Choose Your Own Pace - Hiking the Appalachian Trail in October, 2019 was our first Road Scholar experience. It was a drive-able distance from our home and very reasonably priced so we thought it would be a good way to get our feet wet. It exceed all our expectations. The hikes were well run and gorgeous and we always felt safe and in good hands. The accommodation was wonderful, especially if you like quirky old hotels as we do. Food was wonderful and the "pack your own lunch" was a great way to handle food for the hike. The on-site Road Scholar representatives communicated everything we needed to know before we needed to know it. We were never wondering "what next". Lest the trip sound over managed, there was ample free time built into the week. The Naturalist, Rick Koval, was amazing. The only change we'd make to the program would be to spend more time with him. The other hikers on the trip were a varied and interesting group. Oddly, there wasn't a whiner or crab in the bunch, which we chalk up to luck, because how could that happen very often? Road Scholar prepared us well in advance of the trip. The only surprise for us was the extreme rocky condition of the AT in that location. The rocks made the trails extremely challenging for first-timers such as ourselves. Hiking on rocks is nothing like hiking on the paths we were accustomed to. However, the sense of accomplishment when we successfully completed a hike was wonderful. Bring well broken-in hiking boots, preferably with strong ankle support, and good quality trekking poles and you'll make it too. We are looking for our next trip.
