From the Desert to the Sea

Travel from Tucson, in the heart of Arizona's Sonoran Desert, to the sea at the Gulf of California town of Puerto Penasco, Sonora, Mexico. Also known as "Rocky Point," this resort can be your laboratory on the sea as you study the interaction of desert, sea, nature, and human kind. Traveling through the Sonoran Desert, witness the great diversity of the area. At Organ Pipe Cactus Nat'l Monument learn about fragile desert plant life, adapted to the area's scarce rainfall. In Mexico, discover the culture of the area and the economic impact of the Sea of Cortez. Go behind the scenes at the Intercultural Center for the Study of Deserts and Oceans (CEDO), whose mission is to advance and share knowledge about the Upper Gulf of California and surrounding Sonoran Desert. Explore tide-pools, visit an aquarium and an oyster farm, and spend an afternoon at Old Port. Returning to Tucson, visit Mission San Xavier del Bac, a 200-year-old architectural masterpiece still in service as a local church.
