Birding in Virginia’s Great Dismal Swamp

Discover the wonders of birding in the Great Dismal Swamp, a national wildlife refuge covering more than 111,000 acres of forested wetlands in eastern Virginia and North Carolina. Search for the more than 200 bird and 50 butterfly species found in the varied habitats of the refuge. Discover firsthand the complexities of migration during the spring songbird season as you count migratory species, take sunset walks and venture out on nocturnal “owl prowls.”
