1
Check-in, Registration, Orientation, Welcome Dinner

Activity note: Hotel check-in from 4:00 p.m.

Afternoon: Program Registration: After you have your room assignment, come over to the Road Scholar table to register with the program staff and get your welcome packet containing your name-tag, up-to-date schedule that reflects any last-minute changes, and other important information. If you arrive late, please ask for your packet when you check in. The Group Leader will greet everyone and lead introductions. We will review the program theme, the up-to-date Daily Schedule and any changes, discuss safety guidelines, emergency procedures, roles and responsibilities, and answer any questions you may have. Indicated times are approximate. Program activities, schedules, and personnel may need to change due to local circumstances. In the event of changes, we will alert you as quickly as possible. Thank you for your understanding. All classes and instruction will be led by our resident artist, Diane Hanley, a renowned artist known for her watercolors. We have set aside some free time in the schedule for your personal independent exploration. The Group Leader will often be available during free time to accompany informal excursions, activities, or meals that have been excluded from the program cost. You are welcome to join if you like, with any associated costs on your own.

Dinner: In a private room in the hotel, we’ll have a plated meal plus water, coffee, and tea.

Evening: Enjoy the remainder of the evening getting to know your fellow participants and discovering what you share beyond a love of lifelong learning.

Breakfast: At the hotel, we’ll enjoy a buffet featuring an assortment of hot and cold breakfast items, plus water, coffee, and tea.

Morning: In our first classroom session with Diane, we'll spend time thinking through concept, mood, space (including the negative space), and how the colors will work together. We will then work on adding texture and dimension to our Still Life.

Lunch: In a private room in the hotel, we’ll have a buffet plus water, coffee, and tea.

Afternoon: Under the expert guidance of our instructor, Diane Hanley, participants will receive constructive critique during this workshop.

Dinner: In a private room in the hotel, we’ll have a buffet plus water, coffee, and tea.

Evening: A local artist will join us for a watercolor demonstration.

Breakfast: At the hotel.

Morning: In our class this morning, Diane will lead an instruction on Painting on Yupo Paper. After the class, we’ll continue to focus on the theme of our program, color. Color is capable of transforming an image. Whether different shades or contrasting colors, this basic tool can completely alter the perception of a painting.

Lunch: At the hotel.

Afternoon: During this session, participants will be able to reflect upon their work and advance their skill with the assistance of constructive critique. This is a fantastic opportunity for feedback and guidance for the projects at hand.

Dinner: At the hotel.

Evening: At the hotel we’ll enjoy an instructional presentation to further delve into the theme of the program.

4
Plein Air Lecture, Field Trip to Ojai

Activity note: Motorcoach transportation to Ojai; Participants are responsible for carrying their own supplies for the plein air painting session.

Breakfast: At the hotel.

Morning: Before our field trip, Diane will lead a short class on Plein Air Painting Tips. We'll then journey from our hotel to Ojai via private motorcoach. This destination has a law in place prohibiting chain stores in order to promote local business and keep its unique flair. Surrounded by hills and mountains and a community focused on health and beauty, this small city is the perfect destination for watercolor painting. Upon arrival in Ojai, we'll visit local artists in their galleries or studios.

Lunch: At a local restaurant in Ojai, we'll enjoy a plated lunch with dessert, plus soda, coffee, or iced tea.

Afternoon: After lunch, we'll cross the street and arrive at Libby Park. Using all that we have learned so far, take in the surrounding beauty and paint with the help of the instructor. If you wish to take a break in your painting, you may explore other galleries in the surrounding area. At 3:00 p.m. our motorcoach will depart Ojai for the hotel.

Dinner: At the hotel.

Evening: At leisure.

Morning: In this final class we’ll continue mastering the power of color.

Lunch: At the hotel.

Afternoon: As we prepare our projects to be showcased in the art show, we will identify new techniques and concepts we have used during the week. Following class, enjoy some free time. The Museum of Ventura County is open until 5:00 p.m. and is walking distance from the hotel. Senior admission is $3.00.

Dinner: At the hotel. Our farewell dinner features the entrees we selected previously. (See “Notes” section for details.)

Evening: We’ll celebrate our art and all that we have learned with a group art show that will be set up in the hotel lobby. Each participant will display their works of art created during the week.

Morning: With Diane, we’ll have a final critique and examine the creative process each participant used while painting. No two processes are the same and each person works differently.
