Hotel and Class Registration/Orientation

Activity note: 3:00 p.m. Hotel Check-In Dinner 5-6:00 p.m. Orientation 6:30 p.m. Holt Lodge First Floor Meeting Room

Afternoon: Hotel and Program registration will begin at 3:00 p.m. with packet of Road Scholar information given upon arrival. The packet will contain name-tag, up-to-date schedule that reflects and last-minute changes, and other important information. If you arrive late, this packet will be available at the Orientation meeting held at 6:30 p.m. at the Holt Lodge, first floor meeting room.

Dinner: At the Lake View Dining Hall, we will enjoy cafeteria style dinner; beverage choices will include coffee, tea, water.

Evening: Orientation, 6:30 p.m.. The Group Leader will great everyone and lead introductions. We will review the up-to-date program schedule, discuss roles and responsibilities, logistics, safety guidelines, emergency procedures and answer questions. Periods in the schedule designated as "Free time" and 'At leisure" offer opportunities to do what you like and make your experience even more meaningful and memorable according to your personal preferences. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions. Program activities, schedules, personnel, and indicated distances or times may change due to local circumstances/conditions. In the event of changes, we will alert you as quickly as possible. Than you for your understanding.

Class begins/ Movie Night

Activity note: Class begins at 8:30 a.m. in the Jewelry room of the Craft House, a short, level walk from Holt Lodge. Entertainment begins at 6:30 p.m. and requires stepping on and off a bus.

Breakfast: Served in Lake Vies dining hall from 7:30 AM - 8:15 AM.

Morning: Starts at 8:30 a.m. with the instructor leading introductions; then we will proceed to safety instructions, instructional lecture and demonstration on carving. We will then select a project and wood to begin carving.

Lunch: Served at Lake View dining hall from 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM.

Afternoon: The instructor will demonstrate and work one-on-one with students as we learn the art of hand carving.

Dinner: Served in Lake View dining hall from 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM.

Evening: At 6:30 p.m., we will meet in the first floor meeting room in Holt Lodge where we will board a bus to travel a short distance into downtown Ripley to the Historic Alpine Theatre. A lecture on the history and revitalization of the theatre will be presented followed by a classic movie. Popcorn will be served.

Carving/Open Studio

Activity note: Carving class begins at 8:30 a.m.. Evening open studio will begin at 6:30 p.m. with the instructor present.

Breakfast: Served in LakevView dining hall from 7:30 AM - 8:15 AM.

Morning: We will continue with carving instructions from the instructor and work on our chosen project. We will discuss finishing techniques.

Lunch: Served in Lake View dining hall from 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

Afternoon: Returning to class, we will continue carving on our projects. Once a project is completed the instructor will review the piece with us and help us in selecting our next project..

Dinner: Served in Lake View dining hall from 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

Evening: Open studio will begin at 6:30 p.m. with the instructor present to answer questions and offer assistance.

Carving Class/Evening activities.

Activity note: Carving Class begins at 8:30 a.m.. Evening activities at 6:30 p.m.

Breakfast: Served in Lake View dining hall from 7:15 AM - 8:30 AM.

Morning: As we start our day of carving, the instructor will demonstrate additional techniques to add to your carving experience.

Lunch: Served in Lake View dining hall from 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM.

Afternoon: We will again spend the afternoon carving on selected projects and working with the instructor on new techniques.

Dinner: Served in Lake View dining hall from 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM.

Evening: At 6:30 p.m. we will gather in the Holt Lodge meeting room to travel a short distance to the authentic Appalachian Moonshine Distillery. Once at the distillery the owner will give a history of moonshine in West Virginia and a tour of the facilities. Tastings of the moonshine will be available to those who wish to partake.

Carving Class/Class Dinner/Open Studios Tour

Activity note: Carving class will begin at 8:30 a.m.. A class dinner will be held in the side dining room at 5:00-6:00 p.m. Open studio tour of all the classrooms will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Breakfast: Served in Lake View dining hall from 7:15 AM - 8:30 AM.

Morning: Under the assistance of the instructor, we will work to add the final touches and finishes to all our projects.

Lunch: Served in Lake View dining hall from 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM.

Afternoon: Following lunch, we will return to the classroom to work on sculptures and set up displays of our work in the classroom as we prepare for the evening Open Studio Tour.

Dinner: We will eat dinner together as a class in the side dining room to share and enjoy the experiences of the week.

Evening: Following dinner, we will proceed as a group to the Craft House and begin a tour of the classrooms. Each instructor will give a brief explanation of the weeks activities and students will showcase their projects.

Morning: As we put the finishing touches on our projects, the instructor will offer further ideas and techniques we can take home for future carving projects.

Lunch: Farewell dining hall meal, but if you are traveling early a brown bag lunch will be waiting for you to pick up. Please let the program coordinator know on Thursday evening you will be leaving early.
