Journey through French Polynesia via inter-island freighter, meet local Polynesians and learn about their history, economy, agriculture, government and art against the backdrop of spectacular natural beauty.
Program Particulars
Extensive standing and walking up to two miles a day and climbing. Existing
roads/sidewalks are generally unpaved terrain. Ground transportation via 4x4 vehicles over roads that may be bumpy. Participants must descend exterior stairs with railings from freighter to board 30-passenger whaleboats to get ashore.

Days 1-3:
Flight from the U.S.A. / arrival Papeete (Tahiti) / embark Aranui 3:
Excursions to local markets introduce the culture and handicrafts of French Polynesia. Learn about oceanography and more at the Museum of Tahiti.
Lodging: Beachside hotel.
Day 4:
Fakarava:
Snorkel and explore the beaches of the second-largest atoll in the Tuamotu Archipelago.
Day 5:
At Sea:
Expert lectures onboard discuss French Polynesia.
Day 6:
Ua Pou:
Experience the music, dance and cuisine of the Marquesas Archipelago.
Day 7:
Nuku Hiva:
A 4x4 excursion introduces archaeological and sacred sites.
Day 8:
Hiva Oa:
Visit Paul Gauguin’s grave and the Gauguin Museum.
Days 9-10:
Fatu Hiva/Hiva Oa:
Watch Marquesan artisans create the island’s unique handicrafts, view sacred tikis and native plants.
Day 11:
Tahuata:
In the village of Hapatoni, explore archaeological vestiges or hike to a scenic vantage.
Day 12:
Ua Huka:
Museum visits, performances and demonstrations present art and natural history.
Day 13:
Taiohae/Hakahua:
Visit a small museum of Marquesan artifacts.
Day 14:
At Sea:
A class presents an overview of freighter cargo distribution.
Day 15:
Rangiroa:
Anchor in a stunning lagoon to snorkel and explore the beach.
Days 16-17:
Papeete / disembark /departure:
Venture outside the city to see local villages and Maraa Grotto, a beautiful garden and cave area.
The Aranui 3
Commissioned in March 2003, this French freighter and inter-island freighting ship has eight decks. At 356 feet long, it can carry up to 200 passengers. Public areas linked by stairs include restaurant, fitness room, library, lounge, sun deck and pool.
