Voyage of Discovery: Marquesas and Easter Island
Centuries ago, Polynesians from the Marquesas Archipelago set sail and settled on Easter Island and Hawaii. Their descendants carved the mysterious Easter Island statues. Focus on these ancient cultures and their evolution to modern life. During a study cruise, meet local residents and learn about history, economy, agriculture, government, and art.
Extensive standing, walking (up to three miles per day) and climbing. Existing roads/sidewalks are generally unpaved. Ground transportation via four-wheel-drive vehicles over roads that may be bumpy. Participants must descend exterior stairs with railings to board 30-passenger whaleboats to get ashore. Number of nights in Papeete may vary based on freighter schedule, and Easter Island segment might be before or after the cruise depending on the schedule.
