Ancient Culture Revisited: Art and Archaeology in Arizona and Mexico

Witness the preserved towering adobe walls of the archaeological ruins of Paquime, a sophisticated prehistoric city of some 200 acres located in Casas Grandes, Chihuahua, Mexico and abandoned over 600 years ago. Lectures bring to life the history from when Paquime was an ancient trading center with ties to both Mesoamerican cultures and the early cultures of southwestern U.S. This archaeological dig site was sponsored by Dragoon, Arizona's Amerind Foundation. Participants will visit the Amerind Museum and view the extensive collection of Native American artifacts. Journey to the remote village of Mata Ortiz for a demonstration of the production of Paquime-style pottery; an art abandoned for 400 years. Famed potter, Juan Quezada, researched and educated the villagers in producing this style of pottery, which now serves as the primary industry of the village. While in Chihuahua, Mexico, meet and learn about the descendants of Mormon and Mennonite colonists.
