Activity note: Hotel check-in from 3:00 p.m.

Afternoon: Program Registration: After you have your room assignment, come over to the Road Scholar table in the hotel lobby to register with the program staff and get your welcome packet containing your name-tag, up-to-date schedule that reflects any last-minute changes, and other important information. If you arrive late, please ask for your packet when you check in. Orientation: The Group Leader will greet everyone and lead introductions. We will review the program theme, the up-to-date Daily Schedule and any changes, discuss safety guidelines, emergency procedures including contact numbers for key staff, roles and responsibilities, and answer any questions you may have. Because our programs are planned far in advance, game schedules were not available at the time of publication. They will be published on our website as soon as announced and will be included in preparatory materials sent following enrollment. We have set aside some free time in the schedule for your personal independent exploration. Please be aware that program activities, schedules, and personnel may need to change due to local circumstances. In the event of changes, we will alert you as quickly as possible. Thank you for your understanding.

Dinner: At the hotel, we will enjoy a tasty and nutritious catered meal featuring a variety of entrees, plus coffee (regular/decaf), tea (iced/hot), bottled water.

Evening: Spend time becoming better acquainted with participants and program staff. The rest of the evening is yours to continue making new friends or just to relax and prepare for the full day of activity ahead.

Baseball Spring Training, Afternoon Game

Activity note: Walk up to 1 mile to the stadium and climb stairs.

Breakfast: In the hotel breakfast area, enjoy a variety of hot items including breakfast sandwiches, fresh fruit, oatmeal, and more, plus coffee (regular/decaf), tea, and a variety of juices.

Morning: In our private meeting room at the hotel, Grapefruit vs Cactus, Teams in Florida and Arizona. A brief history and discuss which is the better location? Short break, then learn more about spring training baseball. A baseball tradition, spring training typically lasts for six weeks from mid February to just before Opening Day in early April. This series of practices and exhibition games give fans a sneak peek into the season while drawing them to the warmer locations where training occurs.

Lunch: This meal has been excluded from the program cost and is on your own to enjoy what you like in at the stadium.

Afternoon: From the hotel, we will board the bus and head to Jet Blue Stadium. GAME 1: Experience a spring training baseball to increase your knowledge of the sport. See the Baltimore Orioles play the Boston Red Sox Jet Blue Stadium their home spring training field in Ft. Myers. After the game, we will board the bus and return to the hotel.

Dinner: Dinner is not included tonight, we will stop on the way back to the hotel or you can dine in the hotel restaurant?

Evening: Enjoy a baseball themed DVD with your fellow baseball enthusiasts.

Activity note: Ride up to 2 hours on the way to Tampa. Shorter ride back to hotel in the evening. Walk up to 1 mile to the stadium and climb stairs.

Breakfast: At the hotel.

Morning: In our private meeting room, our baseball expert our instructor will introduce us to the history of the Negro League. Before Jackie Robinson played professional baseball, black athletes played in their own, separate leagues. From the early 1880’s, there were more than 200 all-black teams spread throughout the country. At its peak in the 1920’s, three separate negro leagues were established in the Northeast, the Southeast, and the Midwest. Short break, then earn more about early baseball.

Lunch: Enjoy lunch on your own in the hotel area. Or stay in and order pizza?

Afternoon: Free time to enjoy on your own. Rest up for the night game in Tampa, tickets are still pending.

Dinner: Dinner on your own at the game in Tampa, tickets still pending.

Evening: The plan is to leave Ft Myers approx. at 3:00pm in order to arrive at the field around 5:00-5:30pm. (Traffic can be heavy at times.) See Boston Red Sox play the New York Yankees at 6:35pm at Steinbrenner Field in Tampa. After game bus to hotel and it will be a much shorter trip back to the hotel.

Visit Thomas Edison & Ford Museum in Ft Myers

Activity note: Walk at your own pace up to 1.5 miles as you explore the Thomas Edison & Ford Homes & Museum

Breakfast: At the hotel.

Morning: By bus depart for The Edison & Ford Winter Estates is a world class cultural and educational resource honoring the innovation and creativity of two of America’s most influential individuals, Thomas Edison and Henry Ford. The 15,000 square foot, air conditioned Estates Museum inspires imagination, encourages intellectual exploration and stimulates the senses with galleries featuring an impressive collection of inventions, artifacts and special exhibits.

Lunch: Experience lunch at the museum with your fellow Red Sox fans.

Afternoon: "Main Gallery" On display in the Main Gallery are exhibits of Edison's work as an inventor including the telegraph, telephone, x-ray machine and Thomas Edison's original custom made Model T that was a gift from Henry Ford. Edison After Forty On loan from the Smithsonian Institution the exhibit includes images from Edison's life after the age of forty as well as Edison artifacts from the Estates collection. Edison Ford Camping Everglades Into the Wild The Museums newest exhibit chronicles the camping adventures of Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, and friends Harvey Firestone and John Burroughs. The "vagabonds" as they refer to themselves, camped throughout Florida and the United States. The exhibit includes Henry Ford's original 1918 Model T camper used on their camping expeditions. Many more areas to explore on the estates too numerous to list. After visit bus returns to the hotel.

Morning: At the hotel, a sports announcer from the Boston Red Sox will share the excitement from his career. We will board the motorcoach and transfer to the stadium.

Lunch: On your own at the stadium or a nearby restaurant.

Afternoon: GAME 3: Enjoy a 1:05pm game with the Pittsburgh Pirates playing the Boston Red Sox at their spring training home of Jet Blue Stadium in Ft Myers. After the game bus returns to the hotel.

Dinner: Dinner is included tonight at the hotel.

Evening: In our private meeting room at the hotel the group leader will offer a baseball trivia quiz and put your new knowledge to the test.
