Biking the Virginia Creeper Trail

Enjoy scenic treks down the "Creeper", a retired railway corridor of the Virginia-Carolina Railroad. Enjoy a lovely mountain bike ride as you explore the history of railroading in Southwest Virginia while traveling over trestles and around mountains.

Biking ranges from 14-35 miles. Mountain bikes will be provided and fitted to meet the needs of each participant. Almost all terrain is level or downhill (less than 3% grade). Participants will experience elevations of over 3000 feet.

Naturalist Study in the Blue Ridge Mountains

Experience educational hikes while visiting places that include northern hardwood forest type, southern Appalachian Cove hardwoods, a high mountain bog, and an area preserve with twelve rare plants and sites of geological and ecological interest.

Walking portion is in increments of a mile or less, over non-paved terrain (mostly farmland and wooded trails). There are optional hiking activities.

Program in association with the Southwest Virginia 4-H Educational Center.

Abingdon

Founded in 1778, this historic community in the Blue Ridge highlands has long been a center of culture and natural beauty, attracting visitors to its Depression-era Barter Theater and nearby recreational trails in the woodland hills.
