Service Learning: Preserving President Lincoln’s National Heritage

Take a journey back in time as you assist in preserving President Lincoln’s heritage at National Historic Landmarks where Lincoln lived from 1831-1861. In the spring, spend a week constructing an actual privy in the neighborhood of the Lincoln Home National Historic Site in Springfield. As time allows, repair and paint wooden fences and complete light landscape work throughout the site. In the fall, serve as a volunteer “interpretive assistant” at Lincoln’s New Salem State Historic Site during the annual two-day Fall Festival, demonstrating 1830s daily life activities and winter preparations.
