Operetta has charmed audiences the world over for more than 150 years. Explore this melodic era from Offenbach's scintillating French soufflés to Strauss’s swirling Viennese waltzes and the clever English comic operas of Gilbert and Sullivan. We also celebrate the vibrant American operetta -- from its roots in Sousa and Herbert to its early 20th century masters, Romberg and Friml -- and see operetta’s influence on popular culture in the films of Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy and the musicals of Rodgers, Bernstein, and Sondheim. Sing-alongs and enactments bring the humor, poetry, music, and genius of operetta to life. This enchanting week culminates in a concert of operetta favorites presented by professional performers.
West Dover
