A real bucket-list trip. Small ship is the way to go, and the ship staff, as well as our trip leaders made sure we had a perfect trip. In addition to whales, seals, sea lions, bears, eagles, orcas, northern lights, and glaciers, we also enjoyed kayaking and shore trips. We learned about and interacted with local native culture, people, music, and crafts. The food was amazing! Truly one of the best trips I've ever done. I felt sorry for the passengers of the big cruise ships we saw towards the end of the trip. They couldn't go the places and see the things that we could.

In addition to the educational content, the program's small ship provided daily opportunities to get to know our interesting companions on the ship

I encourage everyone who loves watching wildlife to consider the "Inside Passage Up Close" in Southeastern Alaska. Bears, bald eagles, whales, sea lions, salmons and more. What more can you ask for? Very well thought out list of great activities. Plus, being on a small boat (42 passengers all from RS) is much more rewarding for me than riding on a big monster cruise ship.

I would recommend a small boat cruise conducted by Road Scholar and may use Road Schalar again for another adventure...

The trip was great. We had good weather (in the 50's) the whole trip and it only rained on the last day we were there (when we were leaving). Larry West was a fantastic guide. He had alot of information about every aspect of the trip including the plants, animals, and all of the glaciers we visited. The crew on the ship was very friendly and helpful. Even got to do a bonfire during the trip. The boat offered great views of the glaciers we visited, and various wildlife on the shorelines.

This was an amazing adventure; however, it is not a level one.

The Alaska Inside Passage voyage was truly remarkable in many ways. I learned southeast Alaska is a rainforest and saw the most stunningly beautiful scenery both on the boat and walking through the trails on land. This is a trip everyone should consider in their lifetime!

Trip of a lifetime! I was glad I stayed an extra few days in Juneau so I could take helicopter rides to a dogsled camp and to see the top of the glaciers.

Knockout scenery, great guides and instructors, cocktails with glacier ice, and amazing glaciers, whales, sea lions, and bald eagles to boot. It's the perfect way to see southeast Alaska's inner passage.

What a great trip – a first experience in Alaska! The Baronoff Dream is indeed a dream, the weather was wonderful our leaders were terrific, and the sights are amazing! If you haven’t been to Alaska consider this trip. The southeast portion of Alaska with all the glaciers, the native culture and the gorgeous scenery is fascinating, rejuvenating and unforgettable!

The Alaska Close Up was my first Road Scholar experience. I now plan to have many, many more. The small boat experience meant close up to glaciers, waterfalls, wildlife, and on-shore excursions. It also meant only 44 participants with the ability to know everyone, but also enough variety to fit different personalities. The leaders and naturalists and crew were exceptional and the food gourmet.

This was a great trip through the northern part of the Inside Passage. Our ship, the Baranof Dream, was wonderful! It is a comfortable vessel that is small enough to go into some narrow bays that the large ships cannot access. We had a naturalist and true Alaska guide on board with us for the entire journey. The food was excellent—far surpassing our expectations! The emphasis is on the local native culture and the incredible wildlife. While we were underway, the ship would just stop anytime humpback whales, orcas, bears, mountain goats, etc., were spotted, and we'd just sit in the water for long periods of time to observe these fantastic creatures. And, yes, we saw all of the above, plus seals, seal pups, eagles, porpoises, tufted puffins, and thousands of other seabirds. We spent hours in Glacier Bay and Tracy Arm getting close to glaciers, icebergs, and waterfalls while on the ship and in inflatable craft, and we walked through temperate rainforests, thick with beautiful trees and other vegetation, including many varieties of mosses and lichen. The crew on the boat was fantastic and our Road Scholar guide was excellent. It is a fantastic experience and the thrill of seeing the beautiful landscapes, small towns that the big cruise ships don't stop at, and the wildlife cannot be adequately described.

What an amazing experience! We saw whales breaching, glaciers calving, sea otters, puffens, mountain goats and the beauty of Alaska. This was the trip of a lifetime and the crew of the ship and the guides were outstanding. I highly recommend this trip to everyone that wants to be in awe of Alaska.

The road scholar website is a great tool. My only issue is not with the website but with the volume of catalogs or brochures sent..way to many mailings of the large trip catalogs.

Glaciers & fjords & waterfalls; whales & bears & mountain goats; eagles & puffins & kittiwakes; seals & sea lions & sea otters: all of that up close from the deck of a small boat with a great crew, good companions, and excellent food. If you need more, there's Tlingit culture, fine museums, and an exceptional train ride. You can even opt to kayak in front of a glacier. Don't miss this one!

This is a great program for those who want a wilderness travel experience without the physical demands of wilderness travel. The small ship, with its flexible itinerary, superb crew and comfortable accommodations, was perfect. I’ll never take a big-ship cruise now that I’ve experienced this small ship. We had knowledgeable and communicative group leaders, fantastic food (argh, Weight Watchers here I come!), amazing sights and sounds, a great bunch of fellow travellers.

I would do it again in a minute. The leaders, Mary and Jeff treated us like family in addition to being very knowledgeable about the Flora and Fauna of the area. The ship was very comfortable with five star restaurant food. The scenery was gorgeous even when it rained.

Alaska Inside Passage on a small ship was an exceptional way to view natures wonders up close from mountains, glaciers, icebergs, waterfalls, wild flowers, spruce trees, birds and animals. To learn more about the natives and their rich history on field trips and excellent lectures. To explore the towns and villages along the way talking with the locals and visiting museums. Not to mention excellent leadership, lectures, food and new friendships of people of wide variety of backgrounds and interests. B&S from Maine

Wonderful experience. Scenery, lots of glaciers, whales and whales, bears, mountain goats, birds, beautiful sunsets, great shipboard living and food. A small ship is the only way to go. Don't even think about taking a cruise ship in the inner passage.

Elizabeth

I highly recommend Road Scholar's Alaska, Inside Passages program. The whole experienced exceeded my expectations and was excellent in every way. I know the weather is outside the control of Road Scholar, but we had sunny weather for every day except for one rainy afternoon, and this allowed us to enjoy being on the ship all the more. A blessing on top of the blessings of the program itself!

Lorraine
(5)

This was an over-the-top experience which I will never forget! We saw the inner passage up close and had amazing, hands-on experiences! GO!! You will be glad you did!

Margaret

Can't thank our program leaders Jerri and Emily enough for all they did for us as well as Ryan and Lee our guides. All the staff I interacted with on the Baranoff Dream brought their own talents and contributed to a great vacation.

Paul
(5)

This trip was both incredible and captivating, from the start in a temperate rainforest to sailing past icy vistas and flowing waters, listening to the stories of the indigenous people of Southeast Alaska and how they figured out survival in the environment drawing from the rich resources at hand. The group leaders were extremely knowledgeable and educational, the onboard instructor provided great insights and the cultural leader was very fascinating to listen to the stories he relayed of his people. The boat provided comfortable beds rocking us to sleep with ample and well prepared meals to keep up our energy. The captain and his crew were extremely accommodating and the fellow travelers on the trip were a pleasure to meet and share conversation with. I would suggest that anyone who wants to see Alaska's Inside Passage Up Close embrace this as the way to experience the nature of Alaska rather than on a large cruise ship. Well done Road Scholar!

There was more hiking and kayaking available as an option than I expected. That was a good thing. Each activity was as long or short as you wanted.

Our trip was a dream fulfilled for me. Amazing weather allowed for great viewing of wildlife, forests, totems, villages, glaciers, "calving". Road Scholar leaders were knowledgeable, friendly, easy to be around. Baranof Dream staff and leaders were great and added so much value to the program.
