Bike Whitetop Station to Damascus, Overview of Creeper Trail

Activity note: Early May temperatures average in the 40s in the early morning at the higher elevations on the trail. Participants should plan to dress in layers. Because this trip takes place prior to peak season, the trail will have ideal conditions. Expect light traffic and glimpses of lovely wildflowers!

Breakfast: Dining Hall at 4-H Center

Morning: Participants will be fitted for bikes and helmets before biking 17 miles downhill on the Virginia Creeper Trail from Whitetop Station (elevation 5520’) to Damascus (elevation 2100’). Expect temperature increases throughout the day as we drop in elevation. Trip includes intermediate biking through cool, shady national forest on a well-groomed trail.

Lunch: Picnic Lunch on the trail

Afternoon: Return to 4-H Center for Free Time followed by a historical overview of the Virginia Creeper Trail.

Dinner: Dining Hall at 4-H Center

Evening: Enjoy the fine craftsmanship of the Holston Mountain Artisans Co-op & Local Wood Carvers.

Activity note: Before breakfast, enjoy an optional bird walk around the 4-H Center campus with Program Director, Craig Makufka.

Breakfast: Dining Hall at 4-H Center

Morning: Bike 17 miles on the Virginia Creeper Trail from Abingdon to Damascus. Expect mostly level, steady grade, intermediate biking with great views from high railroad trestles. The temperature will increase throughout the day if sunny, but elevation changes will be negligible.

Lunch: Picnic Lunch on the trail

Afternoon: Return to 4-H Center for Free Time followed by a 4-H Center Overview & Tour.

Dinner: Dining Hall at 4-H Center

Evening: Attend The Classic Nashville Roadshow at the world-famous Barter Theatre, a professional repertory theater in Abingdon, VA.

Activity note: After Free Time, head to the DCC Phipp's Room for an optional Yoga class partnering with Whitetop Yoga Studio.

Breakfast: Dining Hall at 4-H Center

Morning: Bike 18 rural road miles past old cranberry bogs and beautiful river rock cabins in Shady Valley, Tennessee. Stop along the way to walk over Backbone Rock, sometimes called the world’s shortest tunnel, a relic left behind by the railroad industry. The outfitter’s van follows behind to serve as a buffer between bikers and hind traffic.

Lunch: Picnic Lunch – Pavilion at Backbone Rock

Afternoon: Return to 4-H Center for Free Time.

Dinner: Dining Hall at 4-H Center

Evening: Enjoy a private concert by local Celtic-inspired band Fire in the Kitchen – DCC Phipps Room

Breakfast: Dining Hall at 4-H Center

Morning: Bike 17 miles on the Virginia Creeper Trail from Whitetop Station to Damascus. Now that you’re familiar with this section, let loose and ride as hard or as easy as you like. This easy downhill section of the trail always reveals more beauty on the second pass!

Lunch: Picnic Lunch on the trail

Afternoon: Option 1 – Bike the last 18 miles of the Virginia Creeper Trail from Damascus to Abingdon. Option 2 – Hang up your helmet and take a trip in the van to Abingdon Winery. Afterward, return to 4-H Center for Free Time.

Dinner: Enjoy a local farm-to-table experience at the nationally celebrated Harvest Table Restaurant in Meadowview, VA, approximately 4 miles from the 4-H Center.
