Pathways Through the Peaks: An Historical Journey
Join us on an exhilarating expedition through the mountain peaks and lakeside trails of western Alberta, as we retrace the pathways that first challenged early explorers over 150 years ago. Study the history of mountaineering in the Canadian Rockies, focusing on the transition from commercial exploration to recreational discovery. Examine the challenges and triumphs of some of Canada’s most famous explorers including David Thompson and Tom Wilson. Delve into the history of Canada’s fur trade at Rocky Mountain House. Interpretive hikes through David Thompson country and Lake Louise will highlight native Indian history and mountain climbing culture. In Banff, focus on the artistic side of our explorers with a guided walking tour of historic Banff, and study the life and art of Mary Schaffer. From the urban oasis of Calgary, north to historical David Thompson country and west to the mountain jewel of Lake Louise, experience the rhythms of nature and triumphs of human discovery.
This is an active program with walks of 2-3 miles per day on paved and dirt trails with minimal to moderate elevation gain. Ability levels of participants will determine trail difficulty and distances.
