I enjoyed this program ( - I had always wanted to go to Machu Picchu ). Most of our group found it to be at 'the upper end' of the Level of Activity...

An adventure, not a vacation. Worth the effort. Road Scholar does a great job of explaining and shepherding the group. Two very different experiences relatively close together. All your needs taken care of!

This program far exceeded my expectations. The Galapagos Islands were incredible - up close and personal with dozens of strange exotic critters -saw a baby seal at birth!, SWAM with sea lions, turtles and sharks! took 1000's of photos. Machu Picchu was just as awesome as every photo you have ever seen - only YOU are right there. We had great weather and excellent guides - and it makes a difference.

Both the Quito/Galapágos and the Peru sections were excellent. The choice of instructors and the presentations were above expectations. Kudos to the ship chef (Yolita II), the food on the ship was great. Guides friendly and knowledgeable. Be aware of the small ship rocking hard in rough seas (mostly overnight travels).

We had a great time on all the portions of the trip. We were lucky with the cabin assignment. Had the feeling that some schedule in the last two days on Galapagos were slightly changed, maybe in deference to our group preferring scuba diving to walk inside the island. The comment about no security on Yolita II is clearly true, but we personalty did not have a bad experience.

Both the Yolita II and the Galapagos portion of the program were below reasonable expectations. Ship had no security and I had money stolen from our cabin. Peru was fantastic. It was a Tale of Two Trips. J

Road Scholar response:

Road Scholar takes your concerns seriously and we’re working with the Yollita II owners to get to the bottom of the security issue as well as the unpleasant odor in some cabins.

Do not take the Yollita 2 unless you want sewer gas odor in your stateroom for the duration of the trip! Other aspects of the trip were excellent

This was truly the "Best of the Galapagos and Machu Picchu"! I never expected such good food on a small ship. There was a great variety of food. The converted monastary in the Sacred Valley was a fantastic place to stay. For this program be prepared to go all day, every day. There is no slowing down.

This was a fantastic trip. I learned a great deal both about nature and the Galapagos as well as about the Inca. It's physically very active with many opportunities for snorkeling (including ongoing commentary by the guide as you snorkel), walking, hiking and climbing. The lectures are informative and well delivered. I would recommend this to anyone in good health (two people were post leg surgery, and they just stayed behind on the parts they couldn't manage.) Definitely one of the better trips I've been on.

This was a wonderful adventure and exceeded my expectations. I was wondering about how active it would be as I consider myself active for my age. I need not have worried, my limits were tested but in a good way. Every minute is used to advantage. What you see and learn, you will never forget!

This was our first Road Scholar program, but it will not be the last. I am sure most people who visit the Galapagos and Machu Picchu have a memorable experience. The sights are marvelous. The Road Scholar program made it even richer and indeed unforgettable. Our travel companions, none of whom we had ever met, greatly increased our overall enjoyment as well. Finally, I can not say enough about our wonderful guides. Overall it was great!

In the view of most travelers The Galapagos and Machu Picchu are two of the more memorable of destinations to visit in the world. The emphasis on education with their choice of informative local guides and lecturers adds adds to the rewards of the Road Scholar program. As boaters ourselves we appreciated the emphasis on safety during The Galapagos activities. Use of audio devices added to the learning experience visiting Machu Picchu and the Cusco attractions. Logistics were handled seamlessly throughout.

An exceptional trip. Two wonderful destinations in one trip, Galapagos and Machu Picchu. The Galapagos represent nature at its best; pristine beaches, clean clear water and great wild life. Peru, Machu Picchu and the Andes mountains offer unbelievable beauty. Each offered unique experiences I shall never forget.

What a great trip! The Galapagos were an incredible experience. Peru was so different, but equally interesting. Our guides were outstanding - in their personality, their passion, and their knowledge. It is not a physically easy trip, but all the effort is definitely worth it! Road Scholar does a great job of taking care of all the details.

My wife and I attended this program1/16 to 2/1. Both final destinations of the Galapagos and Machu Picchu were exceptional. The tour group guides were as good as it gets . The accommodations in Quito, Lima, Cusco, Agua Caliente and the Sacred Valley ranged from good to very good. The vessel Yolita 2 did not meet the level usually seen with Road Scholar. We have been on live aboard vessels in the Orient and Caribbean and were not expecting a "cruise ship'. However the cabins on the Yolita were subpar and severely moldy. Our cabin was changed due to lack of AC . Both rooms were moldy and other passengers had the same issue. The meals were of average to poor quality. The staff was first rate doing a good job keeping the the exterior of the ship and decks clean. Overall this was a good trip but I would not be able to recommend the Yolita 2 due to the mold and meals.

Can't stop thinking about my two recent programs: 12/17/14 - 01/02/15, the Galapagos aboard the unique TipTopIII yacht and it's exceptional crew with group leader, Fredy who left nothing to chance. Peru and Machu Picchu were excting, educational, and beautiful. Omar and Vladmir are proud and informed group leaders. The ride on the train to historic Machu Picchu was remarkable. Thank you, Road Scholar.

This was an amazing program! Two very different experiences and environments, with local guides who enhanced our understanding of the culture and the natural environment. The Peru section was more physically strenuous for our group and the Galapagos portion a little more relaxed. In Peru we were on the go all day, while in the Galapagos we had a morning activity and an afternoon activity but were on board the boat from about 11:30-3:00. We experienced a good bit of rocking during our nighttime travels, so motion sickness medication came in handy for some. This was my first Road Scholar trip and I would highly recommend it.

If you enjoy informative lectures on history, agriculture, geography, moderate physical activity and small group travels you will enjoy this trip . Being comfortable/ proficient with donning/doffing snorkelling equipment and swimming in deeper water would make it more enjoyable. Also if you have problems with motion sickness come prepared with appropriate medications.

This was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and I echo my fellow participants' praises below. Our group of 16 (don't go if there are more than this!) was handled expertly by all of our guides, and the land tour restaurants and hotels were very nice. The seven nights on the Tip Top III in the Galapagos was a highlight, with our guide Elizabeth providing us with views and information about all of the wildlife we were privileged to see. Close quarters on the boat, but take your positive attitude and you'll do fine. Regarding Montezuma's revenge, I started taking an OTC pro-biotic a week prior to the trip, and had zero ill effects (but I sure missed lettuce...). All in all, a most memorable trip. My first RS trip, but definitely not my last--worth every penny!

EVERY detail of this trip was taken care of, with nothing but top flight service and four star accommodations! They also seem to have found the very best in guides and lecturers in each location! This made a much anticipated visit to these two "bucket list" locations truly magical! Do not hesitate, as this is a trip of a lifetime!

be prepared, of our group of 16, many got travelers diarrhea whilst on the boat... very debilitating and frustrating as one cannot snorkel in a wet suit with frequent diarrhea, and it drains one's energy. so be prepared.

This trip to Ecuador, the Galapagos and Peru was a trip of a lifetime. It was very educational and action packed with trips depicting the local culture. Visiting the Galapagos was a full week lead by a very experienced guide. She made sure we were "up close and personal" with all of the animals and wildlife. Swimming with the Sea Lions was the best! Seeing Machu Picchu and the other Inca sites was breath-taking with the guides providing insight to the history and local culture. It was better than I imagined, they didn't leave out anything!

This posting is for 18484 Galapagos, Machu Picchu 2/7 - 2/23 2014. This trip was outstanding 1 week cruise in G'pos to see all the major islands, land and sea life. We swam with the iguanas, sharks, sea turtles, sea lions, rays and much more. G'pos is a very bizarre fascinating place. Went on the MV Legend - 300' boat with good amenities and comfort. The weather was delightful there. The 2 cities where more time was spent were Quito and Cusco - both interesting - 9 and 11000 feet respectively. The travel to and from Machu Picchu was of splendid Andean grandeur. This was supposedly the rainy warm season - the other season is dry cool - but we had virtually no rain and MP day was glorious sunshine and spectacular. Besides, in rainy season the jungle around MP is lush and the river raging. So, if you want to get rid of 17 days of North American winter like me, go Dec to March. The physical demands are significant because of altitude and activity each day that is basically sustained from early AM to late afternoon both in G'pos and mainland. The interpretive guides and lecturers were outstanding. This trip is suited for those used to sustained daily activity as part of their lifestyle. There is little down time unless so chosen. Well worth the money.
