When not introducing Road Scholars to the natural world, Howie practices water sports like paddling.
